    Hey Dave, thanks for the set up vids and an essential dose of sarcasm. I've rescued a couple of basses from Fleabay since I found your channel and learned not to fear the truss rod. Mind you, as they're for me to play, the correct string height is always "as low as possible without any buzz", in open D. Its a rock thing.
    Keep 'em coming pal, and a happy new year (nearly) from the UK.

    That G string spacing on the saddle would drive me nuts, it's set on the far notch. I have the '15 model of this baby, love the easy access truss rod adjustment slot, versus having to take the neck off my old Jazz. Love playing both though. Keep the vids coming Dave, Merry Christmas!

    • @ian-c.01
      @ian-c.01 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was driving me nuts through the whole video, in fact all the strings seem to be a little off to one side as the spacing appears ok.
      I wonder if the previous owner had a particular playing style that required that unusual setup ?

    • @TheMitchbassman
      @TheMitchbassman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ian-c.01 Yes he did, have a playing style that required that. One arm was longer than the other.

    I have an American Standard Precision Bass with flat wound Rotosound 77's on string through and it's just fine. I also have an American Standard Jazz Bass with D'addario Chrome Flatwounds on string through and they have never had an issue. I know on the package for LaBella Flatwounds it says not to go string through but there are no warnings on the packages for Rotosound 77's or D'addario Chromes. They both sound incredible and I've had the strings on both instruments for over a year and they still sound great. I think the the big thing is to just check for a warning on the package. They were selling those Precision Basses like the one in the video for $899 at one time. I wish I'd had the money to get one when they were like that.................

    4/64 = 1/16. I use a 1/16 hex wrench for string height setup. Put the short end on the fret and softly pluck the string and crank it up or down until it buzzes a little. I trust my ears over my eyes.

  • @shepherd8203

    Do you think the string throw bridge is good. Am thinking of paying a new Am Ultra and it does not have it bit a height mass bridge or they have a Am pro that does have the string thought just like the one in the video.

    Dave,
    You mentioned the sponge foam under the pickups was good.
    I need to get some foam for a P pickup and also for a T-Bird humbucker pickup but I don't know where to get the sponge foam or what size width and depth is correct for the foam. I looked at weather strip foam a Home Depot but it does not feel like the right stuff.
    Thanks for any feedback you can give.
    Cheers!

    Dave, I don't seem to have fret buzz when I adjust my guitars, but my bass gets me every time. I'm guessing I need to level the frets??? The neck relief is bang on, string height etc. Thanks again for all the great vids, have a merry christmas.

    • @GregsGarage
      @GregsGarage 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Low E mainly and between the 4th and 10th I'm getting buzz. I'm a guitar player, so there's a HIGH likelihood it because I play bass like a shithouse rat. I rocker-ed the frets and there's a couple with minor issues on the bass end of the frets and surprise I'm getting the rock around the 11th fret.... I'll get them leveled up and give it a thorough check before I seek more wisdom.

  • @patrickford9615
    @patrickford9615 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dave, I've always had problems w fret buzz. I think it's just from playing hard. I usually set my guitars up with medium high action, say 4/64ths on the bass side. I like some english on the strings, I use heavy picks and heavy hands. I experience fret buzz mainly on the low e and a when fretted near the nut. I think I'm using pretty conventional neck relief and action, if not on the high side. If I fret real hard, i get enough clearance to stop the buzz usually, but thats not an option on one tele with vintage small frets. What can I do to adjust setup to my style? Happens on everything I play: acoustic, fender style, gibson style.

    Dear Dave, I own A Fender P Bass a ($100 pawn shop investment) and I don't even Know How to play a Bass but I want to learn even though I'm 63 years old with no musical experience. I have seen you repair a lot of Basses and a lot of your videos has helped me to get tuning "In The Ball Park". My question is about refinishing the body. Is it cool to use a paint stripper?

  • @benebluesman

    Here's a an odd question for you. Are the two coils of a pbass pickup always opposite magnetic polarities? I know with a guitar humbucker the two windings are electrically opposite and the signal is put in phase by having the magnetic polarity reversed. With the pbass split pick up one coil detects the E and A string and the other the D and G so they could be wired out of phase to cancel noise but where any string is only detected in one coil the shouldn't need the magnetic phase reversal. Even if the E and D string were struck exactly the same time the differing frequencies puts them out of sync within a few vibrations so the signal polarity seems irrelevant. I could be wrong. The point is I've made a two string cigar box bass and ordered a pbass pickup with the idea I could create a 2 string humbucker by lining the two coils up under the two strings (strings between pole pieces) moving the D,G coil under the E,A strings, but that would only work if the coils are magnetically opposite polarity otherwise I'd get a thin tone. (The difference between the two signals). So is it likely that I'll have to reverse the magnet on one coil or should it already be that way?

    what string action is too high? I have a 3mm pick, thats just under 8/64ths in america's units, and adjust action at 19th fret (out of the 24 on my BC) to that. anything lower than that just feels wrong and too low for me :/ is that considered bad and i should refine my playing style?
    that is also my measurement for 1st fret height when i did my nut

    Another timely installment of fun stuff. I have 2 x Fender USA jazz bass.. ( One x 4 string , One x 5 string ), that need to be maintained. What is the recommended relief for the 5 string, and what should be the string height of the 5th string ?. Where can I get all the set up spec for these Fender Bass guitars ? thanks for your help. cheers

      Cool ta.. good for the 4 string..
      I thought the 5th string on a 5 String Jazz Bass would have a slightly higher action, and possibly a 5 string bass would have a higher recommended relief. At least I can use those 4 string specs, and your set up vid. The 5 string needs a complete set up. All good. cheers

    • @tweedguitar9103
      @tweedguitar9103 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought ( with no real knowledge ) that the thicker string tuned down to a B, would oscillate more, That's why I thought it might have to be higher. But now you say it needs to be the same as a 4th string tuned to E, that is good news.

    • @tweedguitar9103
      @tweedguitar9103 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I am old school. I only got the 5 string because I had to play in a band with brass instruments, where the keys played were mainly flat keys, and the notes to be played included a low Eb , a low C, a low D. If I play rock bass I always use a 4 string. I hate detuning below concert tuning, I haven't got the brain for that.

    What bass players let their instruments get like this?? For the love of God - one of the first things I taught myself when I first started playing around 1984 was how to set my bass up. The first thing I always do when I take my basses out of the case is check the action and neck relief. 98.5% of the time it's OK but there are the times I have to make some minor adjustments. That being said I love your videos Dave - Especially the Rickenbacker bass one. I was dying with some of the things you were saying.

  • @pulse5217
    @pulse5217 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    If my string action at the body/17th fret area is like 3-5/32s of an inch, and the saddles are almost dumped, do I need to shim the neck or get a new nut? The relief is about .013, or a little less than a US penny thickness

    • @pulse5217
      @pulse5217 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just spent 15 minutes messing with the truss, got maybe 2.5 turns clockwise on it. The string height @the 17th is 3/32, but the gap at the 8th with the 1st and 17th fretted is like the thickness of a coin. Shim time?

    • @pulse5217
      @pulse5217 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No sir, they're adjusted to every string is about 3-4/32" at the 17th fret.

    Why are the bridges so far back on Fender Basses , is there an advantage ? Or is it nothing at all . I just like the bridge up more toward the neck

    • @subnormalwater8158
      @subnormalwater8158 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      so the neck can be shorter. It's simple

    • @lennyplummer8730
      @lennyplummer8730 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Dale I'm guessing for the p bass it's for a looser upper for more bass in the amp,ect

      talking about bridges, I would like to thank the guy who assembled my MIM JB who made wrong holes. The intonation is perfect, but the strings are not centered on the neck -_- fortunately I kinda adjusted it with a grooved badass II

    You would really hate my basses Dave, LOL. They are all out of adjustment, and until they give me grief, I will keep playing them like they are....Why?? Because James Jamerson's Bass AKA...."FUNK MACHINE" NEVER had a setup ever....and he got great tone, played some of the best bass lines, and the string height didn't affect his playing. Just my opinion....and I know what that's worth!!!!! LOL.....Cheers!!!!
