  • (This audio interview with Woody has never been published before.)
Oscar winner Woody Allen, writer, director, actor and occasional clarinet player. Movie fans either love him or hate him. It mostly depends on your taste in humour.
But whatever your thoughts about him, he has written and directed a diverse array of award winning films.
Woody’s been nominated 19 times for Oscars, winning four, in a career spanning more than 5 decades.
I had tried for three years to get an interview with Woody on my way back to Australia from the Cannes Film Festival.
Then, In 1986, asleep in a Florida hotel on a Saturday afternoon, prepping for an all night shoot on a John Malkovich film, I was woken by his PR from New York, calling to confirm he’d see me, for a half an hour, on Monday. And could I make it?
I turned up at his Manhattan edit-suite and was reminded he was very busy and I definitely only had 30 minutes. We ended up chatting.. for almost an hour.
Woody had just finished Hannah and Her Sisters and , by that stage in his career, already had a string of iconic hit movies on his credits-list, including Annie Hall, Manhattan, Stardust Memories, Interiors and The Purple Rose of Cairo.
In those days, there was no instant “googling the internet” for up-to-date information for the interview…so, I decided to start at the beginning, and find out how gag-writing, for a local newspaper, got him into the movies… :
In recent decades, of course, Woody has been the subject of a number of acrimonious allegations involving his former partner and children. I would just like to point out, before anyone attacks me over this interview…These are only allegations.
They have never been proven. Woody has never been charged with anything and he deserves the presumption of innocence. Unless you have undeniable proof then I suggest you keep your thoughts on the matter to yourself.
On the other hand, you’re free to criticise his writing, acting, directing and movies as much as you like.

Hi Ryan, Thanks for the comments. Yes, I did the interview with Woody in his edit suite in Manhattan "way back" in the 80's but only in recent years got around to posting this and a number of other interviews (now 80) on TH-cam. Cheers, John.

      Thank you!
Your work is professional and natural and intelligent. Thank you for posting it and enriching us with your insights into interesting people.
Would you ever combine footage or audio from several interviews to make a documentary or podcast series that has a unifying theme derived from your works?
Would you make a documentary about your career using your interview segments as examples of your progress as a intermediary between the stars and the public?
I have made a couple documentaries in my day, and I have LOTS of footage I hope to boil down into more digestible chunks when I have the time. The work is work, and when I do it, it is good to get it done FINALLY!

He could get away with his pretentious comments back in 1986, when his work was stellar. His last twenty films have been worse than most of the big-hollywood era films he criticizes.
