Glen Campbell is considered one of the best country guitarists ever. He syarted off as a session guitarist, part of The Wrecking Crew, which were used when another artist needed the very best musicians on their recordings. He was part of the recording and touring Beach Boys for awhile and then went solo, having a bunch of hits. This video is from his TV variety show, which is why it looks smaller and more intimate, because it's just a live audience in a television studio.
Why just "country" guitar player? He played everything...on Beach boys records, rock, country, pop. He was an all around guitar player in my book. Jimmy Webb was not even a country music writer, they just put a spin on him that way. Glen was considered one of the first truly country music crossover artists, which led to Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton, and even Taylor Swift today whether people like her or not today. They tried to pin the country label on Linda Ronstadt back in the day too, but she transformed herself out of that limited role, as she was a singer first, not a slave to a genre. I like some country music, but my musical tastes are wide.
Glenn Campbell is LEGEND! One of the greatest instrumentalists of all time. He was also in the original True Grit. Go down his catalog. You will not be disappointed. Great reaction
Thanks for reacting to this great legend. I grew up listening to his music. Glen Campbell was one of the most talented entertainers & guitarists in the world. He had a lot of hits such as "By the Time I Get To Phoenix", "Gentle On My Mind", "Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife", "Galveston", "Try A Little Kindness", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Southern Nights" etc. Sadly he got Alzheimer's later in life. The last song he recorded was "I'm Not Gonna Miss You".
Glen’s voice is magic here. No strain, smooth, sweet, and pure. Breath control off the charts. I appreciate this even more today because I don’t take this talent for granted anymore. The way he sustains those lines! Heaven
If you want to experience his guitar talent, listen to him play "The William Tell Overture". I do believe you will be at least impressed, if not amazed! I really enjoy your reactions AB!
🔥🔥 ..love it AB .. Glen has a number of great hits .. he is considered one of the best guitarist in Country Music .. try "Gentle On My Mind" .. love it ..
You're probably too young to remember telephone and telegraph lines, but the instrumentation evoked the tapping of the telegraph and the whine of the wind whistling against the telephone wires.
My favorite song by him. Smooth voice. Sweet love song. ❤️"I need you more than want you" Great line. Back in those days, the song PRODUCTION was major part of the song. Violin sections etc. Thanks for this❗
Glen Campbell hosted the show. Had such a crush on him ❤❤as a first grader I got special permission to stay up to watch the “Goodtime Hour”- January 1969 to June 1972. He was an amazing musician.
He started out with a summer replacement show in 1968 for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, so by January 1969 he had his own show from then until Spring 1972. In-between the summer replacement show and January 1969, he filmed True Grit with John Wayne and Kim Darby. Tommy Smothers just died a week or so ago at age 86....
Glenn died of Alzheimer’s. After his diagnosis he was able to do an international tour for about 20 months. He was able to continue playing guitar on muscle memory. Check out his final recording I’m Not Going To Miss You.
You would not believe how many hit records Glen Campbell played on as a studio cat with the legendary Wreaking Crew. They were the group you used on your record for success. Glen had many hits and a stellar career.
Glen Campbell is indeed a legend. In 1969, his records outsold the Beatles. He is probably one of the most underrated guitarists in music - not just country music. His versions of the William Tell Overture are truly remarkable - you'll find one on an acoustic guitar, and one on an electric guitar - either one will blow you away. I also second the "Ghost Riders in the Sky" duet with Roy Clark. It's only three minutes long, but is amazing for how much the two of them can jam into 3 minutes. BTW, Glen was a friend of Elvis, and (as part of the Wrecking Crew) played on the Viva Las Vegas soundtrack. Elvis covered several of his songs. You would also like his cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying." Multiple Grammys, CMAs and ACM awards. Welcome to the rabbit hole.
Just started listening and you said he's playing guitar too.. Oh Heck yeah.. Glen Campbell one of the best guitar players ever. He gave guitar lessons to Eddie Van Halen and Alice Cooper I've heard.. not writing that in stone but Glen was a master with the guitar.
"By The Time I get To Phoenix", "Gentle On My Mind", "Galveston", and "Rhinestone Cowboy" were big hits. Any video that features his guitar playing - one is a live rendition of "Gentle On My Mind".
Recerting interview recently with Alice Cooper who was very good friends with Glen Campbell and called him one of the best songwriters and guitar players he ever met. A lot of people covered this song too . The changes are so beautiful how could you not
Live version? No way. The studio recorded version of this song featuring the legendary Wrecking crew, is one of the great recordings of the 60s, an aural masterpiece.
No, this is totally live. The record had Glen play a Fender VI bass solo ... he WAS the Wrecking Crew, or at least the biggest part of it. And all of his live shows were AMAZING.
I cry because it reminds me of watching the TV show as a kid with my parents, or riding in the backseat with my sisters in my mom's 1969 T Bird and hearing this on the 8 Track. Just a beautiful song that captures an era for people of my age, and the people, now gone, who were a part of those memories.
This song was written by Jimmy Webb from Oklahoma, where I worked as an electrical distribution lineman until a serious accident in the early 80s. The song, however, is about a telephone lineman back in the day when the telephone lines were strung above ground. I was an electrical lineman during that time, and I love Glenn Campbell and especially this song, but having telephone and then cable TV lines strung on power poles made more of an obstacle to climb over and sometimes through the service drops. Lol
I believe his greatest hit was Rhinestone Cowboy. It was the one to which I danced as a three, four-year-old. He played alongside the Duke in the first True Grit. 60s, 70s were his time.
BRO, This Ovation guitar Glen is pictured singing here is my exact model I bought used. It has all the gold finishes on the tuning keys, including his signature inscribed in 24 k gold. It's a unique guitar in the shape and resonance. Another mastermind on stringed instruments is Roy Clark. There is a duet of guitars when Roy Clark and Glen Campbell perform "Ghost Riders In The Sky"! THANK YOU!
This brought back so many memories! My parents met when my dad got his telephone truck stuck in a blizzard in North Dakota. He became an electrical line foreman in Colorado and Nebraska, some Kansas and Wyoming. So, I enjoyed this song.
the story is that Glen was recording this, and Jimmy Webb, the composer, called and said he hadn't finished the 3rd verse -Glen told him he had it taken care of, Which was that guitar solo. Also, the line "I need you more than want you/and I want you for all time" is the best line ever in a POP/Country song
Glen hosted the Goodtime Hour for about three years on CBS. You need to check out the documentary “I’ll Be Me” as he did a final tour while dealing with Alzheimer’s.
... this was a clip from an episode of "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" where he sang this live. This was one of his big hits, but he had a lot, lot more!!!!
Glenn Campbell was such a great guitarist and all round musician that people from all genres respected him. Eric Clapton once said that Glenn's finger movement left him 'awestruck.'
I'll never forget Glen telling the story in an interview of how he was merely playing acoustic guitar on Sinatra's Strangers in the Night, and Franks stopped the orchestra. He said: "Will you tell that kid on guitar over there to stop staring at me, let's start over" or something like that. it was Glen who was starstruck... years later they must have a big had a laugh about it.
Back in the day there was quite a bit of crossover, so even though Glen Campbell was a country singer, you'd hear his music on the radio even if it wasn't a country station. He had a lot of hits, but I always really liked his By the Time I Get to Phoenix
Glen was by most accounts a genuinely nice guy. He was good friends with Vincent Furnier, a.k.a. Alice Cooper. They played many golf games together, and Vince was among the first to notice when Glen's thought process first began to go astray. Mr. Alice Cooper reveals a lot about Glen in a number of interviews, too. Such a gift to the world, and such a tragic loss. BTW, Glen got to form an act with his kids, and they did many live shows, to overwhelmingly positive response, I might add. Thank you for placing this fine reaction video here, I liked & subscribed. FWIW, I'm 70.
Glen was from Delight, Arkansas. Started as a session musician. People who would ride in his tour bus later in his career loved listening to oldies with him because more often than not, he'd chime in with "yep, played on that!" and would tell stories about the session. He replaced Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys for about a year on tour.
One of my favorite songs, I was a child when this song came out, but I've always loved it! Also I don't think he has a "comb over" I think that's just the way they wore their hair back in the late sixties (1968).
Just FYI - He was born in Arkansas not Arizona. A lot of people get the two mixed up. I’m from Arkansas, and we are proud of this hometown boy. May he RIP. Thanks as always for the great reaction!
I saw a video of Glenn performing not too long before he passed away. Even though he Alzheimer’s pretty bad at the time, he still had that smooth voice and somehow he remember the lyrics.
Pretty sure it's Try a little Kindness, worth checking out please, if you've heard music from the 60s then you almost definitely heard Glen, as a studio musician he was on almost everything. great reaction.
You must round out your country experience with Roy Clark. One of the true icons and most talented with almost any instrument. Malaguena show cases his skill. He and Glen Campbell performed together. His song Yesyerday when i was young is my favorite and shows his vocal skills. Beautiful man.
This is also my second favorite Glen Campbell song of all time.. and he has many a hit... this came out when I was a baby or not born yet.. not sure.. I just love this song. My favorite is Gentle on my Mind.. and I don't know who told you he was from Arizona but that's not the case.. he was from Arkansas
AB You should check out his live performance in Sioux Falls North Dakota. His best songs are Galveston and Try A little kindness. Trust me you won't be disappointed.

It's not a comb-over, his hair's just parted on the side. A comb-over implies he's letting his hair grow long on the side, then combing it over to cover a bald head.
I would point out that his hair is a side-part, not a combover. A side-part was a common men's hairstyle for men who wanted to keep their hair off their forehead & have a full head of hair. A combover is employed by men with thinning hair to disguise the thinness.

For a first time listen I will never understand why reactors choose "live" versions over the studio. Often artists change the song up or their voice might be off or here the clapping covers some lyrics. I mean hey it's your channel so your show but it is something I wonder. Anyway favourite GC song as you call him is Gentle On My Mind

“Galveston” is one of my favorite Glen Campbell songs, but that’s a hard choice because his catalog is filled with great music.
My favorite song by him.
Smooth voice. Sweet love song. ❤️"I need you more than want you" Great line. Back in those days, the song PRODUCTION was major part of the song. Violin sections etc. Thanks for this❗

One of the most played radio songs of the 20th century. One of the best guitar players of all time.
Your comment is the best way to describe Glen, with no musical genre labels...he played everything...
Recerting interview recently with Alice Cooper who was very good friends with Glen Campbell and called him one of the best songwriters and guitar players he ever met. A lot of people covered this song too . The changes are so beautiful how could you not
One of my favorite Glen Campbell songs is his last. "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" with the home movies it is sad but comforting.
Absolutely - heartbreakingly beautiful.
One of the most talented country music artist ever.
AB thank you so much for reacting to Glen. Brought back a lot of memories 😊❤ Can I recommend Rhinestone Cowboy? Great song

Really? I didn’t know that . Learn something new every day 😊
BEACH BOYS ⁉️ That was need to me. Thanks for sharing.

That's an awesome story Lauren! 💖
Great story Lauren about your parents LOVE STORY ❣️ Thanks for sharing. This song is my favorite by him.
No one ever played a 12-string guitar like Glen Campbell
His people lived next door to my family in the 20’s-30’s Antoine, Pike Co., Arkansas! Love Glenn Campbell music ❤️❤️
Glen Campbell rip you are missed !❤

Glenn was maybe the most recorded guitar player in the world as a member of The Wrecking Crew.

Glen is amazing!
You are so adorable ❤
He was huge.
This was #1 country, #3 on the pop charts
The most beatiful song I have heard.
No question one the best vocalists and instrumentalists, what a legend!!!!!
He was very good.

Great rabbit hole to go down...such a talented man!
before his singing career started,u would hear him as part of the Wrecking crewon many songs in the 60's
I saw his last tour and even in late 70s great voice
One of my favorite songs, I was a child when this song came out, but I've always loved it! Also I don't think he has a "comb over" I think that's just the way they wore their hair back in the late sixties (1968).
The good time hour was his own TV show on for about 4 years
Awesome !👏👏👏👏
Great reaction AB!
Omg I love Glen Campbell
Talented artist. I'll keep my opinion of him as a person to myself.
He was in True Grit with John Wayne. Great actor too! Yes he probably was a babe in the 60s.
Just FYI - He was born in Arkansas not Arizona. A lot of people get the two mixed up. I’m from Arkansas, and we are proud of this hometown boy. May he RIP. Thanks as always for the great reaction!
Ted Nugent has said that Glen Campbell is the best electric guitarist ever. Eddie Van Halen had inquired how to get lessons from him.
I saw a video of Glenn performing not too long before he passed away. Even though he Alzheimer’s pretty bad at the time, he still had that smooth voice and somehow he remember the lyrics.
My mom took me to see him and Jerry Reed in Tampa at Curtis Hixon Hall a long, long, time ago.
Loved Rhinestone Cowboy and Southern Nights.
Pretty sure it's Try a little Kindness, worth checking out please, if you've heard music from the 60s then you almost definitely heard Glen, as a studio musician he was on almost everything. great reaction.
To see just how good he is on the guitar, may I suggest him doing The William Tell Overture. Member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Wichita Kansas, on the Prarie, putting up power lines.
You must round out your country experience with Roy Clark. One of the true icons and most talented with almost any instrument. Malaguena show cases his skill. He and Glen Campbell performed together. His song Yesyerday when i was young is my favorite and shows his vocal skills. Beautiful man.

The name of the show was the Glen Campbell good time hour
He was part of the legendary “wrecking crew” which backed up many artists in the studio. Research more!
You are right, shows back then were smaller and closer to the artist. You can see it in the older concerts.
Show some respect for an artist who was among the greats
"old hard hair"; but you can't deny the skills and talents...
Check out Southern Nights 1982 with Jerry Reed and Galveston!
Hear him cover Jackson Browne’s “These Days”.
Listen to "Gentle on My Mind." So good.
checkout Bella Taylor Smith, blind audition on The Voice Australia 2021, singing Ava Maria, just beautiful
He was a great guitarist as well. But a song with great lyrics, listen to “Gentle on My Mind”
AB You should check out his live performance in Sioux Falls North Dakota. His best songs are Galveston and Try A little kindness. Trust me you won't be disappointed.
Glen 7th Son of a 7th Son
Smooth voice
btw he is a guitar man
His guitar is an acoustic guitar
Glen Campbell has no comb over and he grew his hair long. Go and watch him sing McArthur's Park. He has long hair. Check out his songs. 👍
My very favorite version of this song is a cover by reggae legend Dennis Brown. It is incredibly haunting.
