    I met Hugh in 2005 when he came to my Jazz Improvisations class at NYU. I love him and his music to this day. I'm Bulgarian, I'm not supposed to feel so connected to it, but still, every time I hear him performing Stimela, I go to pieces. Special. I'm going to miss Hugh Masekela.

    I wouldn't have known anything about Hugh Masakela only for a boyfriend of mine in the late 90's. We'd like in bed I. The dark listening to this genius. Unfortunately my ex boyfriend passed away yesterday and I am here drinking a brandy, crying but happy to have experienced Hugh with him

    I discovered Hugh Masekela’s music around 1974 with his album “I am not Afraid”. I was blown away by the music; every track was a gem creating these stories within my mind’s eye. The raw emotion that is expressed in this concert version is amazing. I would have loved to see this in a live performance
    The world lost a master musician at his passing. May your memory be eternal Hugh Masekela! 🙏🙏🙏

      To me its too emotional because the artists today they all about fame and possession nothing about lifting each other. I use to go to his club In Yeoville to get whipped by him when I was doing something wrong like to be there after hours. What a great man indeed. I miss him...😭😭😭😭

    I'm by no means an emotional man. But, this song...it's presentation...it's meaningful performance just tugs at me. I cannot help but think of the gravity our ancestors endured for the numbers of years they were forced to endured it. Hugh Masekela, thank you, sir, for honoring these brave men through song. May they be blessed mightily. Hugh Masekela, may God rest your soul.

    this music evoke the spirit of African people from different parts of African continent. African people brought in this country whose wealth was robbed and forcefully taken away by White people during the colonial era. African people having nothing in their hands trained to toil in the mines , leaving their love ones back home , parents , families with no one to protect. Flocked in the coal train and their homes in the world of oblivion.

      There is a 16 minute version that was banded in the US around 1990. A Richmond, VA jazz station announced that, this was the "last time" they would play this particular version of "Stimula" because it was band in the USA and asked us to get our devices ready to record it. I did. I let my neighbor borrow it and never heard it again. I have since heard 16 minute versions, but they were "Not" the same. It is a rare live recording..... I awake daily to that song for a full year.... before I loaded it out. I know every note, beat and inflections. I would love to hear it again.

    • @gerry2294
      @gerry2294 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That explains why the video editing is out of sync with what's actually happening. For instance, the opening instrumental is a saxophone solo, then Hugh on trumpet - that's not on this video. Also when he's singing it's clear it's not on this version of the song. It's good hear anyhow :)

    專輯中最後一曲 Stimela 煤礦車 全曲長十分鐘,內分為四段。第一段以敲擊樂器與口技具體而微地模仿出蒸汽火車的各種聲音,並以歷盡滄桑的嗓音述說從非洲中南部各國的火車所載運而來的許多黑人礦工;第二段是薩克斯風演奏,有怨無處訴地幽怨哀嘆,像是被命運無情地擺弄的自己,除了無奈,還是無奈;第三段是小喇叭的獨白,似乎在暗無天日的恐怖威脅與聲聲無奈當中,虔誠地期盼著慈悲的曙光降臨,期盼著僥倖地逃過劫難;第四段則是以某種土語唱出一連串充滿著氣衝山河的悲憤情緒,以火車當作發洩對象,就算聽不懂土語的內容,卻依然可以深刻感受到語氣中透露出的不滿與憤怒,壓抑已久的內心衝擊按捺不住,一觸即發地宣洩而出,最終引發隨之共鳴的沸騰激情,有如火山爆發、排山倒海席捲而來,讓人來不及應付決堤的情緒。
    情緒隨著樂曲脈動不斷地澎湃起伏,終至邁入高潮迭起階段,其中各種真實無比的樂聲一一湧現,包括綿密襲來的鼓聲、無限幽怨的和聲、富含光澤的薩克斯風與小喇叭演奏、主唱者的口白、歌聲與吶喊等歷歷在目,讓聆聽者宛如親身經歷一場色彩繽紛的非洲音樂現場表演。千言萬語、此情此景須問天的非洲黑人悲壯史詩,用一首歌把所有的委屈與哀怨以極盡滄桑的嗓音表露無遺,強烈地震撼著聆聽者的心弦,久久無法平息。
