  • How to Find Gold Locations In Victoria.
    This video is a tutorial on How to find Gold Locations in Victoria using GEOVIC, provided by the Victorian Government. GEOVIC is an interactive mapping tool that provides a multitude of information in "thematic layers" . It can also be used in conjunction with Google Maps.
    I give a Step-by-Step demonstration of accessing and using GEOVIC to find Gold locations in Victoria. I also demonstrate how to make my own "Gold Prospecting Map" using GEOVICs unique detailed "Leads and Workings" overlay. Research is essential to achieving success in the Goldfields, and GEOVIC is an excellent open source research tool for prospectors.

    Wow, I wish this was around in the late 70s/early 80s. It took me months to cross reference areas from historical documents for nugget locations against geological maps until someone told me that the old records used Parish names for locations. Seeing your diggings overlays took me straight back. To the point I may start doing detecting again, but I am not sure if I can endure that digging though the HARD soil in central Vic. LOL

    I know it's over a year old, but thanks for the tutorial. Very detailed, and can run/pause/replay this on one monitor, while I fumble about on the map. It appears to have changed a little, but that's just a matter of checking all the menus to see what they have added. For a fairly complicated setup, I have a good working knowledge in under half an hour. Some heroes don't wear capes (just assuming that you don't). Cheers!

    Good video. I like to make sure my Layers are in the correct order, so that everything is visible. In the video, the Public Land Management layer was sitting above the Watercourses layer - this meant that the watercourses were not visible in any of the coloured crown land areas. I always put the Public Land Management layer at the bottom.

    Hi Alan, thanks for a very informative video. A couple of steps in the video were a bit quick, hence the following questions.
    How did you take a snap shot of the co-ordinates and how did you move from the geovic screen to the paste screen?
    Tony

    • @tonyday1989
      @tonyday1989 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alan, disregard my questions. I was able to print prospecting locations with co-ordinates using geovic web page.
      It was just a matter of playing with their software to learn how to download the info. Thanks again for the video.
      Tony

    • @AussieBlokeProspector
      @AussieBlokeProspector  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'day Tony, firstly, my name is not Alan... Not quite sure how you came to that conclusion. Secondly, taking a screen shot comes down to basic computing skills... Something I don't cover in detail as this info is readily available on Google or any number of PC forums. Most PCs and Laptops have this function and can be found out reading the manual. Most image programs like "paint" will accept screen shots... Again... Read the help files on them to find out how to import your screen shot. Regards Aussie

    • @tonyday1989
      @tonyday1989 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan, I'm puzzeled as well as to how I got your name wrong. Apologies extended. It was paint that I initially had trouble getting into from geovic, but all is good now.

    You mentioned that the shallow workings you selected in your example was a good pick because it had a reef nearby. How does a reef mean good shallow leads, and how close does the reef need to be?

    • @AussieBlokeProspector
      @AussieBlokeProspector  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question mate. Shallow Alluvial leads were in most cases a direct
      result of reefs in close proximity shedding and eroding over time. In
      fact, virtually every reef the Old timers found, was found by following
      the alluvial runs to the source. I would say that any ground that has
      alluvial diggings and reef mines within a hundred meters or so of those
      diggings would be a great place to start. Regards Aussie

  • @Maccar81
    @Maccar81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent. Only if i can ask a fairly novice question. What is the difference between a shallow lead and shallow workings? Thanks

    • @AussieBlokeProspector
      @AussieBlokeProspector  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers and excellent question. Shallow workings are indicative of alluvial and or shallow reef gold close to the surface, and as such are commonly found in the vicinity of shallow leads, and often follow such leads in a distinctive line. So a lead is a shallow run of alluvial gold, whereas shallow workings are the result of the mining activities engaged in order to work such leads. Hope that helps. Regards Aussie

    • @Maccar81
      @Maccar81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome. I was just curious because I've been working from some maps by Stephen Barnham and some locations recommended only show up as shallow leads on GeoVic. Actually as I'm writing this i've just popped across to double check what I'm talking about and i've noticed that north of Avoca and Maryborough there is no shallow workings on GeoVic, only shallow leads. I'm guessing thats not right?

    • @AussieBlokeProspector
      @AussieBlokeProspector  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct; whilst Maryborough and other areas where famous for rich Deep leads, there are in fact many locations in those areas where there are shallow workings. For every mine or lead shown on GeoVic, there is usually 10 that aren't. Whilst GeoVic is a fantastic tool, it is not exhaustive and only represents notable or major occurrences and workings. A quick walk on the ground in the vicinity of the shallow leads shown, will reveal where the shallow workings were in those areas. Regards Aussie

    Not sure if this is available to registered users only. But there are options to add GPS Coords to any spot you click on the map, you can also add balloon comments which are easier to see and read, the caveat with the last option is you have to first click on the spot you want, write down the coords, then click to where you want the balloon to be, enter coords and click ok. Bit fiddly but once you get used to it, it's easy

      For every mine, deposit, occurrence and area of workings shown on GeoVic, there are probably 10 that are not. You should have a key on your keyboard that says "prt sc" and one that says " fn".... Most laptops and pc keyboards do..Press both simultaneously and it will put your screen image on the clipboard.

      Strange question to ask considering that this video is exactly about that..with the info in this tutorial you should be able to find a hundred good locations in VIC. Follow my instructions, put in the hard yards, persevere and eventually you will find some. Good Luck

      where you can and can not prospect in north east vic , yacandandera and beach worth , eldorardo area or vic in general some one sead there is exclusion zones around yackandandera

      @AussieBlokeProspector  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Follow the Tutorial and Zoom in on NE VIC. Make sure you add the Crown Lands info as shown in the vid. Generally speaking, most State forest in VIC, you are able to prospect in, and in the case of some national parks you are permitted to prospect. Some local councils, like Yack do have exclusion zones. The onus is up to you to check with local State forest and National Parks offices in each region. Also a good place to check the local Information Centre at each town. Regards
