You are correct they need to stay independent for as long as they can , good thing is with the rise of social media the music scene is opening up to independent bands and individuals who are getting ahead without the music corporations having total control of their careers, its also happening with the publishing , movie , TV and the newspaper industries, and its great to see . If they can produce this quality product in their basement without all the usual hangers-on the sky's The limit , and you are also correct the NIRVANA die-hard fans would have to love this for the sheer talent and want to see what else Liliac can bring to the table . It's been said that the plan is to do fewer covers, and focus more on the new music, but you're right that the covers get them noticed by fans of the originals. I hope they continue with an occasional cover as well.

Why is he playing acoustic guitar during an electric guitar solo?

That is an electric/acoustic with likely a piezeo mounted pick up. You can clearly see he is plugged in.He hits a distortion pedal for the solo.
