Also you forgot to say that as the magnification increases so the actual depth of field decreases. On the lower magnification more of what you view is in focus. The higher the magnificence the more you have to move the item backwards and forwards to get it in focus.

Thanks you so much I bought loups and items on the internet and no good, but came across your video and your spot on with the Donegan Optivisor review, I also came across a supplier here in Ireland, now I am sure there are other suppliers, but the supplier in Ireland gives Ref numbers for all yours from the 20" to the 4" again thanks for the tips and I am buying one right now and your review is excellent. I took your advice and bought a pair of Optivisors. After using cheap plastic knock-offs, the clarity and optical quality of these are exceptional! And, unlike the cheap versions...they adjust securely and stay comfortable for hours of carefree use. Since I fuss over polishing so much, I bought the 2.75X (nr. 7), and I think these will help get the results I want in my work. Thanks again for the recommendation!

Just checking in after buying the Optivisor's on Dave's recommendation. My prior pair were cheap knockoffs--3.5X, but I bought the Optivisor #7 (2.75X). Here's something I ddin't expect--the glass Optivisor lenses at just 2.75X allow me to see much more detail than the cheap pair at higher magnification. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I still am--because it's so noticeable, and I get better depth of field as well. Like Dave says in the video--you'll see how important quality optics are.
Likewise. You'd be forgiven for thinking tat 1.5X or 2x magnification wont make a difference, but as you've confirmed it makes a HUGE difference !. Well worth it. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Dave
Note too that as with a camera lens, the lower magnifications have greater depth of field, the higher magnification less DOF. Dave
I looked into these and found the price was significantly higher than other brands. But I knew these were the best and I splurged, because like you said, if you can't see then how can you do good work? I never regret spending extra to get quality tools, and these are perfect. The key phrase here is "other brands" there are lot of cheap copies out there, but I allays swear by the originals. Dave
I have several knock-offs of this design I got for cheap, but the downside is they aren't made to last. The construction and optics of Optivisor look excellent. I know that buying a good tool once vs. buying ten cheaper tools over a decade is a better use of my money. Great video--I'll consider this brand next time I break a cheap knock-off.
The first Optivisor you see me wearing, with the loupe on, is probably older than me. Still perfect. Dave
True about "all" kinds of head magnifier thingies. They seem to have lots of flaws. What pizzez me off most, is the moving parts wear out faaast, so whatever you adjust won't stay in place. I repair/remake everything, so not a huge problem, but I'd prefere to have been able to afford quality from the start every time.
Hi, I bought the Nr-3 & Nr-4 optivisors.
1-I used the Nr-3 with my metal lathe, and found that if I use it without my glasses its more than perfect with distance and magnification, I am a very happy man. With the glasses I probaly will get away with a Nr-2 optivisor.
2-The Nr-4 I think will work with me grinding toolbits for the lathe on a bench grinder also without glasses, my head can go nearer here, or this may work for my wife knitting. I must still prove this.
Ok, my wife chosen the Nr-4 for knitting machine, very happy.
Years ago I got a cheap one with plastic glasses, looks similar, and it was rubbish from the start, I cant even find it.

Are these mostly to add magnification for people who wear glasses? If one doesn't wear glasses would a pair of reading glasses with 2.5X work just as good for magnification? Thank you for showing the Optivisor.
Doesn't matter if you wear glasses or not, they add magnification, either to bare eyes, or eyes with glasses. Dave

Excellent info. I almost bought the cheap Chinese knock-offs on Ebay, but after watching your video, I know to get the Donegan brand. Also, I didn't know the difference between the Optivisor and the Optivisor AL. As you pointed out, the Optivisor has the blue precision optical glass whereas the Optivisor AL (LX) uses a slightly lower quality of lens (plastic). I think the AL designation stands for Acrylic Lens.
Yes, I believe you're correct. The AL seem to have acrylic lenses. I'm sure they are great quality, but it kind of misses the point to me. If you're going to get one, get the best, IE the glass lenses. After all your eyesight is very precious. Thanks for watching.Dave

What Mag should I get for soldering tiny SMD's? They are 8 pin about 7mm x 5mm (very small)
The higher the magnification, the closer to your face. For most jobs I use 2.5X (Number 5) which focuses at around 8" Dave
The loupe adds magnification or multiply the magnification?
The loupe gives more magnification. good for looking at hallmarks. Dave
For the type of work I do I was advised to buy Quote" Lens 3x-4x magnification, ability to adjust so they'll match eye distance. I also use reading glasses is this for me? What Donegan optivisor should I buy ? Da ? Thanks
The highest magnification Optivisor is the DA-10 which is 3.5 X magnification. But this focuses at 4 inches, so it really depends on what you are doing. Note the table here www.doneganoptical.com/products/optivisor Dave

Rule #1: Do not buy it unless it's a genuine Optivisor. On a side note, when I was a "young buck" apprentice tool and die maker, I used to laugh at the old dudes that had to wear these. Well, now I'm the old dude and have to wear one, and I'm no longer laughing. I've had my (numerous) Optivisors for over 25 years...and they're absolutely amazing.

Presumably you're younger than me. At 50 I now can't manage without them. But when you do need them, the Optivisor is the way to go. Regularly come up on ebay, quite cheaply. Dave
