Putting the game plan in a week ahead of time instead of the week of the game and keeping a tight curfew on Redskins players after they arrived in Los Angeles made them extremely uptight. One reason Super Bowl VIII highlights look rather washed out is that it was a very gray, cloudy and foggy day in Houston. Plus, the game was played on turf, which sort of minimizes colors, as well as having no grass or mud stains on jerseys and the like.

Super Bowl V catches a lot of grief as the "Blunder Bowl", etc., but it was exciting, if frustrating. This one had to be the most boring SB ever other than the few seconds for Mike Bass' pick six of Garo's "pass". Thanks for posting!
Notice how predictable the offensive play-calling was back then. Run on first and second down, then throw on third and long. Griese was considered a tactical genius because he sometimes threw on first down.
If you watch the actual game footage, you'll also notice no men in motion, no changing formations and with just more than a minute remaining and trailing by a touchdown, Washington still has two running backs in the game, including fullback Charlie Harraway. No multiple receiver sets at any time. Much simpler game back then.
Something fishy about that call on the infamous Yupremian blocked field goal. That didn't sound like it was original audio, almost sounded like that was a reconstructed studio call of that play. Very odd
The irony of the outcome was that the Redskins had destroyed the Packers and Cowboys in the NFC, 42-6, while the Dolphins seemed to play only as hard as they needed to defeating the Browns and Steelers, 41-31. The reason why I believe Washington was actually favored over a 16-0 opponent.
That and also the Redskins had played a tougher schedule, by far. The Dolphins played only two teams who would have a winning record by season's end. Also, there was still bias against AFL teams. Jimmy the Greek reportedly said that Miami was still AFL and didn't play the level of competition that Washington had. Lastly, Shula was 0-3 in championship games. 1964 NFL Championship loss to Cleveland (a huge upset) and Super Bowls III and V. So, in retrospect, it is not surprising the Dolphins were underdogs.
Sad that ten years later, none of these Redskins were still around to get revenge against Miami in Super Bowl XVII. Theismann and Riggins hadn't joined Washington yet and Jack Pardee had already been fired as Allen's replacement.
Many of us at the time thought that if the Oakland Raiders won the Immaculate Reception game in Pittsburgh that they would have beaten the Dolphins in the AFC Championship that year. Oakland did end Miami's unbeaten streak the next season and ended their 3 year SB run in the 1974 AFC Divisional.
I agree. Pittsburgh won the Raider game in a once in a lifetime fluke. Raiders would have soundly beaten the Dolphins in the AFC championship...and the Dolphins knew this.
@@76vike19 Just pointing out the fact that luck has to be on your side to go through an undefeated season. This 1972 Dolphin team was not as good as the 1973 team, which was completely dominant. They barely squeaked by in the playoffs and most likely would have lost to a Raider team that was more experienced and had been one of the best teams in football since 1967.
@@jonburrows8602 Speculation , Miami beat the mighty chiefs on their field , then beat defending champion colts 21 - 0 . And sea of hands game we had won , only a fluke throw by a lefty won the game .
1) Damn, 6-2, 250, was considered "massive!" 2) A Bob Griese to Paul Warfield pass is no surprise, except when delivered on first down. My, how times have changed!
What I find funny, is how Dan Marino's #13, and Mark Duper's #85, are both defensive players in this game...Lol. #13 Jake Scott, and #85 Nick Buoniconti.
Correction on Tua"s last name: it's Tagavailoa, not Tagavaloia, as I earlier stated; go back to the old uniforms with the Dolphin wearing a helmet, leaping through the sun; those were so iconic.

How strange that a 17-0 team, the only in history, would win in the playoffs by a pedestrian margin of 17 points in three games, 55-38. Has any other SB champ won by such close margins over three playoff victories?
2001 Patriots won their games by 3, over the Raiders, in a game you might remember, by 7 at Pittsburgh, and by 3 over the Greatest Show on Turf Rams. A grand total of 13 points.
And now we have the Commanders to get excited about, even though a majority of American natives had no problem with Redskins. Got to hand it to white liberal journalists, they sure do know what's good for Indians better than Indians do!
I am not a Miami fan , but I do like the Dolphins . Especially when they got beat down the year before by Dallas only to respond like this . Other teams tank it but look at what they did . They became stronger from defeat .Came back with a vengeance .
I have always hated the Miami Dolphins with a passion. But I give their 1972 team credit for being the best NFL team that ever existed before or since, if you go strictly by their record. To date, no other NFL team has ever had that “perfect season”. Plus, I am an “AFL” guy. That little pipsqueak runt Pat Fischer illegally and intentionally tripped Larry Csonka and got away with it. Otherwise there is no way on earth he would've tackled him without getting steamrolled and flattened like a pancake. A tripping penalty in football occurs when a player deliberately trips a player on the opposing team. This is dangerous as it can cause serious injury. NFL Rulebook: Rule 3, Section 40, “Tripping is the use of the leg or foot to obstruct any opponent (including a runner).” Rule 12, Section 1, Article 8 makes tripping a prohibited act. Watch the play at exactly 6:14 and see how dirty a ballplayer Fischer was.
The Redskins had terrible luck with passes hitting the goalposts. In the 1945 NFL championship game, Sammy Baugh had a pass blown into the goalposts, and it was a safety for the Cleveland Rams. The Rams won 15-14.
Myles JS i heard that but im.not sure if he was too injured to play and allen prefered kilmer ball control mentality not sonny gunslinger even tho he was statistically the best qb of the 60s
What was Garo thinking ?? He should have left the passing to the quarterback. He cost the Dolphins the shutout and came close to costing them the game and their perfect season.
Say what you will, but the '72 Dolphins did something that is unprecedented to this day, IIRC. No, I do not mean being the only undefeated champion. I am talking about their being a 1-1-1-1 team. That is, they were #1 in scoring offense, #1 in scoring defense, #1 in yards gained and #1 in fewest yards allowed. The '84 49ers came close at 2-1-2-1.
The score was deceptive. Miami completely dominated this for the entire 4 quarters. A long bomb TD to Warfield was called back due to a holding penalty. The Skins only hung in because of their excellent defense. Their offense was shut down and out. Their only score came via the stupidest play in Super Bowl history. This game should've been won by at least 14 to 20 points.
@@skymasterson5833 You just said it. Their defense was what made it close. Don't forget the pass from Kilmer that hit the goalpost. That would have been TD. Also, the stupidest play is NOT giving the ball to PROBABLY the best RB in football( Marshawn Lynch) when Seattle is on the 1 or 2 yd line ,3 rd down w / a timeout left as well w/ 15s seconds to go against NEngland. Now what Pete Carrol did was STUPID. He gave NE a Superbowl, they should never have won.
@@Wixom2200 Carroll made the dumbest decision, but Garo's 'play' was the most retarded thing you will ever see on a football field. The Skins had one good drive the entire game. I think they ran only 10 plays on the Miami side of the 50 yard line. Total domination by the Dolphins. It should've been a 20 point blowout.
@@skymasterson5833 The Dolphins were a good team ,thats all. I watched them that yr. The whole AFC ( as usual) was week. One team over .500. ( Dolphins). The rest were horrible! Check the results. Also, the Redskins shut them down. This was the lowest Miami scored against an opponent the whole yr by far. The problem was a poor offensive game plan by Wash. Miami was decent against the run hecause of their LB's. Wash should have been passing heavy the whole game to take Miami Linebackers from defensive line pressure. They could have won this game provided they passed more. You have to look at the whole season and the playoffs.
@@Wixom2200 The AFC was what??? 3 teams won 10 games in a 14 game sched, and 2 others won 8, the NFC had three 10 win teams also, and three 8 win teams. That is plenty balanced. The Dolphins were not a "good" team, they were a great team. Number 1 in points, points allowed, Number 1 in yards gained AND allowed. A grand slam of #1 rankings that will NEVER be duplicated. Never. Now, the Dolphins schedule, thats another story. They played one of the 10 worst schedules in history that year. You can say the Dolphins were a product of their weak schedule, that they took advantage. Well, they did. You can't answer for the quality of your opponents, you can only play who they put in front of you. The impressive thing is, Miami went unbeaten with their starting QB hurt for the last 9 games of the regular season; 64% of the schedule. I dont care who you play, that is an enormously difficult task to pull off. The AFC started a run of 5 straight Super Sunday victories with this season, and eventually 8 out of 9. Thats the opposite of weak. The NFC was the pushover for the entire decade of the 70's.
Also note: 6'-4" 250lb. All Pro Guard Ray Schoenke DID NOT PLAY (Bad Knee). Had Ray played, I'm sure Manny Fernandez wouldn't have had such a field day as he did. Sonny Jurgensen wasn't even allowed on the sideline during the game and was in a press box by himself. Not even allowed to communicate with Kilmer during the game. Terrible decision by George Allen! Cost him the game. SAD! Gotta hand it to the Dolphins though.....They beat the Skins Fair & Square!
You sure about Schoenke being "All-Pro"? According to Pro Football Reference Schoenke, is not credited with either being All Pro or Pro Bowl. They use a * for a Pro Bowl Season and a + for first team All Pro and I don't see any for him. Betting Manny would have handled him.
Schoenke was not injured. He was dressed and was an offensive lineman on both of Curt Knight's attempts (You can see him facing the camera during the pep talk prior to starting the second half as well as blocking on the missed field goal at 13:19 - #62). He said the reason he didn't play - and had asked to be traded - was his political beliefs. Schoenke was a Democrat and vocal George McGovern supporter during the 1972 election, while George Allen was clearly a Richard Nixon supporter - "Nixon with a whistle." Allen even told Schoenke that his support of McGovern made him unfaithful to the president. Kind of how Allen insisted that the Washington media continually print only supportive articles about the team instead of printing facts - whether positive or negative. Schoenke played in 12 games that year - starting none - after starting 27 of the previous 28 under Allen. However, he was never All Pro.
Miami's undefeated record will still regin no one will take the dolphins crown of undefeated team of the world new england almost but lost against the new york giants
I wonder if it would have made a difference if George Allen had put Sonny Jurgensen in during the 2nd half to boost the offense? Miami's D looked awful tough that day, so maybe not so much.
1972 Fins were the best of all time. To lose 14-7 to them....is alright. The Skins had a great season. But the Skins had Herb Mulkey on the bench......Larry Brown legs were spent........ If they went with Mulkey it would have been a better game. The dolphins had a running game...the skins didn't.
Brown didn't really have a bad game: 72 yards rushing on 22 carries isn't being shut down. It is Kilmer that they really shut down: 14 of 28, 104 yards, 0 TD's and 3 Int's
Herb Hulkey was decent but wasn't a back like Larry Brown, give the Dolphins credit their defense took away the run also they caught a few lucky breaks i.e. the missed TD pass to Charley Taylor and the ball hitting the goal post on a wide open Jerry Smith
Seriously? You're suggesting Washington would have fared better if a running back picked up from an open tryout had played in place of the league's MVP? Miami knew the Redskins' game plan was centered on the running game. Charley Taylor said during the week that he might not even have to catch a pass to win if the running game was working like they believed it could. When this was shut down, it forced Kilmer to throw too often and it was his three disastrous intercepts that were the difference, not Herb Mul-key not playing on offense.

PSXGAMER I missed these old games. I don't see Super Bowl 2, but I hope you get more old games from the 70's 80 's & 90's
Facenda didn't narrate the Super Bowl II film
the next season 22-23 will be the 50th Anniversary of the Miami Dolphins perfect season
Unfortunately Don Shula won't be here for it
Roy Jefferson was great everywhere he played but he was always traded because he was a strong locker room presence...a union guy.
They should bring back John Facenda's voice via AI to narrate today's Super Bowl highlight shows.
Something fishy about that call on the infamous Yupremian blocked field goal. That didn't sound like it was original audio, almost sounded like that was a reconstructed studio call of that play. Very odd
Perfection is perfection anything less..get a cigar

@ 15:39 Larry Brown catching that pass and running doesn't get any better than that. Still gives me goosebumps.

The “1” and the “7” on Kilmer’s jersey….both the front/back and the sleeves…were sewn on WAY too far apart, as you can see at 20:48.

Manny Fernandez ate Len Hause’s lunch all day!
Sad that ten years later, none of these Redskins were still around to get revenge against Miami in Super Bowl XVII. Theismann and Riggins hadn't joined Washington yet and Jack Pardee had already been fired as Allen's replacement.
The Miami Dolphins are the only team in NFL history to complete an undefeated perfect season of 17-0 to win their first Super Bowl title.
Yup
Aaaand Washington became League fodder once again 30 years later... Because Leadership...

How ironic that the final score would have been 17-0 if Garo made that field goal.
Destiny can bite you right in the ass
Many of us at the time thought that if the Oakland Raiders won the Immaculate Reception game in Pittsburgh that they would have beaten the Dolphins in the AFC Championship that year. Oakland did end Miami's unbeaten streak the next season and ended their 3 year SB run in the 1974 AFC Divisional.
I agree. Pittsburgh won the Raider game in a once in a lifetime fluke. Raiders would have soundly beaten the Dolphins in the AFC championship...and the Dolphins knew this.
Woulda cloulda shoulda don’t put rings on da fingas
@@76vike19 Just pointing out the fact that luck has to be on your side to go through an undefeated season. This 1972 Dolphin team was not as good as the 1973 team, which was completely dominant. They barely squeaked by in the playoffs and most likely would have lost to a Raider team that was more experienced and had been one of the best teams in football since 1967.
@@jonburrows8602 Speculation , Miami beat the mighty chiefs on their field , then beat defending champion colts 21 - 0 . And sea of hands game we had won , only a fluke throw by a lefty won the game .
@@mr.majestic2667 Of course it's speculation, Captain Obvious!
I think George Allen wore his team out with that 30 minutes to live speech
They were them for like 2 or 3 games a season
Almost 50 years ago. I'am 56. Where does the time go?
When this game was played I was 18, now 69 time marches on
How can I find the music soundtrack for this particular super bowl?
Yes.. I am also looking for it.. It used to be here on ut00be .. the complete Vickers, Lisio, Spence etc..( complete ).. but now its only in sections and not all there..??
Another trick of the Gods!
Any players from both teams around for the rematch in 82? Kuechenberg?
Vern Den Herder, yes Kuechenberg
Today marks the 50th anniversary of Super Bowl 7!
Yes it's does.. I'm watching it too.. then I'm going to watch the entire game on dvd.. So epic!
12:46 - Dan Marino playing in 72's Dolphins
11 years away
What the hell does Dan Marino have to do with the 1972 Dolphins 🐬
And now we have the Commanders to get excited about, even though a majority of American natives had no problem with Redskins. Got to hand it to white liberal journalists, they sure do know what's good for Indians better than Indians do!
It still the only perfect season....
I am not a Miami fan , but I do like the Dolphins . Especially when they got beat down the year before by Dallas only to respond like this . Other teams tank it but look at what they did . They became stronger from defeat .Came back with a vengeance .
Thanks to those New York Giants stopping the Patriots .
And also thanks to The Dolphins stopping the unbeaten Chicago bears in The Orange Bowl Stadium .
6:30 SONG?
My Dad was at this game.
It's sad how Allen's pettiness and spite toward Jurgensen might have cost the Skins the SB. Ego can be a self-destructive thing.
Still think it was a crock of shit how Bill Kilmer's potential TD pass was killed by the stupid goal post! Thank god they moved the goals back!
Football gods said no way .
The Redskins had terrible luck with passes hitting the goalposts. In the 1945 NFL championship game, Sammy Baugh had a pass blown into the goalposts, and it was a safety for the Cleveland Rams. The Rams won 15-14.
The Football Gods can be mean look at the Fog Bowl in Chicago on New Years Eve 1988
“Seek out Larry Brown and punish him”
PERFECTION... A great job by Shula, but I wonder what would have happened had Sonny Jurgensen played... Might have been a little different.
Keep in mind that Griese missed most of the season, and was rusty going into Super Bowl 7.
Myles JS
Yup. Earl Morrall relieved Griese in week 5 after Griese broke his foot.
William Cooper why didnt jurgerson play? as a skins fan i never got a straight answer
Lil_Tex Wasn't he injured at the time?
Myles JS i heard that but im.not sure if he was too injured to play and allen prefered kilmer ball control mentality not sonny gunslinger even tho he was statistically the best qb of the 60s
Guess the fake play-by-play was written by Steve Sabol?
What was Garo thinking ?? He should have left the passing to the quarterback. He cost the Dolphins the shutout and came close to costing them the game and their perfect season.

18:17 Damn!
I watched this game live. This really was a close game.
Had Ray played, I'm sure Manny Fernandez wouldn't have had such a field day
as he did. Sonny Jurgensen wasn't even allowed on the sideline during the game
and was in a press box by himself. Not even allowed to communicate with Kilmer
during the game.
Only two teams Miami played in the regular season had winning records
@@ozzieray irrelevant. They did what they were supposed to do against every opponent in spite of their losing record: WIN!
They should raise a toast to Eli Manning David Tyree and Plaxico Burress of the Giants
I wonder if it would have made a difference if George Allen had put Sonny Jurgensen in during the 2nd half to boost the offense? Miami's D looked awful tough that day, so maybe not so much.
Jurgensen was in the press box and didn’t dress.
Jurgensen tore his Achilles tendon earlier in the season. It most certainly would've been a more competitive game if he was able to play.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILLY KILMER (9/6/2024). 85 Today
Damn goalpost
1972 Fins were the best of all time. To lose 14-7 to them....is alright. The Skins had a great season. But the Skins had Herb Mulkey on the bench......Larry Brown legs were spent........ If they went with Mulkey it would have been a better game. The dolphins had a running game...the skins didn't.
Brown didn't really have a bad game: 72 yards rushing on 22 carries isn't being shut down. It is Kilmer that they really shut down: 14 of 28, 104 yards, 0 TD's and 3 Int's
Larry Brown was a million times better that's why even if his legs were spent
@@underwriter100 Correct. If Kilmer has a decent game. Wash could have one. They shut Miami down. Miami's lowest scoring all yr.
