    This little Trimaran is quite exceptional, to handle a gale in the North Sea with ease at 24' is extraordinary I cannot think of any other yacht of that size that could cope at all, and this was fun in spite of the awful weather. Well Aldis the Designer!, The problem is that having experienced this Tri' one can never realy enjoy any other.

    Hello Stephen, These videos are realy interesting. I have daggerbords on my tri. And komming summer i was panning to redesign them, give then sligtly curve, and make them in a lighter matiriel, fibe,carbol-epoxy.

      Many people have been tinkering with foils over the years. But Aldis Eglaijs has 40 years experience with them. And there is a lot more to foils than meet the eye. So good luck with your experimenting.

      I haven't seen the ninjas. Yes the Catri24 has an enormous cabin. The space inside is amazing. 5 berths! That is whay I called it TARDIS, like Dr Who's space ship that was bigger on the inside than on the outside.

      No problem. Did you watch the entire video? Did you read my blog? We sailed through two gales on the way back from Latvia. And obviously I was not using the camera during the worst periods. I was busy! I've sailed in your region and the sea is the same. When it's rough it's tough.

      Yes indeed. A great boat. It has just been sold again and is still in fine fettle, which speaks volumes of the designer and the builder. Shame it seems to be impossible to buy a Catri these days.

    Where is the catri 24 now and are they every going to put it on the market?

      TARDIS was sold to an American in 2006 and was only sold a year ago or so. The Catri 24 has been succeeded by the Catri 25 and you CAN order one. Phone me if you'd like to own one.

    Stephen, How much will the Catri 24 retail for, and will it be available in the US?

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom, the CATRI 24 is no longer available but CATRI are putting the finishing touches to the prototype of the new CATRI 25 that will be 100% hydrofoiling, as opposed to the 90% of the CATRI 24 featured in the video.

    we fish and troll for swordfish and marlin here in south Florida from our 18 ft Cat at approx 4-6 knots our max speed for ours runs at 25 knots with our racing spinnaker in down wind were a racing A class ship but this blows me away

    Great video! But why is the total avg. speed only 2.5ks?
    However, I'm really intersted to see new model, it's nearly a decade from Catri 24, so why I'm expecting great technology improvements?

    If I could see both amas out of the water this boat would be incredibly fast.

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But then it would not be as safe. It's already incredibly fast but it is designed for the leeward hull always to be in contact with the water.

      15kn is just cruising speed. This boat did more like 25kn! Check out my 2005 blog reports on sailing back from Latvia.

    boat knots don't mean much without the associated windspeed.

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gerry S Well they do if you are a monohull sailor for whom such speeds are unimaginable and if you are any kind of a sailor you can judge the wind speeds anyway by simply looking at the water. Anyway this boat is no longer available to buy (unless you want to go to the USA and buy it second hand. However, the Catri 25, th-cam.com/video/ZbVH6rFqVpY/w-d-xo.html is available new, and it is significantly faster than the 24 that you have been watching here, especially in light airs.

    • @gerrys6265
      @gerrys6265 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephen Walker Thanks Stephen. I am a monohull sailor but 20 years still doesn't let me judge the windspeed correctly from the narrowed focus of the camera lens. The difference between 15 to 20 is not that significant if you are in sheltered waterways and not knowing from which direction it comes relative to that. With non-planing hulls of course the difference in speed is not that great as windspeed increases beyond a certain limit anyway.....you need to start reefing.
      The trifoil sounds and looks like a blast....wonder why (flaw?) it is not in production?

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Gerry S The Catri 25 is ready for production. If you order one it will be produced. Understand that within the boating world there are motor boats & sailing boats, monohulls and multihulls, catamarans and trimarans, conventional and foiling and these are listed in ever diminsihing market sizes. What I am saying is that there are lots of BMW drivers who fancy a motor boat because they think that they can just jump in and turn the key to go boating at 20 knots. There are not so many people in the world who wake up thinking "today I will go and buy a foiling trimaran because then I can go sailing at 20 knots". But this is actually the ultimate safe but fast sailing experience. Aldis Eglajs spent the first half of his life designing sailing boats to go fast. When he was just 17 he "invented" the catamaran because living behind the Iron Curtain he did not know that they had been invented 1000 years ago by the polynesians. And following a catastrophic catamaran capsize he spent the second half of his life designing fast sailing boats that are safe. This is the holy grail for sailors. Not everybody wants to break world sailing speed records - a hazardous occupation. But every sailor wants to be safe and to go faster. In monohulls people will go to extraordinary lengths to get an extra tenth of a knot out of a boat. But with multihulls we are now talking about 10s of knots with the advent of foilers. Most people seem to think that the Americas cup boats were the first foilers around. But they are very much mistaken. So if you are looking for a fast, safe trimaran then look no further than the Catri 25.

    Does it ever fly clear?

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      fiddler2u No it doesn't. It is designed for the leeward float always to be in contact with the water although supported by the foils. This is the SAFE way to sail on foils. Those other foiling vessels that sail clear of the waves are extremely vulnerable to pitchpole!

  • @rybalkojul
    @rybalkojul 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    What max speed boat?

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The most I eever got out of the CATRI 24 was 25kn. But the CATRI 25 will be even faster. Of course you need flat water and strong winds to achieve maximum speeds and such conditions do not occur all the time. So the boat has to be able to produce good performance in all conditions. This is what the design achieves.
