    Man I'm so jealous of you guys who still get those 650s. Here in the UK that whole segment was long-since killed off by emissions and so on, and as a result the few we have left floating around the second hand market regularly go for stupid money. It's a real shame because something like that would suit a lot of our single-track roads and lanes really well, and small, simple, affordable bikes (i.e. Royal Enfield Meteor and 411 Himalayan) have been selling really well in the last few years.

    Did a 300 mile trip all highway going 80 on my fully built dr650. During that time i was crying for wind protection. But when the trip was nearing its end i forgot all about it like i built resistance to it. Tried different windscreens and hated how it buffeted my helmet id rather take all the wind on my chest than having it use my head as a speed punching bag. At some point I have to get back up to where you're at the trails are great! I'm a few hours south of youon the border ride safe bro🤙

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      NICE! Yeah, I'm interested to see how I feel about it when we do the full round trip, up there on the road. All clean air, on the right day, definitely can be nice! The turbulence hitting me in the face can be annoying when I want my helmet shield open on hot days. But I think I'll be happy to have the upper body protection when it cools off. I think it'll look goofy, but the nice thing about this set up, is that I could pretty easily pull the shield off. Or, I could even unhook the carplay unit, at the connection hidden behind the screen, and pull the entire thing off pretty easily! Not sure I ever will, but I like the option!

    • @WyDave
      @WyDave 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ditto on wind screens. I've tried Parabellum and Madstad, and both didn't work. Buffeted my head terrible. I use the Madstad on its lowest level - that stops bugs from hitting my neck and deflecting them under my helmet/chin.

    That's the nicest looking set up I seen so far.....similar to what I will build...but a small dash and then a 14mm round bar on top...with an adjustable wind shield....almost like the ones on Temu....great video. Garth

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Garth!!! I really like it too! The adjustable windshield seems like the way to go though! Moving mine up, or even down just a tad, would help get that little bit of turbulent air out of my helmet. It's almost not noticeable with the helmet shield down, but it's not the best when I want to run it open and get some air. Take care man!!!

    Great inginuity man. But... when you crash, that is a LOT of leverage and torque points on the bars to give way at varying degrees of twisting and turning. My wife has my old bar risers like yours and when she went down on a gravel road everything got knocked out of whack. Let me tell you it was a pain in the arse to get it close to straight out on the road. Not to mention wishing I had NOT trail tools to do it. I went with an ADV PRO High rise bar to get ride of all the extra stuff to raise it. Just an FYI bud. Keep producing those vids man.
    Side note, make little marks on everything while it's exactly where you like it. That way, off-road you know where it was before a crash twisting it. Easier to set on the trail.
    Also, look into the Anti-Gravity lithium batts. They have a key safety feature called the Restart button. It basically cuts off the batt if the charge drops to low, saving your expensive lithium batt. It's in everyone of my bikes and it has saved my arse a number of times.
    That crap rubber cush drive is killing your torque at throttle snap. Poly ftw man.

    Great video and mods as always. You may want to try lowering the pegs on the DR, I have not yet done that on mine and I would like you opinion on that mod. I want to see what your dad thinks about going with the 14 tooth sprocket. That was one of the 1st things I did to mine, after a Seat Concepts seat and better tires. I look forward to your videos, love the DR vs XR comparison.

      @SwankyCatProductions  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, thank you!!! Yeah I'm pretty excited to see what my dad thinks too. Especially when we take them both out on the road and trails. I'm surprised the rubber isolated pegs don't bother me more. The ones on the KLR drove me nuts, but I think that was partly because the pegs themselves have rubber on the top, whereas the DR pegs actually grab your boots a bit. My guess is I'll like them if I switch them out, but I'm trying to see how long I can go without 🤣.

    I like how you adapted and made everything work for the windshield but later I would have sent it back to get the correct brackets. It’s good content showing that if you get creative you can make things work. Good video. I just don’t like all of those nuts, bolts, shims, and clutter. More things to loosen up at the worst time.

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you!!! I did message the sellers about the brackets not fitting, but my guess is they don't actually have a fat bar version. My guess is they have one kit that they tried on a few bikes and then just assumed it would fit any dual sport (not knowing that some have larger diameter bars). Hard to say for sure though. I definitely agree about the fasteners... The longer bolts are also a small amount of concern, just because they give the ground a little extra mechanical advantage. As Jim Carrey said in The Grinch, "That's what these tests are for!".

    • @Nine_883
      @Nine_883 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SwankyCatProductions absolutely. So many of these kits do not fit like they say. It’s so common that you would think it would put people out of business, but I guess not when everybody else is just as sketchy. I buy eBay stuff because I am cheap. It’s usually close enough. Might have to wallo out a few holes to make stuff fit, but that’s why it’s cheap. Put a little of your own work in and you got a quality product.

    @swankyCatProductions
    Great install vid, bike looks nice!
    One suggestion about your lithium battery, which you may be seriously burned by, if you don't heed the warning:
    Lithium batteries in general easily hold capacity below 0F and most will still hold charge and provide power down to -40F/-40C
    Here is the problem you will inevitably face (since you are in Wisconsin), lithium severely degrades while being charged in freezing temps (when the cells are at or below 32F/0C)! And that damage is deep and irreversible.
    So, the more you will ride your bike with a cold battery in freezing temps the more your battery capacity will diminish. This degradation goes very fast, meaning if you ride it all winter, it may not last more than 1 season before there is not enough capacity left for it to crank the 650. Conversely, degradation of lithium goes fast in temps above 120F (both charging and discharging).
    Again, giving out power in freezing temps is no factor. The problem is charging them back up in freezing temps, which is what totals these batteries until FUBAR.
    Just my 2c.

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks man! Hmm interesting 🤔. You mean "burned", as in I'll need to buy a new battery? Or as in literally 🔥 burned?
      I will certainly ride when it's below freezing, but usually try to pick slightly nicer days when it's between 30 and 40 degrees. So my guess is I should be ok, but I guess we'll see! Unless it's actually a fire hazard, then I'll probably pull them out for winter.

    • @pleiadianfrequencies
      @pleiadianfrequencies 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SwankyCatProductions No fire. "Burned" meaning it will keep degrading in its ability to hold capacity. I once foolishly left my phone outside on the patio in winter in freezing temps hooked up to a portable solar panel to see how fast it would charge.
      My battery, in that single event lost 40% of its rated capacity after that, never recover again.
      So, you can use the lithium batteries in your bike all the time, but be weary when you start that bike up after an overnighter in freezing temps, it immediately starts killing that battery. Riding with hot engine in freezing temps may not be an issue as that hot air from the engine will inevitably warm up the battery compartment enough to go above 32F.
      There are lithium batteries whose BMS has a built-in low temp disconnect and kills the connection, if the sensor in the battery itself goes below 32F and automatically reconnects when the temp rises to safe levels. Not sure what that would do to a bike, if a battery kept disconnecting itself while riding, though.
      Anyhow, I thought I'd share this, because lithium, no matter how awesome it is, has its hard limits to be aware of. This applies to all lithim chemistries, lithium ion, poly, titanate, iron-oxide, etc...
      IN terms of catching flames, the LiFePO4 (iron oxide) are proven relatively safe and not as much as a risk as Li Ion or LiPoly where the thermal runaway situation is so violent and fast your bike would be in flames within mere seconds. Especially since Lithium battery fire does not need oxygen (it provides it by itself). Just look up some videos on "Lithium battery thermal runaway" or "lithium battery penetration test", to see what sits under your seat!
      Better be safe than sorry.

    • @pleiadianfrequencies
      @pleiadianfrequencies 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SwankyCatProductions Also, this is the #1 reason why car manufacturers do not put Li batteries into the combustion engine cars and still stick with Pb acid. They'd die within one season in northern states in harsh winters. You could install a battery heater, but that would beat the whole purpose, because after a few days of being parked outside in frost, the battery would deplete itself.
      Electric cars are a different story, because they have battery heaters and coolers to keep the banks at their optimal operating temperatures at all times. That's why when you leave a dead Tesla outside in frost for days and plug it in, it will take a good while before it starts charging again. First needs to heat up the batteries.

    Out of the DR, XR and 701 which one would be best for long range on the highway??

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Excellent question! The XR should be a little more comfy now that the back of the seat is at a slightly less steep angle. But it's probably the least comfortable for long rides. I'm not sure how the DR will do at HWY speeds now that it has the 14 tooth, but it's definitely comfortable enough for long rides. The 701 mirrors are annoying, but other than that, it's a pretty awesome bike to ride for longer stretches at high speeds. It's never actually given me a reason not to trust it, but the bad reputation KTM/Husky has for longevity would be in the back of my head I suppose.

    Great video! I love my DR and enjoy seeing what you are doing with yours. Silly question @SwankyCatProductions but what is the threadlock paste you are using? Looks way better than liquid or the stick I've been using.

      Loctite stick based thread locker like a paste in a tube about the size of a "C" size battery

      Thank you!!! Michael is correct. It's definitely kind of nice. Much harder to waste, but also kind of expensive per oz, VS liquid. Here's an affiliate link to the stuff I use. amzn.to/4dZlRBG

    U americans r so lucky.. U still get to ride these beasts.. Here in india we have everytype of mcs except dualsports... Honda launched a 2011 nxr 150l or impulse 150 which failed in indian market because of our people loved sports bike more than ds.. Or offroad mcs.. After that straight to himalayan 411 that gave indians offroad enthusiasm.. So other companies started making small advs.. I hav hero xpulse 200 .. Though Kawasaki do sell their kx and klx 450r .. They r super expensive.. Though u guys dont have klx 450r ...

    So i dont have a dual sport bike, yet. Ive got a rebel 1100. Most of my bikes have been without a windscreen, the rebel included. Is there any difference with the dr650? I think im used to going without.

    • @SwankyCatProductions
      @SwankyCatProductions  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can certainly get away without one. I add them to most of my bikes because I've gotten used to having one. The only time I really NEED one is when it gets cold. Then they can make a huge difference. I was just out today and swapped bikes with my dad, a Tenere 700 and a 250 dual sport with no windshield. Even with all my cold weather gear, I could feel the difference!

    I waited for you to say how you would add a cylinder, add 30 horsepower, shed 40+ pounds,add electronics like cruise control and large integrated LCD screen w android.. but I know that it's science fiction..

      I've now decided the dark color shield is a bit of a safety hazard and pulled it off until I can get a clear shield (if you didn't catch the new video on it).

    I just watched your latest video about the KTM 390 adventure...and an still upset about you turning off the comments ! you mentioned you were looking at a smaller bike.... and I couldn't agree more the XR650L is a big heavy bike on the single track bracket !
    but don't expect the KTM to be lighter than the XR650L or DR650 if it is it will only be by a few pounds.... and that is the problem...less power less suspension and cost more than the XR or DR.... I can't see that the KTM 390 adventure will sell very well at all. although they say 45hp I seriously doubt that I guess we'll have to wait and see..... but the color of what you showed is a major turn off. a graffiti covered bike is not good looking.... WTF were they thinking? if I were you I would look at the 250cc bikes they are the only ones light enough to be viable on single track in my opinion. a newer one should have 6 speeds so 70mph should be obtainable.... and I know your like me in that...if it can't do 70mph on the street it's practically useless ! I have come to the conclusion that the XR650L is the perfect bike for me.... it cruises at 70~75mph and is relitively light for a 650cc machine...
    I had bought a RX4 from CSC and quickly sold it because of the weight it was silly it was so heavy.... if reminded me of my Honda shadow 1100cc yet it was supposed to be an adventure bike !?!?! the 390's and 400's flat out weigh way too much ! the manufacturers have forgotten 2 things sense the 1970's weight is everything and so is seat height ! and if your not into crotch rockets so is riding position.
    take care Ben... ride safe !

      Hey Bob!!! Hmm, not sure why it wouldn't have let you comment? Must have been a glitch?
      The comments about looking for a lighter bike were strictly aimed at the KLRs and T7. I definitely consider the DR and XR to be lightweight adventure bikes. I also agree that the 390s are too heavy for the amount of power they make. BUT, I am happy to see manufacturers making bikes a little closer to what I've been wishing for. Honestly though, the DR and XR are feeling pretty darn close to what I feel like I want/need now that the builds are coming together.
      Oh, and in regards to the graffiti decals - my hope is that they just slapped some random wraps on this and the larger ADV they brought out to the Rally. My assumption is that they'll look a little closer to the old 390 and the other ADV-Rs, but who knows!
      Take care and ride safe man!!!

      The camera location on my helmet makes it look worse than it really was, but it was a lot taller than I expected. Had I known, I'd have ordered the clear one and is what I'd suggest. I just made a video on it actually.

    Bro, I really wanted to watch your entire video, but I just couldn't stand all the ScrewTube commercials. Man, I'm talking 5 & 6 at a time, in multiple breaks! The kicker is, it's B.S. that doesn't apply to ANYONE'S life! I don't know how the money works out, but you might wanna explore the possibilities on Rumble. Lots of creators going there.
    Sorry bro, gotta go. 🤷
