    I agree with the fact that the Magical Mystery Tour album should also have been included in this box set, as it was originally an American release. both the MONO and STEREO mixes of these songs can easily fit onto a single CD

      Also agree... AND make the original EP part of the official "canon" the beatles released. Everything about that album bothers me that it's now considered one of the 13 "official" Beatles releases. The original EP is not only better, but the album cover is better (same cover minus the stupid border with track listings, which the beatles not in a million years would have put track listings in a shitty font on the front of an album). It also came with this cool booklet with fun artwork and a little story in it. The EP of Mystery tour should be part of the Beatles official releases, and the album we all know and love should be part of the Capitol discography.

    Hi Mike, this is Howard Weber. Back in 1988, I was the first person to put together a list of all the different mixes and variations of the Beatles songs - Mono vs Stereo. I was 36 at the time. I sent the list to Goldmine Mag. and they published it. When George Martin mixed their recordings, he did it for 2 Countries only. England and the U.S.A. And because of this, many of the U.S.A. albums had different mixes and variations. Example: And I love her. The British mix has reverb on Paul`s vocals and the USA has dry vocals. On the USA stereo of-- I call your name,- the cowbell comes in at a different time than the British stereo. The mono Something New has many songs with different mixes than the British. So does the mono and stereo Yesterday and Today album. Do you know what the difference is between the mono and stereo version of Misery. The mono has 5 piano opening notes. The stereo has 6 piano opening notes. Also, when Mark Lewisohn`s book THE BEATLES RECORDING SESSIONS came out, I found 2 mistakes. I wrote to him and he agreed with me. Here`s what they were. George Martin said he had made a stereo mix in 1964 of I CALL YOUR NAME but was never used. Well guess what, it was used on the Beatles 2nd album because the next time I CALL YOUR NAME was mixed into stereo was in the 70`s. The other mistake was the song THE WORD. Martin said he made a different mix but wasn`t used. Well it was used on the USA stereo version of RUBBER SOUL. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. I use my friends site NEIL LESSER, so ignore his name. ---- Howard Weber

    Mono box includes 1965 stereo mixes of Help and Rubber Soul, US box includes the 80s cd mixes, and the 09 stereo mixes that I don’t own. I totally get how folks that bought the original stereo set are just being asked to double dip, but if you just went mono this US set is a great value.

    Mike,
    Great presentation! I own both the 2009 stereo and mono box sets. Having said that, I had ordered five of the individual CD’s From the US Box Set based upon the fact that there are a few scattered exclusive U.S. mixes on The Beatles' Second Album, Something New, Beatles '65, Rubber Soul, and Yesterday and Today; all of which were already made available on The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 & 2 sets but without the master tape sourcing (they used the Capitol masters, which are copies of the originals) and also without the extra reverb. Along with the exclusive American mixes that have their own “quirks” (The extra verse on I’ll Cry Instead, the non-double tracked verse on And I Love Her, the American mixes of Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out, the false start on the stereo version of I’m Looking Through You, etc.
    What made me break down and purchase the full set is that, to my ear, the mono sound of the American Box Set is superior to the versions found on the Mono Box Set released in 2009, I know that everyone claims that the same mixes were used but, again, to my ear, someone really made a better remastered mix for the mono mixes found on the US Box Set. The mixes are more focused, diverse, and also balanced better. I have A/B’d the same songs on both box sets and there is a noticeable difference between the two. After buying the Giles Martin mixed, Deluxe Editions of Sgt. Pepper’s, The White Album, and Abbey Road, the last thing that I wanted to do was go out and buy another expensive box set but, to my ear, the Mono sonic restoration/mixes found on this set are better than the ones found on the 2009 Mono Box Set.
    Do you have any thoughts on this? Have you compared the two side-by-side?
    Also, as a disclaimer, I have not yet done a rigorous comparison of the stereo mixes found on the US Box Set compared to the ones found on the 2009 Remasters. I have compared the mono though and would love to hear other’s thoughts on this subject.
    Thanks!

      Great comment! I can't disagree with you. I think the overall sound on the US Albums is fantastic. It's not an outstandingly overt improvement, but this box was released 5 years after the 2009, so it is possible that slight improvements in technology did provide an ever so slight improvement in sound. I can't say for sure, but I know that I wouldn't complain about the sound on the US Albums, that's for sure!

Also, after Epstein's death (I'm not sure if this is interrelated), the Beatles album structure looked even more strange. Capitol, by releasing LP, did not let the Beatles to spoil their Magical Mystery Tour album. But in the future Capitol could no longer interfere. The situation improved a little by the 1970s, when Capitol released all the best Beatles compilations, for which I am very grateful.

    I was very happy with this set when I purchased it in 2014. I remember preordering it in December 2013. I was not aware of the mixes being used until shortly before it arrived. Overall I am still happy about this as there is more good than bad about the set. I love that it has the unique mixes for the songs off Rubber Soul and Yesterday & Today, even though they use the George Martin 87 mixes for most of those tracks. I do believe it provides a better listening experience with the choice of using true stereo or mono over fake/duophonic mixes. I do have the Capitol Album sets from 2004 and 2006 and while I do enjoy those as well, the Volume 2 set has the incorrect mono mixes for Rubber Soul and Beatles VI which uses the Type B Mono mixes or fold down mixes which were used frequently used on the other US albums. The 2014 set rectified that problem by using the original mono mixes so for me that makes an additional argument in favor of this set. The packaging has it all over the 2004 and 2006 sets as those were rather shoddy but the 2014 is similar to the mono box which is superb. Great collection overall. Nice video. Thanks very much!

    I used to have this set but I had to sell it for personal reasons. I only got it because of the way it looked. It would have been more great if they were more accurate instead of with the sources instead of being set in there ways and insisting on using the 2009 remasters. From Me To You was a 1963 single in the US. Misery, and There's A Place were featured on Introducing... The Beatles (should have been included in The U.S. Albums box set), Sie Liebt Dich (She Loves You) was a 1964 single, I'm Down was the B-Side of the 1965 Help single, and The Inner Light was the B-Side of the 1968 Lady Madonna single. The only songs of the 217 in the UK core catalogue not to be released in the US between 1963-1970 were the single version of Love Me Do, with Ringo on drums, and the "wildlife" version of Across the Universe.
      It would have been nice if a bonus disc was included with The U.S. Albums box, but these missing songs are certainly easy enough to find outside the box.

      Generally, Japanese box set are just put together with more care. I haven't seen the Japanese US box, but they usually include an OBI, a resealable outer plastic covering, and an extra booklet with lyrics in Japanese and English. I do have The Japan box which comes that way, and I've seen other box sets get this treatment. Overall, they're just made with such care and attention.

    • @debessar95
      @debessar95 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In Japanese release outer sleeves are constructed the same way as it used to be for US Capitol LPs of the 60s: the front photo was pasted separately on the outer cover like a hamburger. There is also better color grading, more authentic copying of cardboard and paper, discs are without defects. The size of the box corresponds to the size of the Japanese Beatles In Mono box (made in Japan for Japan), so you can put them side by side as two parts of one collection. There is an additional lyric booklet with the full title of this release on the cover. OBI is designed in the style of a Japanese mono box (made in Japan for Japan), which adds to the feeling of a single collection. And much more. The Japanese mini LP culture is superior to any other. This is immediately noticeable in a huge number of little things.

    A great piece, though I personally prefer their UK catalogue as the recordings have not been messed around with by the engineers at Capitol records. Remixing song sequence on the LP's, boosting volume and adding reverb only managed to muddy the sound. So I will take a pass on the U.S. Collection.

    • @MagicalMysteryMike

      So this box set, controversially, set to correct some of that. It retains some key elements but otherwise it's similar to the 2009 remasters.

  • @debessar95
    @debessar95 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don't think the UK albums are the benchmark. They just offered what the band had written and recorded at the time, apart from a few of the best songs released as singles. Just an exhibition of achievements, a chaotic set of songs. The LP titles were hardly smarter: With The Beatles, Beatles For Sale, The Beatles. What's intellectual about that? Capitol was in a better position and could choose songs from the British chaos. That's why at first they were just successful collections of hits, but starting with Beatles 65 and Beatles VI Capitol albums became story-driven, and then meaningful titles like Yesterday And Today were added. In addition, Capitol compiled albums from singles, and the correctness of this approach was recognized even in London including Magical Mystery Tour in the core catalog. A good album does not depend on the number of songs - it's a story to be told. Therefore, I do not understand those who consider Capitol albums worse just because they have two songs less. But Pepper also contains twelve songs and The Beatles Again LP sounds more lighter and hipp than the British Let It Be. Meet The Beatles is much more beautiful in design than its British brother and more interesting in content. Both 1964/1965 soundtracks are excellent in every way and are superior to the British. The Beatles Story is a masterpiece in its own right. Rubber Soul US is even visually better than the British one. Yesterday And Today and Revolver exemplify the proper layout of story albums. The Capitol outer sleeves are thicker, more impressive, more beautiful, the albums themselves are more interesting to dive into and have more design. And, yes, I like both Capitol Boxes and US Box. The original sound is powerful, resonant, and the new one reproduces it with first generation master tapes - the best solution. Just buy both, that's all. They are quite inexpensive.

      Roll Over Beethoven was presented in both Mono and Stereo on Volume 1 of The Capitol Albums. The stereo version has all that extra reverb added. The Mono fold downs on 2 CDs of the earlier Capitol Albums set were mistakes later rectified by Capitol. Back then you can send the fold down discs to Capitol and they sent you the correct, real Mono version. The second pressing of this set had the corrected Mono discs. The separate paper you described as an "Obi" on the CDs individually sold is not an Obi. Obi means band, the paper on the CD is not a banded strip of paper like those found on Japanese albums.

    • @MagicalMysteryMike
      @MagicalMysteryMike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      RJ Araneta yes, the second volume of The Capitol Albums has that issue. A real pain to distinguish which is which without actually playing the discs. I have the correct copy, but only after receiving the incorrect mixes. As far as the obi, wound you accept obi-like? I’m not sure what else to call that.

    • @rjaraneta913

      @@MagicalMysteryMike I hope you didn't take my post in a negative manner and getting on your case. It was made in the spirit of giving more information. Almost everyone who knows about Japanese pressings mistakenly calls that folded paper on the Capitol Albums CDs an Obi. The original reason for Obi's were to give information to their domestic consumers who may not know foreign languages printed on albums released there. As for the for the corrected Mono discs... an easier way to know which is which, is to look at the UPC/serial numbers on the outer box. They are different from each other. Those who want to know can do a little internet research for the numbers. Keep up the great contents!
