    The Titanic really did steal the spotlight from her sisters, great to hear Olympic getting some recognition for her long and successful career long after her sisters went down.

      So the Olympic was damaged but insurance wouldn't ante up. So they painted Titanic on the side (since the Titanic was being built while this was happening) and launched the Olympic disguised as the Titanic on its "maiden" voyage. On board were economists heading to America that opposed the creation of the federal reserve. Jp Morgan was supposed to get on as well, but decided not to at the last minute. It was then sunk, I believe, intentionally.

    • @CapriUni
      @CapriUni 2 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      That was written by Robbie Sattin (fellow in the lower left corner, and singer of the first and last verses). And I agree, it's a gem (and a *true* story worth telling).

    • @TheEmeraldMenOfficial
      @TheEmeraldMenOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed, I was the same way until I googled it looking for the history behind the song! They’ve done a lot of original ones, one of my other favourites is Fire and Flame: about the Halifax Explosion. I’ve been to Halifax many times, sailed through the exact spot the collision occurred, and followed the currents to Pier 6 for part of the way, so the song feels extra real to me. I even memorized Patrick Vincent Coleman’s last message as it was most likely to have been transmitted: “STOP TRAIN. MUNITIONS SHIP AFIRE IN THE HARBOUR. MAKING FOR PIER 6. WILL EXPLODE. THIS IS MY LAST MESSAGE. GOODBYE BOYS.”

    • @TheEmeraldMenOfficial
      @TheEmeraldMenOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CapriUni Also, I’m surprised they left some of Olympic’s adventures out, plenty of stories over those 33 years of service! Just as an example, her main reason for retiring was having rammed and sank the Nantucket Lightship the exact same way she sank the U-boat twenty years before, cutting it clean in two: the only difference is that it was accidental and due to fog. If she’d had another mile of visibility the collision wouldn’t have happened, and there’s footage of her entering harbour after the accident: in fact, the footage contains the best recording we have of her whistles!

    • @douglasparkinson4123
      @douglasparkinson4123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      how is the fact they wrote it making it not a "legit shanty". they are a shanty band, and if they write a shanty, its a shanty. you can't say that a noir novel isn't a noir novel because it wasn't written in the 30s.

    In the Belfast yard where she was made, of Harland-Wolff design,
    The plan was struck to build three ships that funds would not define
    The gantry raised up in '08, a nameless liner rose
    To make the journey to New York in record time, and so!
    She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall!
    Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she’ll run for decades more!
    She’ll run for decades more!
    Olympic soon became her stamp, no finer ship did sail
    Smoking rooms and Turkish baths and palm trees rail to rail
    As sleek and striking as could be, and speed second to none
    She sailed from Portsmouth Dock and showed the world how it was done
    She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
    Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she’ll run for decades more
    She’ll run for decades more
    The Hawke was running 'long her side around the Isle of Wight
    A swing to starboard up and took the helmsman by surprise
    Two holes were punched into her side and water flooded in
    She staggered back to Portsmouth Dock and lived to sail again
    She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
    Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she’ll run for decades more
    She’ll run for decades more
    Titanic sank into the depths, Britannic joined her too
    And through the wars Olympic kept on sailing sure and true
    Missions out in open sea with U-boats in her stead
    Damn near cut them clean in two and sank them to the bed
    She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
    Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she’ll run for decades more!
    She’ll run for decades morel
    Well, every dog must have its day and all good things must pass
    Shipyards forged much bigger crafts that dwarfed her in her class
    The trips were few and fares declined, the world marched on ahead
    They pulled her down in Jarrow town, still striking to the end
    She's the pride of the White Star Line, may her engines never stall
    Her sisters died from 'berg and mine, but she’ll run for decades more!
    She’ll run for decades more!
    She’ll run for decades more!

    One of my favorites! This is so beautiful. The acoustics there in the stairwell are awesome. Very nostalgic too, for me. I think a lot of us remember singing and hollering in stairwells and halls at school or elsewhere for the acoustic effect. I remember when I was a teenager I used to sneak into the middle school on Saturdays and play piano and sing on the stage in their auditorium and just enjoy the music and solitude. 🥰 Love the simplicity and rawness of this recording. Really showcases how good your voices really are. Sometimes with folks, you strip away the instruments and studio mixing and touch-ups and there's not much left, but that could never be said of you four. 💛😊

    I just listened to your cover of 'Fairytale of New York' and it made me think that it'd be really cool to get an album of all Christmas song covers, obviously it's a bit late for that to happen this year (or maybe not, idk the logistics behind that) but maybe for the holidays next year. The album could be called something like "Christmas Time (Holidays) with the Longest Johns" or "Longest Johns resting by an open fire"
    Obviously just a suggestion, doesn't have to happen. Just thought I'd put it out there so you guys knew that there is at least some interest in that sort of thing
