- “The tragedy of Mussorgsky’s death was epitomized by Repin in a canvas that provokes today almost as great a response as it did in the hushed days following the composer’s death in March 1881. For a long time Mussorgsky had sought escape from various emotional problems through alcohol. In his later years he had taken to wandering for days about the capital, and turning up unaccountably ragged and penniless at the homes of friends and mere acquaintances. Finally, as a former military cadet, he had been sent to the psychiatric division of the Nikolaevsky military hospital in Saint Petersburg. Informed by Stasov of their old friend’s condition, Repin hastened to the hospital and on March 2nd started to paint the composer’s portrait. As if having a premonition of the musician’s death, Repin managed to complete Mussorgsky’s portrait in four sittings, between March 2 and 5. It emerged a masterpiece in the history of portraiture. It is an arresting portrait of an alcoholic in whom degeneracy is somehow blended with goodness and simplicity with genius.”

The best portrait demonstration that I have seen yet. Color mixing, brush strokes detailing . Thank you so much for sharing your experience and talent.😍
Thank you! Very happy you enjoyed it.
Mussorgsky was in a hospital days before he died when the portrait was painted. He was suffering from alcoholism hence the strange facial expression and untidy look. This is not a portrait demonstration, it’s a colour study for a master copy.
Fantastic! Really lovely style. So helpful to see brushes strokes and values and colour going on so close up. Thanks you so much.
Thank you so much!
As always, excellent, beautiful, amazing, wowzer! A REAL Master living now. Thanks so much for sharing. Can't thank you enough. Your channel is/videos are exactly what I needed. Sam

Thank you Cristian!
Ilya Repin was an amazing painter. Often considered Russia’s favorite realist painter, Repin painted Tolstoy barefoot and full length as well as the famous “Zaphorizhia Cossacks Write a Mocking Letter” and “They Were Not Expecting Him” where the portrait of poet Taras Shevchenko hangs on the wall. Repin was born in Chugeuv, Ukraine.
Ilya Efimovich Repin was born in Malorossia. That time Ukraine as a country was NOT existed at all. He was and is and will be Russian painter forever. He graduated Fine Art Academy in Saint Petersburg. As he was a really brilliant student he got the opportunity to continue his study at Paris where he spent some years and then he returned back to Russia and only after that he became famous Russian painter..
@@aik207Ivan, go to sleep, he is Ukrainian artist! ✌️✊🇺🇦🕊️
Repin was born in the Russian Empire to Cossack family. Repin was a Russian painter. Read his autobiography “Далёкое близкое» and you will learn a lot about true Ukrainian history.
@@Serg_Bro😂🤣😂
@@nataliazorinliu Look at Repin's paintings "Cossacks" and "Barge Haulers", in the painting "We Didn't Expect" there is a portrait of Shevchenko on the wall! The Russian Empire occupied Ukrainian lands, and Repin was born in the Kharkov region into a family of Ukrainian Cossacks, not Kuban!
This one video explains all lessons in paintings. Thank you so much ❤❤❤

Thanks Leonidas:)
You are a great master artists sir
You are too kind sir:)
Your past videos have inspired me to do more master studies. I try to one every other week. I have a question. Do you always print the picture you are working from, or do you paint from a computer or tablet screen?
@Handotr, I prefer a printed source image but end up using a screen image when that’s not possible. If I could copy in a museum directly from a painting that would be the dream of course but getting permission can be difficult 😅
Beautiful work!! 👋👋

Always wonderful to watch, fantastic painting. May enquire what brush you are using? Looks like a Kandinsky and a small size one. And mediums you use please? All the best from Tokyo. James
Thanks James:)
The small brushes are nylon (Raphael and Princeton)and the larger brushes are natural bristle. Medium is just linseed oil.
