They had no benchmarks for this tune, no one's expectations to meet. The band took the tune, made it their own and handed us champagne! John Cowan's and Michael McDonald's voices do it justice! And Patrick's and John's guitar 'conversation' towards the end was just brilliant! What a thrill it must have been to be part of the audience!
@@KathleenEReedIn the section right after Pat Simmons finished singing his verse, Marc mirrored Pat's raw/distorted sound; this musical couplet really added to this live cover. That kind of spontaneous interplay is a joy to behold.
@@KathleenEReed Just saw this, but yes of course...please share, hope that you already did! The whole point of why I post is for others to see and enjoy! Share away!
My wife and I first heard Michael McDonald's voice on this song (here at 3:00) on Sunday April 21, 1974, when Steely Dan headlined at the U. of Toledo. He was so good on that tour that Becker & Fagen made him the featured backing vocalist on their next album, 1975's "Katy Lied." Then, when Steely Dan refused to tour behind that album, he was available to fill in for an ailing Tom Johnston with The Doobie Brothers. We saw them in April 1977 at Bowling Green State U. Steely Dan was the opening act for The Doobies on several 1973 tour dates.
Love this!! Pretty damn good for a bunch of old guys haha :) Michael McDonald joined SD after Pretzel Logic but I am guessing he must have played this a few times with the band.
Love John Cowan! I saw the Doobies in 2018 or 19 - they were touring with Steely Dan. We were in our seats right away - about the 5th row or so right in front of John - most of the people hadn't made it to their seats - John noticed my wife and I getting into the music right away and basically played directly to us, smiling and playing that bass. It's like we were showing each other appreciation.
Great story, thank you for sharing. As you can tell I was right in front of John as well. He blew me away with his vocals filling in for Tommy. It was an unexpected treat for sure!
@@gostosao1971 Just ran across our exchange from a few months ago regarding the Doobies. I am going to see them again this August at Pine Knob in Michigan! Both Tommy and Michael McDonald will be there! And the opening act is Steve Winwood!!!! I have tickets in the third row - again right in front of John Cowan. Can't wait.
Oh, this was so much fun to see! I saw the Doobies last summer, with both Tom Johnston and Michael MacDonald (amazing show at Jones Beach, the sound quality was fabulous!), and then saw Steely Dan there a week later. Lifelong fan of both bands, with all their interconnections, so it was a dream seeing them back to back. I guess there's just some songs that can't be performed without Tom, which (despite the Doobie's large catalog) made space for this cover. I wish him a speedy recovery.
Omgosh Such a great addition...And TC from Tennessee and 💗 PS....excellent. MM💗Marks of The Great Doobies!!!Rockin..50+ great YEARS!! SO EXCITED...THANKS!!🤘Speedy recovery TJ. 👍💗 THIS IS A BANNER PERFORMANCE...👍
I'm a huge Steely Dan fan. I heard the Doobies play this at the Credit One Stadium in Daniel Island. It blew be away! I think the fans definitely appreciated it. How could they not?
I miss Tom for sure. I enjoy John Cowan's vocals & funky bass playing! It's a blast to see Marc on stage with Doobies since Gregg died plus it's always good to see him perform @surviving Brothers reunions too! & good to see Michael reunited with Doobies too. Did he play on the original Steely Dan version of this?
Michael didn't play on the original, but joined the band on the '74 tour that followed. Def worth finding the recordings here He sings the same bridge part he does here as well as the lead on Show Biz Kids and his unmistakable high notes throughout. He was one of the Dan's secret weapons.
Too bad that the other original Steely Dan member to go to the Doobies, and the original guitarist on this song, Jeff 'skunk' Baxter, was no longer a Doobie when they did this song.
@johnr1294 Hey, glad you like it. We're all different. I listened to it again. The acoustics and recording doesn't help, the bass is a blur and sounds off the beat, Michael just sounds old, Simmons and McFee finally put some fire to it but way too late. This song should be a strong shuffle not a plod. Search for 'pretzel logic southland 1974' for a version with some punch. The Southland audio is great. There are a number of songs to check out from that concert, Rikki is amazing. If you're a Dan fan you're gonna love it.
Damn awesome cover! Kudos Doobie Brothers! Steely Dan would be proud! 😎
It's so difficult to cover Steely Dan and do it justice, but this is freaking awesome!
They never disappoint. ❤
Fifty years on and still making beautiful music together. Bravo gentlemen!
My favorite Steely Dan song. Well covered here.
My favorite STEELY DAN album

I was remiss in not mentioning Marc Russo's saxophone in all its trilling, baffling, growling excellence. It gave me chills.
I hope you will allow me to share this! Please.

This was their final encore number when I saw them in Winnipeg last month.Killer
Great Cover!! Takes guts to cover Steely Dan...

While Toms out rehabbing from surgery it has obviously opened up some space for some other gems like this one.
You are so right, while I did miss Tom I also loved hearing Pat take the lead on "China Grove" and others! Amazing show! Thanks for commenting!
"Toms"? Plural? Oh, "Tom's."

Love it❤❤
Awesome. The incomparable Doobies are ageless. There is not a genre of music they can’t play with world class excellence.
Love both bands!
Saw them in Oshawa. They closed the show with this song and it was the greatest.

Hot pretzels 50¢. Those were the days.
It was "HOT PRETZLES 15¢" (sic)
Great job John Cowan❤️

Wow!
Fantastic! Now I’d love to hear SD cover “what a fool believes”!
Don't miss the BD of The Dukes Of September. Dan/Doobie crossovers plus my Isley fave Who's That Lady.
Michael is beast of singer
Saw them a few weeks ago. 2nd row. Amazing!
There's another missing connection here. Where's Skunk?
A hint of "Free Bird" thrown in for good measure.
Excellent
All I can say is "wow!"
I just hope there were a lot of fans there who appreciated this cover even if they didn't know it was a Steely Dan tune.
I sure do! Just discovered this. Wow. Speechless. Thank you for posting this.

OMG!!!
The best evening of music I've experienced in a long, long time...

When MM joined the DB, it sort of initiated a new and different era for the band. Seems to have worked out well.

Hey man that's all right
Marc Russo has the most unique altissimo sound.

Is that Rick Latham on drums?
🥨🥨🥨🎉
Is tom Johnson no longer a part of the Doobie Brothers?
He is, he was recuperating from surgery. I think he plans on rejoining them in 2024
Thank you@@gostosao1971
Sucks Tom aint there. This is the second time he was a no show for me!
Wheres Tom . Needs to be be Tom & Pat to be the D,B
SkyLark was the best player ever in the Doobies.
Nice, but nobody sings cynicism better than Donald Fagan. (Well, maybe Dylan...)
Fan of both bands, but this just plods along. The feel is just not there.
Its a groove you need to feel.
