Yellow plates were introduced in 1970, mandatory by 1973, not 1979...
I would doubt if more than 10% of the population knew they had different coloured numbers plate front and rear.And as for being able to tell if a vehicle is coming or going, there are other identifiers that you notice before the number plate.
