Grace, I don’t think too much content is hurting the box office. Lack of content that people want to actually see is hurting the box office. If people want to see it, they will show up. Period.

I think it is hurting the individual films. I would have seen Spiderverse another time or two, if it stayed on IMAX. Favorite movie in a very long time. There are others who felt the same about Little Mermaid. A single week on IMAX is not enough, it seems. Blockbusters need to give each other a couple weeks of space, which didn't happen this month.

I think her point about the summer slate being too crowded is true, their were plenty of films I thought about seeing but because so many have been coming out back to back I missed out on a lot of them. If they had been more spread out I personally would have seen more of them.

I find it hilarious that Grace thinks that a diversity of filmgoers is built around the color of the cast of the film. We (Americans of African descent) go to all types of films that look genuinely good, regardless if it has a “black” lead or numerous other “characters of color”. Grace talks as if our people is simple minded and wouldn’t appreciate films with heavily “white” casts, which is something that we have been doing decades. The films coming out recently haven’t been worth going to the theater. Simple as that.

That is literally not what I understand or heard Grace to be saying. But I’m a black female NYC’r, a producer in the industry, prefers art house movies but can also enjoy mainstream movies sometimes.
I always hear her framing of “diversity” in relation to the business of movie box offices as whether or not a movie can expand on the appeal of the 4 quadrants, resulting in bigger successes.
Certainly not that we are of “simple” tastes. That would be a bizarre take on anything out of Grace’s mouth.

I think it's key that Jennifer Lawrence stepped away on purpose a few years ago. I would say she's had it all along, she just took a break. And I think taking a break actually helped because she was getting pretty overexposed in the 2010s and she knew it. Now she's back in people's good graces for the most part. And another key thing is that she's producing her own stuff now (like No Hard Feelings) so she can be more intentional with projects - and like you said Grace, she already has an Oscar so she can pretty much focus on what she wants. I'm glad she chose to finally do a movie that capitalizes on her comedic chops. Excited to see what she continues to cook up!

“Failure” is hyperbolic but you’ve got to put Into the Spiderverse’s box office into perspective
      Budget: 90 million
      Total box office: 384 million
      Split (w/theatres, distributors, etc): ~ 192 million
      Return on budget: +102 million
      Return on marketing: ???
      Other deductions (eg. participation): ???
A typical approach to estimating the marketing budget is to divide the production budget in half, so let’s estimate $45 million for Spiderverse - $57 million is a rough estimate of the studio margin which could still have been less with the likes of participation deals
If we run the same maths with the other animated films that released in 2018 with Into the Spiderverse:
      Incredibles 2: +271 million
      Hotel Transylvania 3: +136 million
      The Grinch: +150 million
Given how the competition was faring in 2018 and that Spiderman is itself a huge cinematic IP, Into the Spiderverse’s box office was arguably a disappointment for Sony at the time (its sequel is already ~ 130 million which is more what Sony would have envisioned for the original)

The demographic numbers have their place but I think that their usefulness is limited to "blockbuster" movies with budgets over $100mil. It is totally fine that a movie like Asteroid City or The Blackening does not have broad demographic appeal. They were targeted at certain audiences and they performed well with those audiences. While also having budgets that didn't require them to be 4 quadrant movies. With the ala carte nature of entertainment consumption today, I think we will be seeing a lot more targeted content with budgets in the $25-$50mil range. We might be seeing the end of the glut of mega budget blockbusters clogging up theatres because people only have so much time. I also totally agree that theatres need to add premium screens. Great video!

That limitation is what she's saying diminishes the profit they make. Sure they can make those targeted movies, they just won't make as much money and I'm sure the studio's want to make a lot more money. There's nothing useful about just making those for the sake of making an all white or an all black movie. It's a global market, if you want to make as much money as possible, which I'm sure they do, then there's no reason to limit casting.

I think that any movie that made enough money for the studio to green-light a sequel, "did well" by definition. So yes, the first Spider-Verse did well. It did well enough to warrant sequels. It's not like, for example, Alita, which didn't do well enough to get a sequel (which is too bad in Alita's case, because that movie really needs a sequel, it barely works as a stand-alone movie).

Speaking of animation, it's always amazed me, just how wide the disparity is between DC animated and DC live action in terms of quality. DC animated, amazing. DC live action unless its Batman is mostly terrible.

Wasn’t Passengers suppose to be Jennifer Lawrence’s Gravity. That didn’t end well.
I also notice Grace seemed pretty dismissive as The Little Mermaid hitting 500M when she was saying it was only going to make 400m about 2 weeks ago. Sigh, how fast we move on. 😊

I d9nt know about the box office but its a good movie. I enjoyed it, later watched with my parents and they also enjoyed it.
Its like last action hero, an awsome film, but sometimes critics just dont get it and contex can explain poor box office.

You're a real pro, Grace. As I always say, Movie Math is your best feature and possibly the best on youtube. You manage to be informative, analitical, funny and not exaustive but just long enough.

Absolutely, I agree! I love Grace's Movie Math. One of the most entertaining ways to catch up on the latest box office (and streaming) business news. Grace knows how to deliver it with the best of her exuberant and enthralling personality.

I saw Asteroid City theatrically (No Hard Feelings isn't in cinemas at all over here in tiny Denmark), but it didn't quite live up to my expectations. Very tiny plot, mainly populated by quirky characters for the sake of quirky characters.

I saw _Asteroid City_ today (Monday) and it was boring. I didn't hear much laughter from the audience I saw it with. It did remind me of the bomb from 1993: John Goodman's _Matinee._ I saw it in theaters and kind of liked it, so maybe 30 years is time enough to see it again? Too bad I don't have streaming this year.

It seems like having the exact same percentage of white and black audiences would mean your leaving a LOT of money on the table. Given the population percentage disparity.

Universal is playing with fire with this VOD strategy. I'm not sure how to take 1 billion over 3 years in revenue! Cause we have the final numbers for 2022. Streaming and VOD revenue from WakandaForever is 170mil, Thor4 is 160mil and DrStrange2 is 180mil; that's half a billion without Avatar2. We know early VOD makes money, Black Widow made 60mil just opening weekend + 80 domestic + 60 international. The VOD's 60mil, Disney keeps it all. This got Black Widow a +200million dollar opening weekend. But the damage longterm isn't worth it; it cheapens the brand, training people to wait for streaming, group viewing per 1 payment, HD pirated copies will be available online to everyone very early.......etc.
Disney is dealing with that in animation; Elemental's hold midweek and weekends, proves there's resilience and Disney should pull audiences back to theaters with a great film. Avatar makes a lot of money cause it's seen as an "event" in premiere screens. Universal is playing with fire.
