    The AoE2:DE ai is even more impressive once you dig into how it's scripted; the ai scripts are literally just thousands upon thousands of "if->then" rules which somehow piece together into a coherent and somewhat lifelike ai AND it's more or less just coded by a single guy, who started as a hobbyist.

    I have a lot of love for Rome 1, and there are some positives in the remastered version, but unfortunately, the gripes about the remaster, leave me with a tragically familiar disappointment that I've had with CA ever since the release of Rome 2. {Yes I know this was re-made by a different company) The UI is good, better in some ways than the original, but its a remaster and they should of left the old UI in it so we could choose what we wanted. I think the scrolls droping down the right hand side at the beginning of the turn was just beautiful, and if you chose not to read them and ended the turn, They were lost to the annuls of history...instead theres the annoying tri-fector. The towns and cities, (in the battles) but the towns in particular should of just been enlarged by atleast a third of the size of the original, (if this could of been done) which I believe, would of sorted most of the pathfinding problems you have in town battles. I have tested the orignal with the remastered version and I disagree that the tinkering they have done to AI is an improvement, in a lot of cases it isnt. I could go on with the lists of disappointments but whats the point, this is what I've come to expect from a CA game, disappointment.
    If they remaster medieval 2, what I would hope for is updated graphics, great sound, fix the bugs that were still in the game. thats it. Dont add your own mark to the game dont mess with the UI or even the AI if its not going to be a real improvement, and if you do, leave an option to let us, the players, to have the choice of using it or not. IMO it doesnt need an improvement, thats is why we want medieval 3.
    Just found your channel, have to say, really enjoying your content :)

    Basically people who haven't played Rome 1 since they were 12 are playing it again and realising its a game from 2004 and feels like trash in battles. The nostalgia crew who continue to play it never did and don't care about the dodgy battles because they all play mods and just look at the pretty units and role play, which is fine but its not critical of the game. I almost feel like it would have been better recieved if they actually did less, and just made the original game fully optimised and compatible with modern systems with a few fixes and nothing else. But like all recent CA products this one tries to be two things at once, a remake and a remaster.

  • @lars9925
    @lars9925 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I agree with every single point you made about the campaign, the battles, the UI etc., but I totally disagree with your conclusions. Which is because I would weigh the points of criticism very differently.
    1. This is easily the best Total War campaign experience since Medieval 2: Soldiers are not spellbound to generals, population is back, no building limitations, auto manage, taxation of individual cities, Rebel towns at the start of the game, territories can be traded etc.
    2. Battles are not great, but also not bad, they are OK (for all the reasons you mentioned). You just have to get used to the old mechanics again and help the pathfinding a bit. In return, you get pre-Warscape battles that just look and feel so much better... And the AI is also OK. Apart from a few dropouts it flanks your phalanx, attacks from different directions if you try to block bottlenecks and a cavalry attack from behind and your army will be mercilessly routed.
    3. The UI is not ideal, it needs getting used to, but after a few hours it is quite manageable.
    This game is a solid 85/100 in my book.

    The question " will Rome Remastered dethrone Rome2? " is wrong, in my opinion :)
    They are two completely different games, and need to be played in completely different ways.
    TW games are quite more complex today, improved in almost every aspect than older ones. So, a player who discovered this series with Rome2 or Attila, probably will find RomeRem archaic and graphically obsolete, whereas one who has begun playing TW in those days and still plays it, will feels himself at home in RomeRem :)
    My favourites remain Rome 1 and Empire, the first two I played ages ago, but I appreciate modern TW games too. (I like also Medieval 1, to be honest ahah)
    The correct question is: "Why shall we choose between Rome 1 and Rome 2, when we can play both? " :)
    - One last note: I never, never noticed that we can give group attack order in TW, before watching this video... I've been using the individual order method like in Rome1 until now ahahah

    I’m really enjoying Rome Remastered but I hope for other titles like Medieval and Empire we get actual sequels instead of remasters. Some parts of the game just haven’t aged well and a remaster wouldn’t fix that.
    Still, I’d love it if Creative Assembly could take some of the features which hold up here (family trees, armies not tied to generals, more stuff to build in campaign) and combine them with the great battles we get in modern Total War titles. A synthesis of the things the old games did better and the stuff the newer games excel at.

    @
    HappyCompyTW Overall nice review, but I have to correct your statements regarding Three Kingdoms :
    1) Population in 3K doesn't work like in Rome, in Rome, the population are actual people who pay taxes or get enlisted - if you don't have them you don't have a way to replenish/get new units/get more money. If you loot or exterminate a settlement for easy cash, don't be surprised if you don't have enough people to enlist in to your army in that village afterward. Everything else like buildings and what not is a modifier on that number - in 3K its exactly the opposite, meaning the population is the modifier and its the buildings which give you the income. Romes system is far better objectively because the features ties the battle and the campaign together, you play the battles so you can keep your units who aren't being able to be replenished everywhere alive and well or send them back to places where you have the population so you can keep you veteran powerful units.
    2) Three kingdoms traits are triggered by random events, Rome's beauty was that the traits were a reflection of the life the character had, while not perfect that system worked far better than in most total war games by being both dynamic and player action based - Three Kingdom's traits are random, you can win a battle and exterminate a settlement and the next turn recieve with the character a pacifist trait. Even worse because of how powerful special characters are not getting them is just stupid and while for some people playing as famous characters sounds fun and exciting - for me and many others the beauty of the old Total War games was their sandbox nature - the fact you played with unknown characters which grew and developed with the player across the campaign made them unique and fun and memorable (especially thanks to the trait system), Three Kingdoms Troy and Warhammer killed that with Total War games.
    p.s. There is plenty to love with 3K, it just could have been much better if CA did really go back on some aspects which were great while still doing many of hte improvements the game has.

    • @happycompy
      @happycompy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good writeup, I should have mentioned that 3k's population was different than Rome's and Medieval 2's in its functionality. Still, its existence is a step in the right direction! That's a shame about the traits in 3K. Even Rome 2, Attila, and Warhammer have action-triggered traits.

    Ok, this one will get a dislike from me. Formation locking? Haven't used it in any total war games. Path finding in sieges sucks, tho, that much I can agree. But UI is not that bad, alerts being divided into your empire alerts and then world wide alerts is just logical. Wait for a few patches and modding scene, also campaign is already better than Rome 2 lol

  • @countmrvhs776
    @countmrvhs776 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The locked-group-formation-not-attacking-sensibly is weird, because in the original RTW, you can absolutely get your units in a group, give an attack order, and they'll choose sensible targets (instead of all attacking the one enemy unit you clicked).
    I haven't tried this myself in the remaster, but it's bizarre that it wouldn't be there.

      @@MsSirAndy Yes, if the issues with the battles I outlined here in the video are fixed, then the game will be worth putting hours into imo. Also I just tested it and ROME 1 also does the same thing with units converging to the center ufortunately.

    • @countmrvhs776
      @countmrvhs776 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@happycompy I double-checked myself just now - on RTW, grouped up 6 praetorian cav vs 7 Libyan spears and gave an attack order, where they did converge to the center.
      Figured I might be remembering behavior from a BI-based mod, so I tried again in vanilla (original) BI. Here, at first the units did converge, but on 2 later tests my grouped units actually chose different, kind of sensible targets.
      So it's not consistent, which is nice because at least we're both sort of right (:P) It does make me wonder if the feature is in the remaster as well, and we just haven't noticed because, well, it's not consistent.

    So basically you are critizing the Rome I Remaster for not being so modern as a new Total Wars. But I think you're missing the point that it was supposed to be just remaster of original version, so I really dont understand why you expect CA to do any new features on a REMASTER of Rome I.

  • @arnabsarkar4735
    @arnabsarkar4735 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just an older Rome 1 and Medieval 2 player, what is so difficult about making the units group together, bring them to melee range and then order each of them to attack the unit in front of them? Seriously how much effort does it take? Clicking is too much now?? Same for the pathfinding and other "jank". If you learn the clicking rules and how to fit formations into cities, city battles go smoothly. It's a learn to play thing, though I would say that the extreme unit formations don't help (i think we should limit unit size to large at the max to avoid insane pathfinding problems). Also the fact that units become entrenched in combat and don't respond immediately is a feature I wish the newer titles had. You have to anticipate how well the melee will go and moving troops feels weighty and decision making while in combat is so much rewarding. Playing as barabrians unit control becomes even more difficult since they are less disciplined and it is much easier for Romans and Greeks.

      I can give you a list of petty accomplishments on a resume but in the end what will stand out are the big things.
      Rome 1 has a lot of really good aspects but a lot of them are minor details like population and character traits. The game was great for its time but simply put many of the bigger things it just doesn't have. Rome 1 lacks world immersion which Attila and Rome 2 have with the faction diversity and realism (all are not great but Rome 1 egypt) It's Ai is bad, diplomacy is pathetic. I've watched a LegendTotalWar video where he made peace with the Sassanids in Empire Divided Rome 1 when his faction had 1 city left with 1 unit and being beseiged by 3 stacks of Sassanid armies.
      Even regarding the combat system itself the game is different (not worse) then all the newer ones apart from Med 2, but if you are going to enjoy the combat of the old games, Med 2 is vastly superior in that regard as the AI is much more functional and the units feel like they have a bit better weight to them. There is a reason Medieval 2 stood the test of time while base game Rome 1 did not

    I agree with everything except competing with the newer games.
    I want it to compare, but I don’t expect it to compare. I mean Rome 2, and 3 Kingdoms cost at least twice as much with ZERO DLC. For me, it was quadruple the price since I got it for $15 and it came with 2 DLC.
    And eventually Rome Remastered will go on sale and get even cheaper AND probably get a few updates to improve a few things...and the mods...let’s not forget the mods coming down the pipe.

      Yeah, the price is definitely a +point for the Remaster. You definitely do get a lot for you money. Still, for newcomers, I'd recommend holding onto that $30 and waiting for a sale on one of the newer games which go down to $20 like once every 3-5 months. Btw ROME 2 and WH1 should not still cost $60, that's ridiculous.

  • @Warmaker01

    I don't have RTW Remastered, but Battle AI was always bad in RTW, exploited easily. Most especially in sieges, it gets silly as the AI struggles. The grouped formations thing? That's why for many years I was allergic to the idea of moving my army in one big mass because the games handled it poorly. RTW demanded more micromanagement of units. Even then there'd be some weird stuff, especially inside city walls.
    Also, I still vividly recall Vanilla RTW was fun but it got stale. What really saved RTW back in the day to me were the mods. RTW was where Total War got a vibrant modding community. For me the best at the time was "Rome Total Realism" and "Europa Barbarorum" mods.

I was hoping it would be Rome I with Rome II graphics, mechanics, etc but with Rome 1 storyline and stuff. In general I love the Roman history so I agree with the review. Having never played the original and Rome II being my first ever TW game, this was disappointing for me but I can see how for those who played and loved the first this would be on their list. I also got it mostly to play the Alexander the Great stuff as I also love that time period. Still playing Rome 2…
