Having a good size bowl at the top of the pipe will help slow the flow a bit there, reducing chance of erosion. A river slows where it widens.

Your videos are very educational and entertaining.
Using the boom swing function you can dig square without tracking. Its a pain when the swing is on foot pedal but you get used to it after a few buckets. Bobcats are nice because the boom swing is on the left thumb and you actually find yourself using it all the time when you have it. Nice job tightening up the grades before putting down gravel

Don't know if you have time to answer questions on your older videos but, is there a guide or good way to determine what size pipe you need? I know it will be based on the max flow at any given time but, is there a basic way to kind of guesstimate? Thanks

Seems with water coming down the hillside it would erode the vertical bank you cut at the pipes entrance end. DId you consider filling the entrance hole with larger gravels or riprap to keep the hillside from eroding off into the pipe? Or have you tried something like that in the past with negative results?
I was back at this job a couple days ago to look at doing some more work. Hadn't eroded at all but that could change at any time. Adding rip rap is never a bad idea
I live in the mountains of North Carolina. I have a steep driveway, gravel driveway. This wouldn’t do anything, wouldn’t I need to run the pipe vertical on each side of the road, the pipe with the little holes in it so all the water can drain
It’s hard to say without seeing all the surrounding land
@@DigginLife21 you’re right, the more time I spend messing with this land and looking at it every day the more I’m starting to see how the water flows and I’m developing an idea of what I need to do. Moved here from Florida where everything is flat and simple. But I’m learning! Thank you. 🙏

Really enjoyed the video and great education. I'm new to the excavator (just bought a vio50 @ auction). I'm curious what size bucket was that? It looks huge! Mine came with a 12"bucket but I just ordered a Tag 36"and a Tag hydraulic thumb for it.

Would you ever put sand or any material under the pipe before you place the pipe in the ditch?
Only if there is bedrock that makes grading before placing pipe impossible

Great video. Want to become a professional ditch digger.
I need to solve a similar problem, there are already a trench dug. Now I need to find material to put over the culvert. I am thinking that rocks and sand are bad options because water may go through the rocks or sand without passing the culvert. But I don't want to use soil (high clay content) either. I guess I must find out some other material to put upon the culvert.
Crusher run, ABC, Crush and run works really well as an alternative to soil.

Glad I went searchin thru your older videos. I’m doing almost this exact same job. Except I am doing it on a paved road so I have to cut out the pavement and I am using my little Sub compact TLB. Oh and this is my first culvert job. **On a related note, what do you consider the proper amount of time from the time you go look at a job until you submit your estimate to the potential customer?

How do you size your pipe? I think my state requires 15" minimum.
Great question Mike!!! It varies but yes…15 inch is standard if it doesn’t have constant water flow

What is the rule of thumb for determining pipe diameter?
It can be a tough one to figure. A standard culvert pipe for our area is 15 inch. But when figuring for a creek or erosion situation I will measure the depth of a creek and multiply that by 3. That will be the inside diameter of the pipe I choose. (Most of the time). You can also measure from the top edge of the erosion line (where water comes up to during a typical rain) multiply that by three. That too will generally work.
What we do at work is normally use 15 for driveways and 18 for cross road pipes

Why don't you put the dirt on the other side of the road and then pull the dirt back on the pipe instead of putting it behind you
