You have liver cancer, 18 months left to live, and a net worth of $230 million. How do you spend your last moments? On drugs? Sex? Wild escapes across the World? Maybe you would. Bowie, however, got himself into the recording booth and lent his whole voice rehearsing and recording over and over--shooting scenes and retaking them for videos constantly, despite dying of a fatal and often painful diease. That's Bowie's way of doing it. Giving us--all of us--his last moments.
That is arguably the greatest gift anyone has ever given me.

I remember, out of all the amazing things I read the day he passed, the one that hit straight to my heart and I've never forgotten since was a tweet, of all things, from Carrie Brownstein that is the perfect descriptor for the emotional mixture of the impact he left on music and social/cultural history, itself, through the world with the feeling of "How is that even possible?". She summed up the shock, sadness, and confusion that set in when hearing of his passing perfectly - "It feels like we lost something elemental, as if an entire color is gone."

Bowie entering the closet: his coffin.
The two Bowie's: the bedridden one to symbolise his body decaying, the active one dancing and writing around the room to symbolise his mind's determination to finish the album, mind over matter.
The girl under his bed trying to claw at him: symbolises the cancer trying to take hold of him, and, eventually, succeeding.
The thought, effort and cleverness put into this music video is mind boggling, how he insinuated his death days before, is and will hopefully go down as one of the most artistically done albums ever made.
RIP Bowie, we'll sure as hell miss you.

I don't get emotional when stars pass away but I did the day David Bowie died. This masterpiece of an album came out two days before his passing, January 8th, on his 69th birthday. My husband and I listened non-stop for months, helping us mourn the passing of this great genius. Little did I know that seven years later on the exact day, I would lose my husband of 13 years suddenly and unexpectedly. As you can imagine this song has taken on new significance. David was good friends with Freddie Mercury, and Queen, and he learned a lot from Freddie's death. Freddie was hounded by the press as he was ill, and dying, so David cleverly concealed his own illness until the very end. David also saw that even Freddie was dying, that he still went into the studio, and created one last masterpiece with Queen - the 'Innuendo' album, which was Freddie's goodbye to his fans. David also gathered all of his strength, as Freddie did years earlier, and recorded his own final masterpiece, and farewell to his fans, to the world. We can't beat death, but we can - if we're clever, go out on our own terms, which is what David did. Well done Major Tom.

This video is extremely meaningful. He's writing furiously, trying to write the songs that he has in mind, and you can see him coming up with more ideas. He's desperately trying to keep writing while death is trying to pull him back, into the darkness of that wardrobe, and he gets visibly angry when he's pulled away from the paper he was writing on.
His story wasn't finished. He had much more that he wanted to write, that he wanted to tell us, that he wanted to create. And there was nothing he could do about it, so he left us with this.

I sat next to my Granddad's bed as he was passing away. The parts in the video where David leans upward and off the pillow it reminded me of something my Granddad started doing in his final days. It's like he could feel himself going and would try to sit up and grab the rail of the bed hospice brought in for him so he could be at home with his family instead of in the hospital. I believe there is a veil between here and the other side. The closer you get to death the thinner the veil becomes. As far as the meaning behind this and the other songs and videos, I'm not really sure what I think or how I feel about them quite yet. One of those things that will come to you in time it's right for you to understand it. Wherever he is I hope he's in peace.

To me there ain't no vail. It's just you wanna stay alive so you try and hold on to something...anything but you go anyways. I don't get why people have such strong feelings about death it's just fear. I'm afraid to die I love life. I know I'll still die but even then I try to live. So I just think that people need time to except death I think that this song is probably about fear and excepting death.

I met David when he died, through this song. On the same day, the TV news were announcing his death alongside the debut of his latest album and how related his final album was to this ending journey. After the tribute to him on the Portuguese news, they pass on this song. I was instantly hipnotized by the suffering, the deepness, the pain, the sound. Right after it, I mentally write the name of the song so I wouldn't forget it. I finished dinner, and went straight to TH-cam and listened to the song one more and one more and one more time... And I was only 15 at the time.
This was the only David Bowie song I knew for a while. Then, I figured I knew other ones, like Changes. One or 2 years after that, I decided to deep search on Bowie's musical and cultural legacy. A genius. Still today this is one of my favourite songs.
    Thank you Bowie

AceAttorny I agree. It is the best part of an otherwise very grim and disturbing requiem. When he puts his hand on his hip, I call that his Bette Davis moment. Notice also that at this point he is wearing the very same Kabbalah/astral travel suit that he could be seen wearing 40 years earlier in the photo that appeared on the back cover of some editions of his 1976 "Station to Station" album.

This video was meant to be...I'm not sure if this is the right word I'm looking for...allegorical pertaining to his long career and the various stages and directions he took throughout. It seems to be a nod to the tendency among people and media to pigeonhole him into one specific creative eras, when he's clearly moved passed that and grown. As if he's saying that "it was all characters. I take the David Bowie you know out of the closet, I put him back in and I move on and then under it all, I'm the human David Bowie and I'm real. All those Bowie's you've seen have all been facets of me, are still here, and always will be." Throughout it all, being so ferociously creative and full of ideas to the point where he can't fit them all in. It's both sentimental and heartbreaking.

He could have kept making Ziggy Stardust albums which were we pleasing his fan base and selling too. He didn';t move on because he HAD to. But he decided to move on. to continue to challenge himself. This often displeased the fans who wanted more of the same.... but he did what he wanted. So its always funny to me when people say that a certain album was the "best" or the worst. Usually it means that the particular genre didn't speak to them, not that the album was subjectively bad.

My dad is now at the same age as Bowie was. My dad has the exact same disease, and he is just as weak as we can see Bowie was. I can imagine how many takes shooting this video required due to the disease.
Like David Bowie, my dad was a professional musician, all his life was about music and he played in many rock bands. Everyone in the town, who had something to do with music knew my dad.
Like David Bowie, my dad wasn't interested in dressing conventionally. Before this disease got so bad as it is now, he expressed himself by wearing just anything he liked. He was a rebel, and people weren't sure if he was a boy or a girl.
This song sounds like what it feels like when the air is slowly getting thinner and thinner and we know what's going to happen very soon. Thinking about it makes my brain whirl. This song sounds exactly like what it feels like.
I don't know if it's a matter of days or weeks, but it's soon. I can't imagine my life after his death, but I have promised him to be strong.
I have never experienced anything as sad as this. I love my dad very much.

I teach mythology and in my classes, we discuss modern myths. Most myths are based in reality, and over time, they take on the mythic aspects. David Bowie was already a legend but now, he will become a myth. His name will be said over and over, and reality will intertwine and mix with the fantastic and the magic. Ancient Egyptians believed that as long as one's name continues to be spoken (or is written somewhere), that person will continue to live in the after-world; David Bowie will live for what will pass as "forever," long, long after other "celebrities" are forgotten. Others are but pale imitations, but he was bona fide. Orpheus by any any other name or style is still Orpheus. Sing to Persephone now, Mr. Bowie, and accept the accolades of other heroes and artists.

What a sad person you are. First, yes, your Christian tales are myths: they are based on the tales of earlier religions. I could explain to you how and why, but it would fall on deaf ears.
Second, it is not your place to judge David Bowie--when you make judgements about his status in the "afterlife," you are taking on the responsibility of your god.
Third, I was speaking in symbol and metaphor, something that you obviously cannot grasp.
I do not corrupt the minds of my students: I teach mythology. I do not share my beliefs because school is not the place. We read the tales and discuss them; my classroom is not a church, indoctrinating the students who came to learn, not to be brainwashed. They can make up their own minds; it is not my intent and would violate my trust and responsibility as a teacher to even try to influence their beliefs.
And you have no idea what I believe.
We also do not discuss the religions of my students, either--it is not the place to do so.

As an 18 year cancer survivor, this video breaks my heart. I wish you could have beaten it, David Bowie. That's the unpredictability of this disease. There still is no magic bullet when it comes to cancer. All you can do is make the best of what time is given you, and that he did. What beautiful last works he left us....he still ended up beating cancer if you consider he finished this and left one last gift to his fans....incredible, haunting and brilliant work here.

We're sitting watching the playback of the take we just did and one of us said - I don't remember who it was, to be honest, I think it was Jimmy:
'Hey David, wouldn't it be funny if you ended the video by going back into the closet.'
And David started giggling like mad: 'Yeah, look, David Bowie has come back into the closet! Fuck yeah, we've got to do that. Let's do that right away.'
Even at the very end of things, he would have a laugh and he would be audacious. He had an enormous loyalty to his fans." - Johan Renck (Director), from 'David Bowie: A Life' by Dylan Jones.
