Hey all. To anyone having issues with the health sync between D&D Beyond and roll20. I have found some information on the issue. Okay, let's get started. The extension, Beyond20, is working fine (as of 08/21/24). The issue is with Roll20. The extension uses API code calls from the two sites. One is to get data about your roles from D&D Beyond. And one to send the data to Roll20. But Roll20 has some endpoints locked behind a paid 'pro' account for $9/month. One of these is the Character Sheet API endpoints. This means that the extension can NOT send data to Roll20 about your health. If you are paying for Roll20 'Pro,' this video still works; if not, this part is unavailable. You can read more on Roll20's wiki page, "Building Character Sheets," which lists the following: "This is the main article on how to create or edit Custom Character Sheet for Roll20. You need to be a Pro-user to access this feature." TLDR: You must pay Roll20 $9/month for the health bar to auto-update. Thank you for reading. I hope this clears up some issues you may be having.
Is it just me or is there absolutely nothing in this video about actually importing your character into roll20? Just using your Beyond character sheet to control roll20? Even though it says "import" in the video title?
You are importing the data from your DnDBeyond charactersheet into Roll20 each time you use your DnDBeyond charactersheet. If you want your Roll20 charactersheet to be filled out, you will need to grab the .json data of your character from DnDBeyond (This is not really supported but possible) and then the GM will need to import it (using a script you can find online) each time your sheet updates. This becomes a bit impractical after about the first time the entire party needs to be updated.
@@Klastic It is more practical then having to deal with the situations that beyond20 doesnt do well. I love beyond 20 and it is great as a DM for monster sheets however as a player I have a lot of situations like smite/ eldrich smite or multiple damage sources (booming blade, hex, hunters mark, rage, divine favor, gloomstalker extra damage, you get the point). Beyond20 just doesant support those. At best, you roll the attack then use the dice roller to roll the other dice separate but haveing an actual R20 character sheet integrates it all and makes it automatic. Ill take a little bit on inconvenience every 4-5 sessions over a little bit of inconvenience every time I make an attack.
It might be a bit much to explain in a reply but I will give it a shot. Go to the sheet you want the data from on DnDBeyond. In Chrome hit (F12) to open dev tools. Select the Network tab at the top. Once selected hit (Ctrl + R) to reload the page. You should see data populate. In the upper left hand corner there is a search box. Type in your Character ID (It can be found in the URL at the top of the dev tools box) to filter the data. Click on the name field to order the data until your id is at the top. There will portably be 3 of them. Click on each one until you find the JSON data in the response tab. Hopefully that will help.
This video overlooks a crucial step. While following instructions in the video, when I try to "Save Changes" after adding the token and typing in the correct character name from DND Beyond, Roll20 hits me with the choices: Use the Charactermancer, Create an NPC, Edit Sheet Directly. This video does not include that and no matter which selection I make it will not import my D&D Beyond character. Trying to find any up to date info on how these apps integrate is extremely frustrating.
You used to be able to run a script but DnDBeyond changed some things up and made it really hard to do for the avg person. Granted you had to re-run it ever time your sheet updates. This is the best stop gap imo.
@@Klastic In case anyone is reading this in the future with the same question, typically what we do is have the DM make a game on DnD Beyond purely to host the player's character sheets. That way the DM can see all your backstory, which they wouldn't be able to do if you just shared your sheet with them. Then, the DM makes the game on Roll20 as the VTT and you set it up as described in this video.
is there a way to have all of the stats etc (so the entire sheet values and so on) from the DnD Beyond sheet be added into the Roll20 one and kept up to date automatically? That'd be glorious.

I'm having an issue with the HP working like some of the other folks below. So for the Roll20 side I have only the free use going, incase that is pertinent. I've followed the instructions, everything is named exactly, however when updating HP on D&D Beyond the HP on the token in Roll20 does not update. All the Beyond 20 settings should allow it. I am logged in as a GM, but I don't think this should matter as I just got down being in a game as a player with this same character and there were no issues on the other GM's end with getting things to sync up. Is there a requirement/limitation on Beyond 20 that to sync HP you, as a GM, have to have a subscription?
There should not be any limitations, this video was created using the free version of Roll20. I would suggest making sure you have HP selected as bar 1 on the Token th-cam.com/video/y01JkM88NN0/w-d-xo.html and that the name of your character sheet and DnDBeyond character are the same. After change the HP in Roll 20 once (can be any random number) and then update your health in DnDBeyond and it should update.
Oh man, this is great. Just started getting into D&D, I was getting really frustrated with the roll20 character sheet. I bought some books on DNDB but I can't use any of it with roll20's character creator.
Great video. Quick question though; When I roll in DnD Beyond, the site rolls twice (Damage dice) and adds them together, and sends the information to Roll 20. He doesnt have critical or anything
I am using the free version of both roll20 and DnDBeyond for this video. It works for both players and DMs and there is an option for rolls to only be shown to the DM. I suggest giving the settings section a read to see what all you can do with it.
In Roll20 when you're in a game if you go into the settings menu you can select "enable 3D dice" and it will let you roll it, if you also select to do it automatically it will just roll the animation when you click it.
Great video! If we are using the Encounter builder from DnD Beyond, how can we also import those monsters inside roll20? It would be cool if you could do a video on that.
Ask your DM to name your Token the same as your DnDBeyond Character sheet for linking of health. Rolls should work from DnDBeyond to Roll 20 once the extension is installed without the step above.
It does trigger the roll in roll20 if you turn off DnDBeyond rolls. Not sure why they would be against it if it makes it easier on the players but some folks are stuck in their ways and or don't fully understand how it works.
How does he split the screen so perfectly to view both Roll20 and the Dnd beyond character sheet at once? Is it just editing for the video, or he actually can view all of that on his screen at once? If so, how?
I'm not getting a dropdown box next to the bars when I double click on my token. I can manually enter values, but now drop down boxes. Any ideas? Would love to have HP auto-update as I change my dndbeyond character sheet. Yes, I have the beyond20 extension installed.
You will have to create their sheet and give them permission to make the changes to health display. The rest will populate when the player uses the extension to roll / display info in roll 20 as long as the character’s name is an exact match in both roll 20 and DnDBeyond.
Should editing your HP on roll20 (-damage + enter) in your red bubble change it on your dndbeyond sheet, and healing on your dndbeyond sheet (clicking long rest or editing your HP manually) change what shows on roll20?
You can only update the health from DnDBeyond to Roll20. So updating health in roll20 will not reflect in DnDBeyond. Updating health or long resting in DnDBeyond will update Roll20. For others reading this comment, we used the green bubble (bar 1) in roll20 as an example instead of the red one (bar 3).
Cool story bro, but could you rename the video so that it doesn't have Import in the title. There is no importing of the Character Sheet from BeyondDND. You could rename it to Integrating rolls from BeyondDND to Roll20. That would be more accurate.
Sorry for the delayed reply. You do not need to be in a DnDBeyond campaign per say, though I assume most folks will be in one. You only need a character sheet created in DnDBeyond and be in a game in roll 20. Once those two things are done, you can use your DnDBeyond character sheet to perform rolls and track your info. The other setup in the video is for health, which in my experience isn't really needed, but a nice to have. Hope that helps!
While the game is launched and Beyond 20 is installed, your Beyond 20 settings button should be in the bottom right of your chat box, next to your send button.
The init setup of the tokens will need to be done by a GM. Once the token is created, under the players control, and has the same name as mentioned in the video, the player can then use their DnDBeyond character sheet to roll.
@@Klastic Thanks for the reply! Much appreciated! I have created my own token for the characters, so how would I get that into my DMs hands? I want to play Adventurer's League one-shots which is always people I don't know, and likely don't want me to have their email address. :)
Each player that wants to use it would need to download it. There are no dependencies on the GM needing it as all of the rolls are displayed in Roll 20.
Sadly, this is a misleading title, because this does NOT import your character sheet to roll20 but instead sends your rolls from D&D Beyond to the virtual table in roll20.
Nice tutorial! Thanks for this one! Anyway I don't know if that's just me but could you please next time speak juuust little bit slower :D it is very hard to concentrate and it seems like my head will be blown off :D too much speed)). I think most of people wouldn't mind if the video is 1 minute longer .) But as I said I apprecite your work!!! Thanks.
Np and appreciate the feedback! Based on my analytics over the years I tend to get a better retention rate speaking as I did in this video than I do when I speak slower. Folks will drop off quick if they feel the video isn't getting to the content they want quick enough imo. This helps with that. Also a friendly reminder that you can slow down the speed of video in the overlay settings.
Not working for me. It isn't importing the information from DnD Beyond at all. Rolls aren't porting over, nor is the character sheet information. Update: The problem ended up being that I wasn't clicking on the right part of DnD Beyond to make it appear in Roll 20. The Beyond20 dice are kind of buried in DnD Beyond. You don't end up clicking on the same icon you would just to have the virtual dice roll. I was able to find the answer in someone else's video that showed more detail.
This is intended to be a quick look at the tool and how to use it and not a in-depth guide. In this video I do cover where to roll, however I believe they have updated the interface a bit since the making of this video. I am glad you were able to find the answer you were looking for.
Same for me but then I only have free versions of both accounts so I suspect that's why I don't even have the menu, let alone the Import :P I loved the extension in Beyond anyway just so I can roll stuff there.
To me that feels like a mixed question. Instead how about, Every character that has DnDBeyond character sheet, needs to have a counter part in Roll20. Each PC that you want to be able to use one of those linked character sheets needs to have the plugin and both Roll20 and DnDBeyond loaded. So all three parts are needed on each PC that you want to use.
@@bgreaud I’m not sure how it would be a mixed question but since no one answered my question I got my party to test it for me. For future reference each player needs to download the extension, the GM cannot link the sheets for them.
@@FirstPersonReview13 that's correct, every character needs its own sheet and Roll20 copy of that character to match up to. I'm glad that you guys were able to get it running.
If you are wanting your character sheet copied over, no it does not do that. It does however import your rolls and other information from your DnDBeyond character sheet into roll 20 as needed.
I love the information, but man, having to pause constantly because you are talking so fast. Not trying to be too critical but just wanted to say something.
That is the intendent way to watch my videos. Watch through once to get a general idea of what is going on. Then watch again and pause as needed or use the settings in TH-cam to slow the video down.
Sorry but apart from not being able to keep up with you as you speed through this video, there seems to be a number of assumptions that us mere mortals understand what you are both doing and talking about.
A friendly reminder that there are options to slow down video, along with being able to watch as many times as needed. The assumptions that are made are that you already have a basic understand of how to use Roll 20(or have a GM who knows) and DnDBeyond.
Feel free to slow the video down if needed. You must be the owner of the game in order to set who can controller a character sheet and or tokens in roll 20. This is not something that is covered in this video. In order to do, as the GM, go to your Journal and double click on the character sheet you want to assign. Once open click the edit button in the upper right hand corner. Next you should see two inputs, one for whos journal the character shows up in and one for who can controller or edit the character. If you click on them you can select which player can do such.
Roll 20's UI has changed since this video was posted, however the overall process is pretty much the same for importing rolls and other information from DnDBeyond as well as syncing health etc.
Good idea, but who taught this guy how to create a how-to video? He speeds through this way too fast -- and doesn't explain how to get to half of the stuff ... wtf? literally have to go back 20 times. dude slow down.

So Wait
Does the GM only need to download beyond 20 or all players
Each player that wants to use it would need to download it. There are no dependencies on the GM needing it as all of the rolls are displayed in Roll 20.
Sadly, this is a misleading title, because this does NOT import your character sheet to roll20 but instead sends your rolls from D&D Beyond to the virtual table in roll20.
Nice tutorial! Thanks for this one!
Anyway I don't know if that's just me but could you please next time speak juuust little bit slower :D it is very hard to concentrate and it seems like my head will be blown off :D too much speed)).
I think most of people wouldn't mind if the video is 1 minute longer .)
But as I said I apprecite your work!!!
Can you use to link to a character already in roll 20?
I am not sure what you mean by your question.
Does each player need to download the extension or can the GM 'import' all the characters?
To me that feels like a mixed question. Instead how about, Every character that has DnDBeyond character sheet, needs to have a counter part in Roll20. Each PC that you want to be able to use one of those linked character sheets needs to have the plugin and both Roll20 and DnDBeyond loaded. So all three parts are needed on each PC that you want to use.
Thanks again for helping out!
@@bgreaud ...I was never asking about characters but players.
You need to be the one running the game apparently? I can't seem to do this as a player.
Your Dm has to do some things but once the init setup is taken care of each player can roll or make changes from their DnDBeyond sheet.
I can not seem to find hitpoints... am I that blind?
It's listed as "hp" in the dropdown menu. Should be two before you get into the I(s)
@@Klastic It showed up once the players first logged on. It was strange, but thanks for the reply
Hp work fine, but initiative is syncing to the role tracker annoyingly
What is it doing?
My hp arent getting updated! Even though i did it exactly like u did
the name has to be identical in the Roll 20 as it is in DnDBeyond. I had the same problem.
Thanks for helping out!
@@Klastic I had the same issue. 😉
If you are still running into this issue, here is a in-depth video on setting up HP syncing. th-cam.com/video/RpbqQVa3NV8/w-d-xo.html
Could this work on mobile too? Specifically with Samsung Android?
Might be a little helpful if description videos slowed down. Its not a tiktok my man.
This would be way more useful if you showed how to actually import the character sheet INTO roll20. You seem to skip over the step entirely
Feel free to read through the comments and find the thread where I have addressed this.
Good video but you go way too fast. You need to slow down the audio and demonstrating where you are clicking.
no offense but this is summarized too much. how does the dnd beyond character sheet to get to roll20?
i love you
this doesnt actually import your stuff to roll 20 tf?
If you are wanting your character sheet copied over, no it does not do that. It does however import your rolls and other information from your DnDBeyond character sheet into roll 20 as needed.
this seems to be out of date now 😞
I have been using this once a week for a few years now without an issue.
Too fast and too many assumptions of user knowledge
I love the information, but man, having to pause constantly because you are talking so fast. Not trying to be too critical but just wanted to say something.
That is the intendent way to watch my videos. Watch through once to get a general idea of what is going on. Then watch again and pause as needed or use the settings in TH-cam to slow the video down.
You were talking a bit too fast and I didn't understand half of it.
You may slow down the video under the setting icon -> playback speed
dude u talk so fast that the flash had to put this video on .5 speed
Sorry but apart from not being able to keep up with you as you speed through this video, there seems to be a number of assumptions that us mere mortals understand what you are both doing and talking about.
A friendly reminder that there are options to slow down video, along with being able to watch as many times as needed. The assumptions that are made are that you already have a basic understand of how to use Roll 20(or have a GM who knows) and DnDBeyond.
Great video. A few pointers. Talk slower.
You go way too fast in this video. I hope you've slowed down in newer ones.
This doesn't in any way show how to import. Just integrate.
Wow you talk WAY to fast. And nothing in the virtual Roll20 game I have joined allows me to edit who controls or can edit a character.
If you click on them you can select which player can do such.
you didn't import it, you are still using it at dndbeyond -_-
This video didn't help at all. I think its too out of date.
Roll 20's UI has changed since this video was posted, however the overall process is pretty much the same for importing rolls and other information from DnDBeyond as well as syncing health etc.
Good idea, but who taught this guy how to create a how-to video? He speeds through this way too fast -- and doesn't explain how to get to half of the stuff ... wtf? literally have to go back 20 times. dude slow down.
settings > playback speed > .5
Not what looking for way to complicated and way too fast. Hard to follow.
Feel free to find another video that does helps you. Sorry it wasn't what you were looking for.
Way too fast
Feel free to use the built in video speed controls or pause when you need to do something.
I dont believe import means what you think it does. Waste of time.
Dude slow down lol
Settings Icon -> Playback Speed
Will you Fkn Slow down..Other than that informative
Settings Icon -> Playback speed
He talks so fast
