That's a fascinating story, and yes, that was absolutely the thinking at the time. We (Oregon Field Guide) looked at the grass good/ grass bad issue as part of a special we did on the Oregon Dunes, and pulled in a bunch of the old, original film that promoted the grass planting. Note: hey OPB can you update on the status of the strategic beach grass removal? If I recall correctly, the grass that was also threatening to eradicate the naturally occurring dunes area/habitat by Florence is supposed to be removed so the dunes can return to their original state. You know, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area - one of seven major national dune parks/preserves.
It is worth an update- this issue has evolved much over the years. Total grass eradication will never happen, but strategic removal is helping. Yay! Hopefully this method will be successful enough to be used to create other plover breeding places. Like another person, I wonder that the little plover may still be subject to the same amount of aerial predation. Is anyone addressing this issue? Thank you for bringing this project to the public's attention.
Poor babies. First, this is Washington and not Oregon. Washington is headed in many great directions concerning wildlife. Oregon is not. All shorebirds and sea mammals and fish no longer habitat, breed, birth on beaches nor do fish swim up creeks because of humans. We bring invasive plant species, dogs, development, vehicles, trash, and on and on. Did you know every creek that reaches the sea was full of spawning fish? Did you know beaches were full of birthing mammals? Did you know the beaches and skies and water were thick with life? Next time you go to a beach or creek or forest think about these things. GOD put you here to nurture and maintain all he creates. What have you done?
