Completely agree on the JLC price hikes. I wanted to buy JLC Reverso but I don’t want to be the sucker paying 40% over what it was not so long ago.
Completely agree. I’m in the exact same situation and mindset. They wanted 8k, I was willing to give them 8k. Now they want 12k? They’re gonna get 0. It’s that simple.
They’ve priced themselves right out of the market
JLC is shooting themselves in the foot. You can buy a preowned Reverso in the secondary market for not much more than what it was 12 months ago but if you were to buy new and pay retail price you would pay a whole lot more than last year. That just means the secondary market prices aren't supporting the retail price hikes.

Today, feeling whimsical I jumped on to the JLC site to see that a simple steel mono was now almost £10k - it was £5,150 2 years ago!

Agreed. Looking at you, Grand Seiko. Also, it's more the clasps that are the problem than the bracelets. Lack of tool-free microadjustment in anything over $500 is unacceptable IMO.

One of London’s most respected watch dealers is David Duggan at. Burlington Arcade. I was in there buying a Milgauss. He had a John Mayer in the window and he said in passing he had no idea why people called it that “People come in asking to see the John Mayer and I know now it’s that one, but I don’t know who he is or why it’s called that”
Paul Newman was a world renowned actor. John Mayer is barely a blip on the radar outside America.

Great talk! My only comment is, Paul Newman was kind of the Tom Cruise of his time with more cool and less crazy factor. I don't think John Mayer is even the Ed Sheeran of his time musically. He is known for watches but I don't think anyone is trying to buy into the Mystique of John Mayer when they buy a Rolex. I'm not gonna buy a Rolex and throw on "Your Body is a Wonderland" on my car radio. Jay Z who you've talked about probably has that wider relevance culturally.

Slight criticism with the new setup. With the old setup you both were looking forward towards the camera making it more like you both were talking to the audience. This setup you are spaced further apart looking and talking to each other.

You finally reorganized those mic stands! The old setup looked like a wall was set up and too intrusive. Always great to hear from you two.
The new setup is hard to watch as the background doesn't blend into the surrounding environment. If you go for warm tones background then go full warm tones, if you go full cold tones then go full cold tones, don't go for 80% warm tones and 20% cold tones. If you like the contrast then go for 50-50. The space between both of the speakers are too spread out while having casual talk; that space setting is only work for news setting and politic debate setting.

Personal opinion:
I would never ever see art as an investment opportunity (masterworks).
It’s highly volatile, extremely subjective, depending on trends and individual’s preferences.
Actually most art pieces are only sold once. At auctions the majority doesn’t get sold at all.
Contrary to things like gold etc. every art piece has to find THAT one person, who absolutely wants it (which can take decades).

also, it reduces art from something that is enjoyed down to something that makes money. To a speculative investment. It’s antithetical to the very idea of art itself

And one should not forget, that (in this case) you don’t actually own a part of the art piece. They create a LLC for each piece, you then own shares. So you can’t even see/enjoy it.
In addition there’s a yearly fee + 20% sales commission. Do the math…

John is dying to attain icon status, I think. He comes across very cool & humble on first instances, then when you follow him closer over years you realize that's a highly intelligent person with a strong narcissistic vein. Nothing wrong with that per se and I respect his music. But he introduced the world to the Daytona that would later get his name attached to in a very different way compared to Newman.

Name one Mayer song… I’m a rock guy and know he plays guitar great guitar but his music is pop for chicks. He’s known by us for watches. Not sure about the longevity of this hype. It depends if Hodinkee sinks or not…
Agree 100%. I said in a separate comment that he hasn’t been musically relevant for more than 10 years. He’s a much bigger deal in the watch world than in the music world at this point.

I remember i accidentally bought a Universal Geneve while drunk once . I thought it was a steal . When it landed it was genuine but it was a ladies watch and the size of a grain of rice . I have followed Theo and Harris from the start . And at the time I think Christian was still doing videos in the back of his Car lol . I message him . He said he would sell it . I posted it from Ireland to Christian and he sold it in 2 days . 👌🏽👌🏽

It’s a good thing John Mayer is not obsessed with fame. He has not been musically relevant for more than 10 years.
As someone who doesn't live in a major metro area, when I go to one it feels like there has just been a money firehose that someone turned on, and none of it makes any sense or is worth it. I remember never buying stuff in Europe if I could get it in the USA because it was much cheaper to buy the same stuff in the US. Now I save my shopping for when I am in Germany as it is much cheaper.
If you buy a watch to wear, and maybe leave to your kids, none of this “brand trajectory” stuff matters.

I love your podcast guys and I understand anything with Rolex in the titles gets clicks……but OMG I’m so sick of hearing about Rolex. I think one of the reasons people are being turned off the brand is because every you tube watch channel is always banging on about them. They are great watches I have owned 7 of them but…..I think we the watch community are craving channels to stop using Rolex to get views. They should be in the mix but not THE Mix.
The reason they talk about Rolex so much is because the PEOPLE get what they want people want. These watch guys wouldn’t be hitting it so hard if it didn’t get the clicks.

I respect the purists perspective of what is timeless and what makes a timepiece timeless from a design perspective. But I would push back on a specific item, what makes a watch “timeless”.
The design of a watch can be timeless, A Reverso, the Submariner, the Cartier Santos or Tank. But the dial can completely date the when of that watch or a change in case dimensions.
The Paul Newman exotic dial Daytona is a product of the space age, with fonts that were very evocative of the time and where we thought we were going as a species as we pursued landing on the Moon.
The John Mayer Daytona is totally a product of the mid Aughts to 2010s. Only time will tell if the JM is felt to be a classic, though I would agree that it will retain and increase in value.
Now as for the Music Edition ROO. For me the classic Genta shape is a timeless design, the Clou De Paris dial is classic. What I find so fascinating about this specific ROO is the whimsy of the dial color way and how it mimics an equalizer. So totally a Royal Oak Offshore and so totally different from the vast majority of the RO and ROO collection. The dial is much more dynamic in person than the stock photo you used.

Innovation? What I'd like to see would be someone coming out with a watch with a bezel and a dial with the quality of ceramic and enamel BUT that you can also adjust and change the colors from an app. Want a green bezel today? No problem. Want to go smurf today? No problem. And on and on. May sound a bit gimmicky, but whoever manages to make this will get a lot of attention.

The thing with AP to me is that the Royal oak is a classic model, the jumbo will be cool and a classic for a long long time to come,as well as the chrono as perp calendars, some of the offshores as well, but that being said they do make some stuff that will die hard and they have too many iteration and anything outside the royal oak just pretty much sucks.
Can't wait till the holy trinity companies start making Quartz watches and calling it the most innovative watch they ever made.

I don’t understand your point; you just mentioned that you want Patek to come up with an affordable watch and yet when VC has done it you say it’s not culturally important; I don’t even know what that means; VC did it as an entry level to their collection which I commend them for doing that (btw I don’t own any VC)

I'm sorry but these gold Daytonas are just not practical. I tried a full gold one recently at an AD. Heavy . So damn heavy... and you have to be pretty much a massive peacock to wear one. Horrible. I just don't get the obsession. I'd take a 36mm OP or datejust over these ANY DAY
I disagree that the reason Rolex is so famous isn't because they work hard to make their watches better every year. I think it is a big part of it. If they made watches the same way they did 20 years they would be much less successful.

problem with Rolex is I would want the watch for a milestone occasion but I'm stuck only able to get one if I get a call from the AD....so what do I buy it and store it until the day comes? might as well just flip the thing for free money and forget about rolex

I am not sure what you mean by it "not being a good time" to buy a Rolex? Are you suggesting one will never "profit" from them again as was possible since mid-2020 (agreed), or are you suggesting that the market is going to continue to correct and one should wait? I think I would agree prices across the full model line will continue their downward trend (albeit slowly), except for the GMTs and Daytonas which I pretty much subscribe to the belief that buying today will always be better than buying tomorrow.
Also, the comment on AP is 100% true - That brand is not trending in the right direction, and their abhorrent treatment of "customers" over the past 3 years has burned not only many of their long time fans, but most people have simply moved on. RO's, almost across the full line, are headed to MSRP or below unless we're talking ceramic or skeletons. Want proof? Try and sell one to a dealer...

On there being no more groundbreaking innovation anymore: have the likes of Rolex and Omega given up on the battle to create the thinnest watches? Omega became a chunkster after introducing co-axial but I would love to see the next Seamaster 300m be around 11mm thick. Slimness always amazes me.
