I recently graduated CDL-school and (knock on wood) getting ready to start my first trucking job. The CDL school did not teach me how to hook/unhook and from the looks of it, the company i'm in the hiring-process with wont be giving me a trainer. So thank you for explaining how to connect/disconnect the trailer
Thank you for much! I am writing a scene where a trucker is attaching a trailer. This was extremely helpful to me. I do appreciate you making this video.
Best video on hooking I've ever seen. Only one thing I may add, could you make another video of exactly this but also showing the switches you press aka the air bags etc? I and others I'm sure would appreciate it. Thank you for even doing this.
before you back under the trailer, you should get out and make sure the kingpin is in line with the truck fifth wheel, very important. Don't just assume that if the wheels are in line with the trailer, the kingpin is in as well. Must get out and check, Also check before you back under the trailer to make sure the fifth wheel is not too high in relation to the trailer height. Not every truck is same height. Few more items you needed to cover but all in all, good video.
According to the rule book, your suppose to back up and hook Air lines BEFORE fully connecting to the trailer to keep it from moving backwards while you back up into it. Also you are suppose to turn the truck off and keys in pocket when underneath the trailer.
The manual also says to bring the landing gear to the ground and then give it a few extra turns to take some pressure off of the tractor for easier uncoupling/coupling. This is the second video I've seen today that contradicts the Kansas commercial driver's manual. Are these situations where manuals say one thing but in practice it's done in another way? That's not going to help anyone about to take a written or driving test.
Thank you for the video, I'm studying for a class A and the book starting talking about 5th wheel and king pin but didn't tell me what those where in any other section bedore..
So when you back under the trailer, you don't get out and connect your lines first? I ask because in the commercial drivers manual for NY state it states air line should be attached to trailer befor full backing under the trailer.
That book was written before spring parking brakes were invented. In the old days the parking brake depended on the air tank on trailer not leaking down while parked, so had to charge lines to hold the trailer. To be safe, just nudge the trailer gently before backing all the way under. If it moves there is a failure someplace, time to check things out.
I noticed that your landing Gear was about 1 inch above the ground when disconnecting and your 5th wheel had fresh grease and when you backed in i believe the grease was whiped off on the front of the trailer. Would it not be better to put the landing gear all the way down to the ground so when you reconnect ther would be sufficent frease on the upper cupler plate? just asking

My school never taught me either which is insane since I paid them $6,500 for 2 weeks

You a script writer?
Thank you for keeping it straight and simple. 👍
The boss asked me if I knew how to hook a trailer up, I said I did and I didn’t your video save me for sure. Thanks.👍🏼🤙🏼

Every truck is different

Yup exactly my thoughts
How do you measure if it’s the same height as the truck I cant just smell it
Good video, I'm coming to western Express this weekend
King Savage you still there?
@@williamhope5886 lol I doubt it
You look like Denzel Washington! Thank you for the video
I was going to say the same. The beard, teeth, the face behind the beard, the cap and the glasses.
Thank you
All us humans look the same.
Sounds like hannibal buress

@@numbzinger350 The manuals were written back in the '60s. Back then, there were no spring brakes.

Thanx for stressing the flashlight test coz I had assigned too little importance, but ur right its necessary no matter what.
not even a trucker. but i always wondered. thank you
I am not a trucker too but I am making a Lego semi truck. I am using this video as a reference.
Great Job And Tutorial
Aren't we suppose to check if the trailer brakes work before we put the 5th wheel under the Trailer? What say you?
That's true three points of contact I've nearly fallen before
Great instructional video. Thank you!
Thankyou my brother! well done
You are awesome man. 😊
THANK YOU ABOUT TO TAKE MY PERMIT TEST. GODBLESS DRIVE SAFE
Excellent! thank you!
Did you drop the tractor to reconnect

KEEP ON TRUCKING FREEDOM TRUCKERS 👍🏻👌🏿
When you connect should your air bags still be dropped?
Good explanations
If you cant get underneath, do a sharp turn, 90 degrees, and step out, now you can walk tall behind the truck and see it clearly
I need a mentor and trainer like him
Helpful video ... Thanks
Thanks for the video
Not shown which is the first hose to connect the trailer. The supply or the input
Can you lease a high roof freightliner for flatbed at western express or just flat tops?
Read up on leasing might change your mind look up mother trucker on u tube
Can I tow my own Semitrailer with my own Semi Truck?
You didn't show me how to release the locking jaw oh to verify its position
Thank you!!
No trailer brake?

I believe he kept it an inch off the ground to drive test forward few feet to see if jaw is locked on the shank kingpin
Are u relatively to jarrett Massey he has an amazing video and so does u thank man
Denzel W knows whats good
Maybe am your next super star driver!😇
Dangm I never knew that King pin is only the size of my ankle. Pretty small for hauling all them weights.
super fantastic
Denzel Washington trying to hide himself with a beard, glassss & a hat
Nice
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️
Easy
Good video but always have a hard hat on when you get underneath the trailer any time .
What's three points of contact
both hands holding onto something and your feet planted on something so you have 3 points of contact and dont fall
Bing
Too much waste of time, with 3 point this and that... Just need to back in connect, and take off, like pros do.
It’s a waste of time till it’s not. 3 points of contact at all times slick
How to hook and unhook a trailer properly, step #1 don't work at western express. Lol
Why 3 points of contact?
Nice
