    I love this! Good information as I am looking for a backup bird to ducks for my future homestead, looking increasingly like quail will be my best option!

    I had a small farm with chickens also in the wilderness. Mine were just as loud as yours. I take it as a sign they are very happy chickens :) Great information, thank you!

    Thanks for all the Practical information I hadn't yet come across anybody that talked about quail poop smell. So that's very good to know. I've had some button quails in the past as pets I never had a problem with them, nor smell. But now I'm thinking about Coturnix quails for meat and eggs.

    I have chickens in the front yard in a subdivision and they aren't that loud. Sometimes I let them roam loose in the front yard. They stay home. Rooster isn't super annoying either.
    Fermenting Chicken feed helps with manure odor. So does a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in each gallon of water. Barn lime is a friend.

      I think a lot depends on breed - but also, luck of the draw. Some flocks are just more quiet than others.

    I select against the noisy birds so my neighbors don't find out about them. Just get rid of the loud ones and in one generation even the roosters don't crow.

    • @Proverbs31Homestead
      @Proverbs31Homestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, never heard of roos who don't crow (but still mate). For sure, selection makes a difference. We don't have nearby neighbors, so I select mostly for size and temperment.

    I absolutely love your chicken run. I was thinking I would like quail, but now I am rethinking that. We have a very high predator drive here. We don't eat meat so we would only be eating eggs.

    • @Proverbs31Homestead
      @Proverbs31Homestead  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We live on the edge of wilderness, so I know what you mean about predators. Personally, I think keeping chickens and quail safe from them is about the same...but the chickens need much more room, so predator-proofong is more expensive.

    I rescued a female quail. She is quiet. Much quieter than my cockatiel that loves to screeaaammmm! I cannot have another quail (with 4 dogs and a bird my hands are full), so I’ve turned mine into a pet quail. She does recognize me😃

    Making small cages and aviaries fulfills my artistic bent. I love watching the breeding and hatching. Deep bedding should eliminate most all the housekeeping of which you speak. I can easily carry their little 'tractor' out to the grass. We'll see which one wins.

    Quails are NOT LOUD . I live in a HOA that forbids ANY farm animal and I have hatched and raised jumbo C for 3 years now.
    Nobody knows I have them and having had chicken hens before befor moving to my new house, it’s a NIGHT AND DAY difference.

    Very helpful video, thanks! 💕 I've had chickens for a while, but will be incubating some quail eggs this spring. Yes, the eggs have a slightly more "buttery" flavor. I'm so sorry you can't eat eggs!! I was a sourdough baking fanatic until I developed a massive wheat & grain intolerance - ugh!

      Oh Jaimie, that is a bummer! We do not eat a lot of wheat products in general, but sourdough bread is a must over the winter months - I tend to not bake over the summer, too hot and plenty of fresh vegies. But there are substitute options.

    • @jaimielistens
      @jaimielistens 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kleineroteHex Yes, and unfortunately most grains give me trouble. Besides, there's no true substitute for real sourdough, right? 😁 Low sugar, dairy free dark chocolate is what I have for my substitute, so I haven't done too bad. 😂

    If you cut small holes in a plastic Tupperware type container, then the quail will not waste very much feed.

      If you ferment the food and serve it like wet oatmeal it will have a bunch more nutrients and the birds can’t scatter it around like crumbles.
      They’ll also drink far less water since they’ll get most of their moisture from the food.

  • @kleineroteHex

    thanks for the info, I had wondered about that, since my husband is against chickens where we live..... do quail and chickens get along together? I need to do some more research!!!! We have seen foxes as well as hawks on occasion, possum here and there and skunks , skunks, skunks LOL but limited space. Love your chicken run!!!! Then there would be ducks, love duck eggs but not so the meat, guess I could learn to make it "right". What about guineas?

    • @Proverbs31Homestead
      @Proverbs31Homestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have not raised quail and chickens in the same enclosure, and the general consensus is that the chickens may peck and even kill quail. I do think you could put the quail in cages in a chicken run, allowing the chickens to scratch through their poop and dropped feed. BUT chickens can give quail various diseases, the most serious being coryza. Apparently, in quail this disease shows few symptoms until the bird is at death's door. Ducks tend to be noisy, unless you get a quackless breed, and they make a real mess of the yard because they dig with their bills. Guineas are SUPER loud, but if that's not an issue, they can be a bug-eating boon.
