This was my strategy many years ago - sleep by bus - walk town/city/site -> get back on night bus (been there done that) The problem with this strategy, is that there is a lot of missed beauty looking out the windows of the bus/plane/train. I did this several times over the years - 8 hour bus-ride from Oaxaca (city) to Pachutla (Zipolite). Oaxaca has some beautiful countryside. The coast, some high-desert, and winding roads through mountains just like Chiapas.
