I have been using audible from august, and it's really a wonderful and helpful method to combine reading and listening at the same time. It has helped me a lot in expanding my vocabulary (as a book often does) and also getting familiar with the British accent which I am trying to learn. Thank you for advising this method. And also I am an Indian and we use sounds like Chee to express disgust. (We do often use the English sounds too).
People outside of the UK , stuck with the image of how the British have this same facial expression, have got it completely wrong. Believe it or not, we can be open and helpful and smile and laugh and express how we feel.
I am half Moroccan and half Finnish. In Finland we say "Yök", "Yäk", "Hyi", "Hyh hyh", "Yää" (Less common expression on paper), and many others not listed. The following curse word is usually "Vittu". I.e. "HYI VITTU!" In Morocco I have heard people using "Yaaah" (In Finnish Y is like ü or ы but in Morocco I mean like a J in finnish) and "FFFFFF".
"Bloody hell Harry!" Does that count? In bahasa, there's only a few formal ways to express disgust.. on the other hand, we have tons of slang words to express it. We often use words like "ihhh", "najis", "najong", "komuk" (this one has a special term to use, and it'll sounds better if you combine it with bgst, "komuk bgst"), etc
Interesting topic!😝 Well, in Chinese🇨🇳, mostly we make a long sound of 咦/i:/ showing disgust. First in rising tone and falling tone at the end. Make sure it's long or it shows different feeling😂
Here in Brazil we use “eca” (pronounced as “e” from “extra” + “ca” from Lancaster) and the more disgusted we feel about something the longer the sound. 🇧🇷
When we feel disgusted we say “Wooeeee” or “Oeeee” 🇯🇵 English sound is cute I think By the way, a guy sleeping outside strangely in front of a building made me blood run cold.
In Russia we'd usually say "behh", "foo" or "ew" when expressing disgust.. it's funny (or quite interesting hehe) that many of these words and expressions sound so StephenFry-British-posh to me I can even imagine him saying them while seeing the words. Thank you for your lessons, i enjoy them a lot and they really helped me with building my vocabulary!
In Greece, we usually say "bliah" (μπλιαχ!). But lately I have observed that the younger generation uses a lot more the American "ew!" sound, when they see, hear, smell or taste something disgusting. Lucy, this video is very interesting and fun to watch. Thank you so much for this lesson! Great idea! 🤓👍
Great video Lucy. You sell the English language short. Repugnant, vile, and especially ghastly, are rather good words. However, "foul" is a simple, effective word you did overlook.
Hi, Lucy. It might be useful to mention that preceding our vocabulary for disgust, we might well use words or phrases as an emphasis. For example, 'Oh my god, that was/is.....or he's/she's. Depending on one's idiolect, that could be 'gosh', 'golly', 'oh dear', 'good heavens', 'for heaven's sake', 'how awful', 'blimey'.
Smelly/dirty people and unpleasant odors make me feel sick. Besides that, I am disgusted by cheaters of any kind, snakes, and rudeness. In my language (Serbian), there are two main ways to express you're disgusted. The first one is "fuj", and the second one is "pi" (mostly used by children in order to describe food they don't like). Lucy, thanks for the great video, keep publishing more content like this. Cheers! 😊😊
I'm from the north of Mexico and we adopted the "ew" expression from the American English and we say it with a noisy voice and an awkward face, and is common used by sassy girls. We use ¡Qué asco! That its pretty common in all ages. And ¡Guacala! But this last one is more informal and childish. Saludos! Super amo tu acento ❤️❤️
In Polish we often say fuj to express our disgust. We pronounce it as phooy. Apart from fuj we sometimes say blee (pronounced as bleah). By the way, you're charming even when you're talking about disgust, repulsion and vomiting😊
