  • @Saskaruto16
    @Saskaruto16 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    It goes to show that because of the depth of mechanics, a lot of the lower tiers in Melee aren't far away from being good. A lot of the mid tiers like Link would really only need a couple buffs to be viable.

    • @Frudgey
      @Frudgey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd agree with that assessment! I think a lot of it comes down to mechanics, but yeah a couple of tweaks here and there I think could really make a couple of characters viable.
      Thank you as always for watching, SmashTurtle!

    • @TheKornstalker
      @TheKornstalker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hot take I think Link is totally viable, he just needs that godlike player to put all the different Link styles together to create one big monstrosity of mixups, traps, and zoning. For the record I'm a Link main so I might be a little biased (I'm also not that good at the game, but I do be makin hoes mad on netplay right n left)

    • @Saskaruto16
      @Saskaruto16 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheKornstalker I do not agree with you.
      While I agree that their are multiple styles in which to play Link and that no one has shown 100% mastery of all styles, I think in Melee that's fairly irrelevant.
      Link is held back by several fundamental flaws:
      Horrible grounded base movement options (Dash/Dash dance/Run/Wavedash)
      Bad jumpsquat (6f)
      Terrible grab (slow which makes it bad OOS and for whiff punish and can't grab airborn opponents which means SHFFL spam is even stronger against him)
      Slow frame data
      Weaker combos/confirms
      --
      Now a character can have one of those flaws and still be quite strong. In fact some characters need those kind of flaws to keep them from being busted (Imagine if Falco was faster with a better jumpsquat. God character.)
      But Link has too many flaws in his base kit, and none of the crazy Link tech, as cool as it might be, fixes any of those core issues.
      Against strong players who know the Link matchup, those flaws are not something that can be played around enough.
      You look at players like Aklo beat some other high level players yes, but his opponents don't have much experiance in the matchup given Links rarity, and Aklo is a top player (18th in the world currently) so yes of course even with his worse secondaries he can beat good players (Look at Zains, Roy, same thing).
      --
      Fundamentally Link just can't really get meaningful openings frequently enough against high level players to win against top/high tiers. He's just too slow and doesn't have good tools to deal with strong rushdown, and once he loses the lead he has no hope of breaking down a top/high tier character on the defensive without multiple high risk hard reads.
      Even in PM where he received dramatic buffs to many of the flaws listed here and much more, he still ends up on the lower half of the pack. That's because slower defensive zoners just don't do well in the Melee/PM engine, and Link is that archetype to a T.
      In Melee where he is substantially weaker, I don't think he has a hope of pushing into viability. You just can't play around his lack of speed and frame data enough to make him viable.
      --
      This isn't to say that you can't play him. Aklo still does and beats top 100 and even some top 50 players with Link.
      But you will hit a wall with him where you just need to be several levels better than your opponent to win with him because he just isn't a good character, and people with more experience in the matchup won't get hit by the tricks he needs to land to keep him playable.

    • @TheKornstalker
      @TheKornstalker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Saskaruto16 I agree with most of what you said, but I feel that a top level Link player on a good day could one day win a major. I agree he'll never be consistent at the top level, but I feel that if the stars align, Link has enough tools in any given situation that he could pull it off.

    • @Saskaruto16
      @Saskaruto16 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheKornstalker I don't think there is a single bracket you could put together with the strength to be considered a Major/Supermajor in which Link could ever have a hope of winning.
      Top 32, yeah doable. Top 8 at a major? With the perfect bracket, maybe, but still requires a ton of luck and upsets.
      But winning? You have to go through some combination of the best players in the world, many of whom play characters that annihilate Link.
      Spacies, Sheik, and Falcon, are all basically unwinnable for Link at top level. Puff, Marth, Yoshi, are Pika are still definitely losing for Link, even though they have to approach Link at first once they have a lead he can't do anything.
      I could see him being incredibly annoying for Peach, ICs, maybe Doc or Samus. But there is no world where he wins a tournament facing only matchups he has a hope in when it's a Major/Supermajor.
