The mini mental seems relatively simple to administer. I appreciate how consistent Dr. Grande keeps his voice and tone while asking the questions. I know that is an area I will need to work on.
+Rachel Foster I also need to work on this area! When we are in class practicing, I have not been as consistent and deliberate in my administration of this assessment.
This video clearly demonstrated how to administer a mini-mental status exam. Although I had previous practice administering this in class, it was helpful to see Dr. Grande demonstrate the process and provide clear instruction.
This video was straightforward. His demeanor was calm, yet deliberate. This instrument is pretty cut and dry. We practiced administering a mini-mental status exam during class and it was one of the more simple and basic ones we have encountered so far.
pretty sure he made a mistake, when you give instructions (fold paper and place on the floor) i believe you are supposed to give all the instructions at once and get them to follow the sequence, not give the instructions in a stepwise manner.
2015 January 20 three reeds way 31 Reed way. Didnt hear city or county. Right handed. Apple penny table. No if and or buts. Close your eyes open them. Write a complete sentence. Spell world forward. World. Spell it backwards. Dlrow. That's what i remember
It is always helpful to see tests such as these administered. As new counsellors the more examples we can model after, the better! I appreciate the demonstration.
I think this is a great video to show how the way of being a counselor is when they are administering an assessment. I appreciated how Dr. Grande was a matter of fact, stayed neutral, and proposed the questions to the client in a way that was understandable, clear, and concise. I think it was good that he asked the client if it was okay to ask these questions and that he explained the directions to her and what he was testing for prior to beginning. After she completed certain test Dr. Grande thanked her. I think that was helpful in making the client feel at ease as they are being assessed and taking a test which they may be nervous about.
I agree that it was good he asked the client if it was ok to give the test. I think for new counselors it can be very easy to forget that we need to ask permission from the client and that just because they have signed a consent form for treatment doesn't mean they are ok with testing.
I was instructed to give this exam to a classmate without having the instructions present first. This video was helpful in understanding the proper way to ask questions along with the pauses in between questions. I think when I administered this exam my partner and I just read the questions and answered them without taking a pause or really thinking about what we were doing or its purpose.
+Candace Fernandez Yes, I don't remember if I took a pause or really thought about how to ask the questions. This is a good video to see how to properly administer this instrument.
I liked seeing how this test is administered. I liked how I was able to learn how to go over the instructions with the client, as well as, how to act when administering the exam so the answers are valid.
Even though we have done some of these assessments in class, I like to be able to see Dr. Grande conduct an exam. These videos always remind me that it is very important to have a steady consistent tone of voice when working with clients on assessments.
After watching this video, i realized just how much I messed up giving this in class without the instructions. I thought this was a great example of how this would work. It was much clearer to me now having seen it on video.
+Mandy Moore I agree, when my partner and I administered this test we did not thoroughly understand what we were doing or the meaning of the test other than the title. It was just rolling through questions without thinking much about it.
+Mandy Moore I agree, I did not realize how much we messed up when administering the test. This video taught me how to properly explain the instructions to the client.
I had this same test given to me while recovering in a care center after brain tumor surgery. It was given twice, some weeks apart. It was hard. I had at least 8 words to instantly memorize and then listen to a 4 long paragraph paper then repeat them back all in the right order again.
I have administered MMSE numerous times mainly on elderly clients. I have also used MMSE to better assess clients with AMS and/or present with increased confusion. Great video displaying how to administer this exam.
+Michelle Robinson How have you found people to respond to this instrument in the 'real world' at work, Michelle? I would be curious to see how someone scored on this that wasn't a graduate student!
This was a great demonstration on the Mini-Mental Status Exam. I really enjoy administrating this test since there are several different elements in the test that make the process quite enjoyable!
This video is a good example of speaking clearly with a client and giving full instructions. Also, as the counselor it is important to just keep moving forward without showing any emotion. As a counselor it is also important to be very familiar with the instructions so that the instructions flow effectively.
Thanks so much I am going to school for therapeutic rec class and I needed to watch this for my documentation class. Thanks for posting the video! Its great.
WRONG PART : suppose to give the instructions of "(1) take with right hand (2) fold in half (3) place on lap/table/floor" in ONE SINGLE COMMAND, instead of saying them separately as done in the video. The rest of the video is completely perfect, just that one place.
@Mr. XYZzz z it wasn't bad, but would not pass in our internship or fellowship programs. He needed to wait a little longer for the recall. This is probably the most important part of the test and the singular item with the most independent research. The three-stage command was the biggest breach. He performed what amounted to three one-stage commands, not a three-stage command. This item is supposed to be a measure of language (and secondarily working memory), but he eliminated these components by presenting her the paper and then talking her through the steps. Also, the name of the test is the Mini Mental State Examination, and it is copyrighted intellectual property.
I was given this test in class and its interesting to see it on the other side. I think that this test is very cut and dry but can explain a lot about the clients cognitive level.
Taking and administering this instrument to a classmate, this video role play seemed to be what we did without given the instructions to it first. This was a good video to reflect on when administering a MMSE.
This video compliments the class demonstration very well. It was nice to see Dr. Grande administer this test because, from in-class experience, it's more difficult than it looks.
nice video but regarding the 3 steps command i think the examiner should ask the patient to start only when finishes stating the 3 steps otherwise it is 1 step command repeated 3 times
This seems really easy to do, and it class it was rather simple. However, I imagine it becomes more difficult with a client who has some cognitive impairment. They might ask if they're doing it right or, for the 3 step command, perhaps need more instruction. That could pose a challenge for the administrator.
This seems more like the kind of test administered in Alzheimer's situations, as others have suggested - more working memory related. Also, just an aside, this environment seems so sterile that its hard not to notice the impact the environment has on the ambiance of the session.
The administration of this assessment was done in a clear and concise manner. The client did not have to ask the counselor for clarification or to repeat any of the instructions.
If the interviewee, answered, pretty slow, or answered it but was wrong and had taught about it again, and then answered quite correctly, is it considered to be correct? or already no points?
The Somers-Flanagan text states the the MSE is best administered to an individual exhibiting more severe pathology or dysfunctional cognition. Is this true, in that the MSE does not apply to those in mild situations?
was given this test and for the sentence I wrote I want to go home lol...and the examiner was using a computer I said what are you typing about me ...glad I'm better. lol
I am confused. Is this mental status or mostly working memory test? The mini-exam started off with a series of questions on time (dates, months, etc). Then the address of the building. Then questions on remembering objects and word order. What is the purpose of this exam?
I will be having a neuro~ psychiatric exam next week for NBI agent (equivalent to FBI in USA) position employment here in our country- Philippines, can you give me some advices? I am a bit nervous as the exam would take 4 days according to the clinic. Thanks!!

Oh yeah. Draw what he drew and fold the paper thing. I wasnt paying attention to that part
Michael Robinson yes, you are correct

It is nice to see an example of somebody else administering an exam. It helps me understand better ways of doing things.
It was nice that Dr. Grande had us perform this mini-mental status exam in class but it is nice to see how it is supposed to be administered.
After watching this video, i realized just how much I messed up giving this in class without the instructions. I thought this was a great example of how this would work. It was much clearer to me now having seen it on video.

Very good, Toniette, are you still enjoying the process now, 5 years later?
This video is a good example of speaking clearly with a client and giving full instructions. Also, as the counselor it is important to just keep moving forward without showing any emotion. As a counselor it is also important to be very familiar with the instructions so that the instructions flow effectively.
You definitely need to speak clearly and be familiar with the test
+Bethany Elstrom I agree. It's important not to react or show emotion so that we don't influence the client. This was a great demonstration of that.
Thanks so much I am going to school for therapeutic rec class and I needed to watch this for my documentation class. Thanks for posting the video! Its great.
After doing this role play with Dr. Grande it's great to see another example. Definitely could see where this would be beneficial.

And he should not say ' I am going to ask you again 2 minutes later'' this was anaother wrong part'...
This demonstration was very well done, for me this would take a lot of practice, but it was so helpful to be able to see it here.
This was not administered correctly, actually.
@@robertspencer3694 how it isn't correctly administered?

Well done assessment. Dr. Grande was very consistent.
Good video on administering the MMSE. Practice makes perfect but it was helpful watching a demonstration.
This video compliments the class demonstration very well. It was nice to see Dr. Grande administer this test because, from in-class experience, it's more difficult than it looks.
Thank you. Very informative. Watching from South Africa.
You're welcome!

How sensitive and specific is the MMSE score? What is the cutoff score? What is the followup exam for below cutoff score?
cut off score is 24.
This seems more like the kind of test administered in Alzheimer's situations, as others have suggested - more working memory related. Also, just an aside, this environment seems so sterile that its hard not to notice the impact the environment has on the ambiance of the session.
These tests are sterile in and of themselves, aren't they? I do appreciate the need to control for any bias, however.
The administration of this assessment was done in a clear and concise manner. The client did not have to ask the counselor for clarification or to repeat any of the instructions.
I'm not sure what all the sections of the mini mental test, however it seems to be thorough.
If the interviewee, answered, pretty slow, or answered it but was wrong and had taught about it again, and then answered quite correctly, is it considered to be correct? or already no points?
Sir, thank you so much.
session executed with precision and skill. Great job Doc.
The Somers-Flanagan text states the the MSE is best administered to an individual exhibiting more severe pathology or dysfunctional cognition. Is this true, in that the MSE does not apply to those in mild situations?
Thank you fo ryour education.
A normal score is 26-30/30. When do we do the executive function screen after an MMSE?Is it always needed even if the MMSE is perfect after a TBI?
was given this test and for the sentence I wrote I want to go home lol...and the examiner was using a computer I said what are you typing about me ...glad I'm better. lol
dolores lopez about 80% of my patients wrote the same sentence. 😉😂

+WLK F. The Mini-Mental Status Examination is an assessment of cognitive impairment.
Why is he so serious😂
He does not want to influence the client to answer differently.
I was laughing all through out the video
talking slowly makes it serious right?
exactly what I'm thinking
what question have you asked to test her insight?
mine was lil more in depth. was able to learn a few things
The three step command of paper holding, folding and placement. shouldnt it be given all at once?
