  • Time travel back a full century for a day out at the beach c. 1921 in Holland. AI colorized and upscaled with sound for an immersive experience.
We love this 100 year old film, where we see normal working class people having fun.
When it came to swimming at the beach, social attitudes were still quite conservative in the early 1920's.
As in the two previous decades, women used mobile beach huts to change into their bathing suits in privacy. The hut would then be rolled down to the waters edge for a secluded dip in the water.
The film begins with holiday makers arriving by train and ferry to the famous Hook of Holland. It's fascinating to see how some folks literally set up 'camp' on the beaches, digging trenches and hoisting tents! The two girls rinsing the sand from their feet is particularly charming.
By the end of the 'roaring twenties', the bathing suit had evolved into more shapely body hugging swimsuits for women and swimming trunks for the men.
Filmed on the strands near the Hoek van Holland purportedly in January 1923 according to a publish date. However based on the styles, we think this was more likely made in 1921 or 1922 at the latest.
    AI Restoration:
    1. Cleaned noise artifacts
    2. Increased frame interpolation from 15 fps to 60 fps using Rife app.
    3. Increased resolution from 240p to 4000p.
    4. Applied color using Deoldify ( notebook available on Google Colab)
    5. Created ambient soundtrack.
Public domain licensed footage provided from the Beelden voor de Toekomst project.

People who were born in the 1920's saw a great deal of change and unrest in their lives, however it made them wonderful people to talk to. I learned more about the world I lived in from them in my earlier years than I did at school.

One of the dogs run off into a church ⛪ graveyard and when I caught up with her I found myself in front of a gravestone with the date 1st June 1974 (This is my birthday 🎂 day) on it. I was 12 years old at the time and miss reading the date I thought oh they didn't live long, then I suddenly realised that it was the date that they died on with the year of birth been 1900.
So to summarise on the day I began my life theirs ended. It made me realise that ever birthday day is also some else's death day.

What makes it special is that they didn’t film every moment of every day of their life. Not every meal was a photo. Most families probably had a handful of portraits, at best. That makes each capture so much more precious!!

I love these videos. People genuinely gave their complete undivided attention to everyday life. Before television's and phones. When a camera came by, people's eyes lit up. Today you point a camera at a kid, they won't strike a pose or intentionally do something cute because cameras are second nature now. Everyone's got one on their phone. So this was truly a golden era we'll never get back. Golden moments. Thank God someone preserved these moments

Everyone has cameras now but the physical film of tangible rolls are few, so if something happens to our power sources, then say the servers and computers that contain it all then we would be in the 50s and 60s again instantly, and ppl would freak out. I think a electo magnetic pulse could wipe out everything if ever large enough it can fry any electrical components. The Polaroids fade after years, so I'm not sure about hundreds but I think tangible things will come back in style either nostalgia or necessity

People just seem to be so much more connected to each other in simplistic form than they are today. They valued their relationships with each other more you could see, whether they were close or just friends. We have too much technology interfering between ourselves today and we become disconnected to each other‘s thoughts and needs. You can see people just liked to touch each other, which was wonderful. The innocence of this time is so overwhelming to see. Frankly, I think in many respects we have messed up so badly today. We need to learn to reconnect with each other on a human scale.

@Clement Maurel Drama much? Would you like to go live where the migrants have come from? Wouldn't you want to get the heck out as well, if it was you? How about family? Do you have any family you care for, or about? If they were in danger, wouldn't you try to get them and yourself to somewhere to maybe live, and for more than the next few moments? Yes...There are going to be problems when different groups of people mingle, and there's a few who do not appreciate the safeties offered...
Look around that's pretty much humans across the board. I'd have to write another fecking essay to even begin to respond to inevitable questions of the pros and cons of mosaic and melting pot cultures, and how to logically and sanely/humanely try to set up things so people can integrate into places without being obnoxious and the same for those "welcoming" the newcomers. PC culture and that crap has really messed up people trying to learn to get along. It should be about balance, not force(both sides). Laws should protect those who need protection, and to provide guidance as what not to do.
      I digress.
Do you have a roof over your head? Do you expect to wake up in the morning, in one piece and with your family in the same sort of shape? How about food to eat? Do you expect to have the same tomorrow? How about easy access to healthcare? Shopping? Police emergency and fire services? Roads that aren't bombed to snot with IED's on the side...
Our world is always in flux and right now, it's in overdrive. Populations are going to shift because of the "bijillion" crisis that we've made ourselves plus the everyday upheavals piled on top of that.
Get back to us when someone tries shipping you to a concentration camp in a box car, then pulls out your fillings on arrival, takes any valuables you have and any medical or prosthetic devices you might have been using. Next stop, a stylin ' tattoo and maybe a shower to "freshen up" after your trip...
Integration isn't easy. There are going to jerks on "both" sides who will whnge, and try to play the system and people for their own gain. Heaven help the gullible, ignorant, and naive who listen to these troublsome people.
The majority of people in exodus around the planet aren't going to stop moving, especially as places once productive become even less so, and until our climactic patterns settle down and we figure out how we're collectively going to sort this fiasco out, as best we can.
One day, you might be forced to up sticks and become one of those you disparge.
It's those who won't share, or want more than is reasonable, or who want special *laws or protections* not because they re quired, but to shove their weight around and mess with whoever "they" are having difficulties(euphemisum) with.
We are going to have to learn to get along, or sadly we humans really are going to be a flash in the pan in the history of life on this planet. I'd really like to see humans get our collective shit together and live up to our obvious potential. Earth will continue on and so will life, even if we don't, as long as we don't blow the planet apart withour nukes etc.
Sorry for the essay. Just tired of people who think they are hard done by when the people they are pointing fingers at are the ones who went through Hell. Hackles go up when that goes down...and then it starts...back and forth. Gratitude becomes resentment. Those who give sometimes give up when good intentions turn into a very bad teatime because people don't or won't change, and think that because they want something to be a certain way, it should be so and devil take the hindmost if one should disagree.
Perhaps modern humanity will get past it's Terrible Two Hundred thousands and learn to play nice...It's not going to happen as long as people seek ways to increase our divisions instead of realistically and humanely dealing with issues as they arise.
If not...well it's not like Earth hasn't seen a change in scenery, scenario, and supporting cast before. Life goes on but the cast and the show do change from time to time. If we learn to get along, stop wrecking the place and stop acting like a bunch of lager louts in general, we might be around long enough to grow into a species that 'Momma would be proud of".
      Cheers

When I said I wanted to go back in time, it’s not like I would treat it like some field day and be disrespectful or however you thought. I know things were way worse back then, but it’s the historical differences and how things happened to what they are now that intrigues me so much. @@desertpinevintage162 It's more than that. It's the same sense I get when I see old movies with stars who we know in hindsight are about to have something terrible happen to them IRL, and I want to reach into the screen and grab them by the shoulders and say, "don't get in that boat, Natalie!" or "get yourself into rehab, Phillip!" I look at these people and realize that they have no idea what's ahead. Prohibition just started, and they haven't begun to imagine how violent their society is about to get. In just 8 years they will have to endure a decade of the worst depression our country has ever known. By the time that baby we see is 23, he will be fighting in WW2, and did he make it back?
Of course, there will be happy times and joyful moments for them too. The whole panorama of life played out for them in their time, just as ours will in the 21st century. But watching these videos is like riding in a train at night, passing by homes that have their lights on, allowing us to see a brief moment in the lives of the people living there - sitting down to dinner, watching TV on the couch, folding laundry, playing with a dog. It's a reminder that we're all just trying to get through life as best we can, as did the people in the generation before us, and the people in the century before us, and the people who lived millenia ago.
So as much as I might want to reach into the screen and grab them by the shoulders to warn them of what's ahead, I also want to reach in and grab them in a hug, and just love them for their sheer humanity, and for being fellow travelers through time. I hope God blessed all of them.

Times WERE BETTER back then if you have that mindset instead of the terrible values most have today. To each his or her own but for me, back then seems better. The world was much larger & families closer.

That is an interesting comment-- now that you mention it, I'm thinking back to similar videos like this that I've seen and in those people are smiling and laughing even when they aren't doing something like dancing or playing games. And clearly these videos were not rehearsed. The person who took this footage was just filming the people as they were. Go to a beach today and just start filming people and I bet you that there would be few people laughing; at best they would be on their phones but pretty much everyone would have a skull on their face or would be complaining about something or yelling at the person 20ft over to turn down their music

I wish people were this carefree still. Now, everyone is too concerned if people are watching, or NOT watching more likely. They worry if their designer suit is a hit or not. And some dummy is usually drunk at the beach. I hope whoever remastered this has a job in the industry, because they are very talented.
