Johnnie, my all time favorite, appeared to be a favorite guest of Ed Sullivan, had him on his show almost every year. From the polite applause on his show, it doesn't sound like he was a teen idol. Only his appearances on Frankie Laine in 56 and Ed Murray dance party in 54(sang 2 songs that never made the charts), you could hear the screams of teenage girls. In UK and Australia he was a super star much more than in US,

Great entertainer. I remember him from the 1950’s. One of the fathers of Rock and Roll.

I first realized who Johnny Ray was back in 1982 when the song "Come On Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners came out and they showed a clip of him in the music video " poor old Johnny Ray sounded sad upon the radio"

You should post Ronnie Dove’s cover of Cry as well. He sang it on Ed Sullivan in 67 and had a big hit with it

I'm looking forward to this! Johnnie Ray was a really big deal in the 1950's and I've never seen his appearance on this episode. "Cry" and "Just Walkin' in the Rain" are great songs. It should be good! I also hope you upload James Melton who sang as well in this episode, and also his "Beyond the Sea" from an earlier episode.

I wish the first two songs were longer, but I'm so glad you didn't cut up the medley. Thank you and good job on this post! I didn't recognize "Should I" by the title, but as soon as he started singing it, I remembered the song! Johnnie was always great!

Ronnie Dove also did Cry on the Ed Sullivan show, complete with Ed giving a dialogue about how Johnnie did it on his show first. Would love to see Ronnie's version show up on TH-cam (maybe I'm partial because I work for Ronnie).

i've barely known of Johnnie Ray (and never heard him until now). I've now watched this and a few other videos of him singing. The biographies that I'm reading of him say he was a precursor to rock and roll. But to judge from the songs he's singing, the only precursor I can see is chronological. He is a very good singer, but he strikes me more as a torch singer, kind of a male Patsy Cline if you will. And she is hardly any precursor to rock and roll.
What am I missing? Other songs that are more rocking and rolling?

Listen to the studio recording of "Cry", issued on Okeh in 1951. The Four Lads did backup vocals. The tie to rock and roll is more evident, especially in contrast to other records of the day. He had been tutored by LaVern Baker. Johnnie Ray recordings issued on Columbia never had a backbeat that I ever heard.

It's not his songs or arrangements that are like rock and roll, it's his emotional style of singing and delivery. He emoted when he sang in a way that few pop singers had done before and was known to some critics as "The Prince of Wails". He was a really great singer who put everything into his songs. He really let loose! That's the connection with rock and roll.

I agree. Ray had nothing to do with Rock and Roll, except maybe the female hysteria associated with it. If so, they may as well say that Frank Sinatra was Rock and Roll as well.

harvardkarbodie If you would like to see more of Johnnie Ray. I would recommend that you obtain the 20th Century Fox DVD There’s no Business Like Show Business. The songs are by Irving Berlin, but The songs assigned to Johnnie are arranged in his style.
