Most of the subjects we have to remember and interprete are about economy and politics so it's very difficult to visualize such things but thank you so much for the tip i remembed all the story using the smell and everything

This is very helpful. Very clear. I just started working at a school where I have to translate most of the time. My biggest problem is retaining more than a couple of sentences.
Great video, it is functional and appreciable for all who need to improve their memory. It is about visualization, using of our senses, to be a protagonist as well. Involvement is the key.
I prefer simultaneous interpretation but, I'm going to practice this, because sometimes I'm requested to do consecutive, and sometimes this scares me a little...Thanks so much for sharing this!!!
Simultaneous doesn’t require as much memory as consecutive. But it does require a very good knowledge of both languages to be able to convey the same message.

I am a girl, spanish native speaker, when you where telling the little story, I did not picture myself as mary, I did in in third person like if it was a movie on the TV, I actually gave a face to Mary in the story.
I think when interpreting from English to Spanish, it makes more sense to do it in third person since the grammar for first person and third person is drastically different and you dont want to slip up and say fui instead of fue. That is an automatic fail at interpreting. However when interpreting spanish to english, the method from the video is fine because first person and third person almost always share the same verbs in the past and futrure tenses, or in other words, she and I both went and will go again. All I have to do is change the subject.

As a french speaker, I find it easier to simultaneously interpret from french to english than the opposite. Is it something that beginners often report ? I heard that interpreters only go from language B to A (in my case from english to french)
Thank you for the clearly presented and a useful video. I am curious what would you recommend in the following situations: 1. You are interpreting consecutievely at a meeting for a British delegation visiting an agency in Spain (for example). The CEO of that local Spanish agency sometimes speaks unclearly and jumps from one topic to another, which makes it very hard for you to understand what he is trying to say ( although you are native Spanish speaker just like him), as well as making it hard to interpret (convey the meaning) in English to the visiting British delegation. 2. During the meeting, the CEO's assistant (a local Spanish lady) ocassionally makes certain corrections to your interpretations (which you openly acknowledge and agree with and you are aware they are accurate and justified corrections), but she also makes some incorrect or unnecessary corrections too. For example the CEO said "Humane", you interpret it exactly the same way in English (the words are similar), but the CEO Assistant makes a correction looking at you and saying "Humanitarian" (it is likely that she actually wanted to correct what the CEO said, but looked at you, so it looked as if you have made an error). Also, at one point, the CEO assistant starts talking in English to the Head of the British delegation, saying the there must have been some misunderstanding at one point (probably in the best faith, to make sure everyone was on the same page).... This has to do with the credibility of the interpreter, which can sometimes be challenged in many different ways by those that are higher up in the power scale, intentionally or unintentionally, and the ways in which the interpreter could best defend his/her credibility.
We apologize for taking long in the response but we were under big renovations in the company and now we are back and strong. It can be incredibly challenging at times to take notes when they jump around a lot. Although I always promote relying on memory, it is a good idea to be very proficient in notetaking because it is difficult to keep your train of thought in this situation. In other words, when the speaker has a lot of scattered ideas it is harder to keep them in your memory so you have to rely more on your notes. Now for your second question I may say that it is very challenging. I have been in situations where a person constantly was challenging my interpretation. This usually happens when the person is not fully bilingual and has some grasp of the language. For some reason some people think that this gives them the authority to correct the interpreter. You must firmly stand by your interpretation and not let them gain advantage. If we let them correct us constantly this can be an issue. Like I said before, it is usually one or two people that have this tendency in a crowd. I’ll give you an example. I was interpreting for a Cuban delegation of doctors that visited Riverside California. There was this one lady that corrected me twice and she was very wrong in her corrections. Luckily there were a lot of professors there that knew I was doing a good job and told her not to be disruptive because she was correcting perfect interpretation. So, don’t feel bad.

Lexii Kenzell, I agree. Is a totally different scenario. Although we do require a lot more concentration. Cases are mostly Medical. Doctors and nurses from China, Sri Lanka, Iran, Ucrania, Pakistan, (etc) whose accent make it difficult to understand, and we can't bruise their ego by asking them to enunciate clearly. On the other hand, the patient, who talk endlessly wanting to tell their story instead of answering the question. TONS OF PATIENCE, THAT, WE DO NEED.
Maria Ofelia Coria Thank you for sharing your experience. Many clients don’t understand how it is painful for the interpreter when conveying the messages from the LEPs who are (ignorant) and never give enough time to the interpreter to help them properly.
Given that hearing and listening are important components to interpreting, but, to say notetaking is a hindrance is absurd. Notetaking, for me, enhances the other components needed for interpreting. This is just confusing to those who are seeking help with their weakness and performe well at what they love, interpreting. This is discouraging.
Hello Daca. Whatever works for you is the best method in the world. I appreciate the comment and your opinion certainly counts. I am simply relaying knowledge from experts in the field. Now, this is intended mainly for court interpreting (my field of expertise), if you have to take notes for 15 minutes or more in a speech then you definitely have to use one of the most traditional methods (like the Rozan Method). This is mainly for shorter utterances of 40-70 words.
Sorry but your techniques will not work for me. Also the short note taking doesn’t come natural. I am 43 yrs old. I took shorthand and got it all. I know they say that will wear me out but so far and I’m just starting but that’s what I did way back in college. But I don’t have visualization-I believe do to various he’s traumas I have suffered, but it could be genetic bc my mom and one sister have the same but they can vis a little.
