I am very thankful that I live in a country and a culture where circumcision is not "the norm". That Dr gaslighting Ashley honestly made my blood boil! When I was circumcised they took too much off. It has caused problems but nothing that severely impacts my daily life or sex life. I wish I was never circumcised and support banning this ridiculous practice.

Technically speaking the Dr was correct. The overwhelming majority of circ’d males have no problems whatsoever. From Ashley’s account (on Facebook) it appears he suffered a bodged circ, with too much skin removed, and possibly an unnecessary one too, so understandably he’s pissed off. But his case is not representative, and it is unfair to castigate all circumcisions just because his was done badly. There are plenty of males around who have suffered badly, or even died, from conditions that would have been prevented had they been circ’d. Only last year a 26-year-old lad (Dale Clarke) died of penile cancer, leaving a fiancé and two kids. I wonder how he’d have felt had he known that if he’d been circ’d as an infant he’d never have got the cancer. Circ is also recognised as vital in high-HIV settings, it being very effective in preventing female to male transmission. It is unfair to focus on very rare cases of things going wrong, whilst ignoring the far greater benefits. It is like saying we shouldn’t vaccinate because, just occasionally, a child dies from an adverse reaction. Never mind that far more lives are saved.

In fact, their statistics don't even make sense when examined. As for penile cancer, really? How common is penile cancer? Circumcised men _also_ develop penile cancer, so that argument is just as weak. One last point: Most of men in the world are intact, and the vast majority of them experience no problems at all. No UTIs, no penile cancer. None of the rubbish that the medical community insists that foreskin causes. It's perfectly fine to leave men as they were meant to be.

And you are wrong. Medical circ results in a roughly 70 % relative risk reduction in female to male HIV transmission according to the most recent meta-analyses. But is ineffective for other modes. You don’t state your country, but perhaps it is one where most transmission is by other means, unaffected by circ. I know of no studies at all on “male genital mutilation” and HIV, but there are many on male circumcision and HIV. Criticisms of those studies have all been thoroughly debunked to the satisfaction of all medical bodies dealing with the epidemic. Excepting rare cases where it is bodged (and cases like Ashley’s ARE rare) medical circ has no adverse effect on sexual function and brings with it a wide range of medical and health benefits. It is now recognised as vital in the fight against HIV and is being heavily promoted in epidemic settings with the approval of the WHO, CDC, UNAIDS, PEPFAR, Gates Foundation, Marie Stopes and various local bodies dealing with the epidemic.

But no-one with a foreskin needs to be disease-ridden ; that's what soap and water are for. I take my hat off to all those men who are regrowing, or have regrown their foreskin. It may be difficult but nothing that's worth doing is easy. And it's much easier for a man to regrow a lost foreskin than to get pregnant, which is allegedly a mainstream view now.
@@davidlawes4954 Genetic evidence indicates HIV crossed to humans in Africa in the 1920s, giving it a massive head start compared to Europe where it did not get going until the 1980s. Whilst condoms help, they have proven insufficient, but where medical circumcision is being rolled out in Africa HIV incidence is falling, and falling faster in men than women as it protects men directly. And no amount of soap and water will protect from HIV. All the best evidence indicates that the procedure has no adverse effect on function & pleasure. You are experiencing a placebo effect with your new foreskin. There have also been cases of restorers who have injured themselves in the process, or been disappointed with the outcome, even going on to get circumcised again. I would like to see a proper study into restoring, and just how many restorers are satisfied with the outcome, and what the complication rate is. It is seriously under-researched.
Almost all circumcisions are not medical. If it was medical, it would be called surgery. But it’s not which is why it’s called a procedure. Suggest looking up definitions for medical and medicine. (1) There have been some proposed "health benefits" to some forms of female circumcision. Indeed, it is not uncommon for cultures that practice "FGM" to cite benefits in health and hygiene. If research into "FGM" benefits was allowed then it is likely that benefits would be found. And if they were found would that make "FGM" okay? (2) Circumcision is harmful by definition. It is the destruction of genital tissue. It involves pain (often extreme pain), which constitutes a form of harm. When done without patient consent it may be considered a violation, which is also a form of harm. And if anything goes wrong then there are additional harms. The only question is whether the harms of circumcision (or any surgery) are outweighed by (actual or potential) benefits. (3) I'm not quite sure how cutting off a boy's prepuce in a hospital is a "medical procedure" but cutting off a girl's prepuce in a hospital is not a "medical procedure". Nor do I understand how the latter is a "human rights violation" but the former is not. A person may feel 'mutilated' because: (i) they are missing a body part they want, (ii) they have been physically scarred, (iii) they suffered a botched operation, (iv) any combination of (i)-(iii). This can be as a result of a genital surgery/cutting or because of surgery/cutting to any part of the body.

Genital mutilation by another name, apart from urgent medical reasons should not be done unless other treatments have not worked, and also councelling should be given to prepare in such cases. This argument of importance to faith is utterly flawed. Parents should not assume that their children are automatically going to embrace the religion into which they are born--or any religion at all--especially in today's world. If circumcision is that much a part of the Islamic and Jewish cultures, why perform it only on males? After all, females do have the equivalent of foreskins. If, in any culture, it is outlawed in females only--why? It is fascinating to me (and not in a good way) that both representatives of the Muslim and Jewish religions in this video are so steadfast, and that the Muslim is so outrageously dismissive. Each one, however, in blind "wisdom", failed to state his respective faith's exact reason for this foolhardy procedure. For those who argue that phimosis is a good reason for circumcision: it is a fact that the foreskin can be stretched over a period of time, eliminating the need for circumcision. I've seen this firsthand. Yes, there are certainly complications in some instances where circumcision is justified, but they are relatively few and far between. For those who want to "play the hygiene card", my answer is quite simple: soap and water.

I was circumcised at birth as were 99 % of my friends here in Canada. I LOVE being circumcised and have never met another guy that was disappointed being circumcised in my years (69 yo). I had my son circumcised at birth and was there to watch. It was very quick and he cried for some 30 seconds. At 31, most of his friends are circumcised as well.

We all have different experiences. I was circumcised at 20. The best thing I have done. It was my decision. I hated having the extra skin. Now I love looking at myself. I am clean all the time and I last longer at intercourse. I can be spontaneous with sex and not have to worry about washing up . My friend saw how happy I am and he will be having it done next week as an out patient. I will be there with him.
If you chose it for yourself as an adult then it's fine. No one has an issue with adult circumcision (for any reason). Some adults elect to have rhinoplasty surgery. But 99.9% of adults don't. Should all children be given nose jobs because a few adults will end up wanting them? Obviously not. Also, I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of adults who choose to get circumcised for non-medical reasons (like yourself) are living in a circumcising society (e.g. the USA).

Well, sadly, one of the words being thrown by most bullies especially in our elementary days if there's a small argument would be to ask the opponent if he's circumcised or not. Then they would start to confront someone to show what really under his pants, if someone refused they will force him for them see and mock him even more. It was common for most baby boys to be circumcised in the UK up to the 1950's regardless of faith. It was claimed it was necessary for hygiene reasons. My wife's grandfather was circumcised as a child and was on the minesweepers during world war 2. They were paranoid that they would be torpedoed by the Germans and if they were taken prisoner and found to be circumcised would be identified as Jewish and be sent to concentration camps.

This is fear mongering crap. There's lots of health and sexual benefits to circumcision and the earlier the procedure is carried out - the better. A very small number of circumcisions don't go the way intended but this doesn't mean it should be discouraged.

Your country has seen a big drop to just 10% of baby boys getting it each year. This doesn't mean the circumcised prevalence rate will be 10% though, it'll be higher overall.

Seeing that doctor dismiss Ashley's experience with a smile is beyond repulsive.
Technically speaking the Dr was correct. The overwhelming majority of circ’d males have no problems whatsoever. From Ashley’s account (on Facebook) it appears he suffered a bodged circ, with too much skin removed, and possibly an unnecessary one too, so understandably he’s pissed off. But his case is not representative, and it is unfair to castigate all circumcisions just because his was done badly. There are plenty of males around who have suffered badly, or even died, from conditions that would have been prevented had they been circ’d. Only last year a 26-year-old lad (Dale Clarke) died of penile cancer, leaving a fiancé and two kids. I wonder how he’d have felt had he known that if he’d been circ’d as an infant he’d never have got the cancer. Circ is also recognised as vital in high-HIV settings, it being very effective in preventing female to male transmission. It is unfair to focus on very rare cases of things going wrong, whilst ignoring the far greater benefits. It is like saying we shouldn’t vaccinate because, just occasionally, a child dies from an adverse reaction. Never mind that far more lives are saved.

Furthermore, everything you just said is absolute rubbish. Circumcision is _not_ very effective at protecting against HIV infection. Had that been the case, HIV infection rates would have dropped in my country where the vast majority of males are circumcised. The statistics of the studies that concluded male genital mutilation was "effective" at preventing HIV transmission were skewed in favour of circumcision. That much is painfully clear. In fact, their statistics don't even make sense when examined. As for penile cancer, really? How common is penile cancer? Circumcised men _also_ develop penile cancer, so that argument is just as weak.
One last point: Most of men in the world are intact, and the vast majority of them experience no problems at all. No UTIs, no penile cancer. None of the rubbish that the medical community insists that foreskin causes. It's perfectly fine to leave men as they were meant to be.

Nevertheless, on technical grounds he was correct. And you are wrong.
Medical circ results in a roughly 70 % relative risk reduction in female to male HIV transmission according to the most recent meta-analyses. But is ineffective for other modes. You don’t state your country, but perhaps it is one where most transmission is by other means, unaffected by circ.
I know of no studies at all on “male genital mutilation” and HIV, but there are many on male circumcision and HIV. Criticisms of those studies have all been thoroughly debunked to the satisfaction of all medical bodies dealing with the epidemic. The lifetime risk of penile cancer is very roughly 1 in 1000, + or - a few 100. It varies from country to country, but in some countries it is one of the most common cancers in men, and is increasingly turning up in young men. Infant, but not adult, circ is highly protective against it.
Actually many men with foreskins do experience problems, as many as half according to this review: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5296634/ although, in fairness, the lead author is notably pro-circ, and they are looking at every little complaint that might arise. Even so, it will not do to be so dismissive. It may not be as clear cut (pardon the pun) as you think.

Excepting rare cases where it is bodged (and cases like Ashley’s ARE rare) medical circ has no adverse effect on sexual function and brings with it a wide range of medical and health benefits. But no-one with a foreskin needs to be disease-ridden ; that's what soap and water are for. I take my hat off to all those men who are regrowing, or have regrown their foreskin. It may be difficult but nothing that's worth doing is easy. And it's much easier for a man to regrow a lost foreskin than to get pregnant, which is allegedly a mainstream view now.

And no amount of soap and water will protect from HIV.
All the best evidence indicates that the procedure has no adverse effect on function & pleasure. You are experiencing a placebo effect with your new foreskin. There have also been cases of restorers who have injured themselves in the process, or been disappointed with the outcome, even going on to get circumcised again. I would like to see a proper study into restoring, and just how many restorers are satisfied with the outcome, and what the complication rate is. It is seriously under-researched.

That is a very one-sided analysis. There is emotion and abuse on *both* sides of this debate (as with most controversial issues). I think it is understandable that many people on both sides have strong emotions about this subject. As for behaviours, no doubt many "anti-circs" speak and act in reprehensible ways (especially online), but *many* "pro-circs" are openly derogatory towards the natural penis, even going so far as to demean or mock intact boys and men. (This is common in some circumcising cultures such as the Philippines and the USA.) Also, many parents are pressured or even harassed by family and even by so-called medical professionals to circumcise their sons. Indeed, sometimes parents aren't even given a choice!

I don't agree with the linked analysis at all.
(1) There have been some proposed "health benefits" to some forms of female circumcision. Indeed, it is not uncommon for cultures that practice "FGM" to cite benefits in health and hygiene. If research into "FGM" benefits was allowed then it is likely that benefits would be found. And if they were found would that make "FGM" okay?
(2) Circumcision is harmful by definition. It is the destruction of genital tissue. It involves pain (often extreme pain), which constitutes a form of harm. When done without patient consent it may be considered a violation, which is also a form of harm. And if anything goes wrong then there are additional harms. The only question is whether the harms of circumcision (or any surgery) are outweighed by (actual or potential) benefits.
(3) I'm not quite sure how cutting off a boy's prepuce in a hospital is a "medical procedure" but cutting off a girl's prepuce in a hospital is not a "medical procedure". Nor do I understand how the latter is a "human rights violation" but the former is not.
(4) If a person (male or female) feels they have been 'mutilated' by an act or procedure done to their body then that is how they feel. You may not agree with their assessment but I think there is enough room in the definition of 'mutilation' to allow for significant subjective scope. A person may feel 'mutilated' because: (i) they are missing a body part they want, (ii) they have been physically scarred, (iii) they suffered a botched operation, (iv) any combination of (i)-(iii). This can be as a result of a genital surgery/cutting or because of surgery/cutting to any part of the body.
I just wish that people who don't want it done to them like my self didn't have it forced on them.

Parents should not assume that their children are automatically going to embrace the religion into which they are born--or any religion at all--especially in today's world. If circumcision is that much a part of the Islamic and Jewish cultures, why perform it only on males? After all, females do have the equivalent of foreskins. If, in any culture, it is outlawed in females only--why?

Each one, however, in blind "wisdom", failed to state his respective faith's exact reason for this foolhardy procedure.
For those who argue that phimosis is a good reason for circumcision: it is a fact that the foreskin can be stretched over a period of time, eliminating the need for circumcision. I've seen this firsthand. Yes, there are certainly complications in some instances where circumcision is justified, but they are relatively few and far between.

I was circumcised at birth as were 99 % of my friends here in Canada. I LOVE being circumcised and have never met another guy that was disappointed being circumcised in my years (69 yo). I had my son circumcised at birth and was there to watch. It was very quick and he cried for some 30 seconds. At 31, most of his friends are circumcised as well.

Well, sadly, one of the words being thrown by most bullies especially in our elementary days if there's a small argument would be to ask the opponent if he's circumcised or not. Sadly he does have mental health issues, which can only undermine his credibility. Taking his story at face value (always risky in these cases) he seems to have suffered a bodged procedure with too much skin removed. If so it is understandable he is upset, but that does not change the fact that the great majority of circ’d males have no problems at all, and there are plenty of males out there who have suffered, even died, from conditions that would have been prevented had they been circ’d as infants.
In North America it’s a common thing made it for medical or aesthetic reasons, elsewhere in the world it’s very rare like in Europe, in Middle East Africa or some parts of Asia it’s a often thing, anyway I don’t think it’s a genital mutilation if it’s made for medical reasons.

This is fear mongering crap. There's lots of health and sexual benefits to circumcision and the earlier the procedure is carried out - the better. A very small number of circumcisions don't go the way intended but this doesn't mean it should be discouraged.
