With 179 stations, nine lines and over 2.3 billion users each year, the Tokyo Metro is the heart of Tokyo’s public transport system. This film goes behind the scenes to explore the mind-set, skill and technology behind its astonishing reliability and punctuality. The Tokyo Metro is so punctual that people set their watches by the arrival of the trains; if a train is more than a minute late, the driver has to make a personal apology. This film explores the reasons behind the Metro’s reputation for running on time, to reveal a long-established culture focused on avoiding failure through contingency planning for any event - from terrorism to earthquakes - and the introduction of new technology to improve safety and systematic preventative maintenance. However, we reveal the key to the Metro’s efficiency is exhaustive training for its station staff and drivers, who are trained to drive at precise speeds even if the technology fails.

They forgot to mention that the stations will issue "late slips" if the train is late. After all, your boss is unlikely to believe you if you tell him that the train was late.

The whole culture is what makes this possible. There are many well developed subway and commuter rail systems in other parts of the world, but the people who use them are often the cause of delays. An example. I was commuting to Copenhagen last week, when my train got stuck at a station for 10 minutes. The reason? A guy with a bicycle wanted to get on the train, but it was almost at full capacity. So how does he cope with this situation? Simple. He blocked the door with his bicycle, so the train couldn't leave and stood there looking offended. Because if HE couldn't get on, then the train was not allowed to go anywhere. After 10 minutes of yelling back and forward, some of the passengers finally gave up, left the train, and let him in so we could continue, Ah, the beauty of the new western "me" culture....

The other problem, is the fact that no staff member stepped and stopped him, why? That staff member? Doesn't exist anymore, it's all automated, so no staffer would show up and shoo the idiot with the bike away.
And that, is a reason why the Japanese public transit works so well, they are willing to employ however many it requires.

There are timetables for each NYC Subway line, and to be fair, the MTA does a pretty good job of keeping up with it.
The problem with the NYC Subway ultimately comes down to us, the riders. We treat the trains like shit, dump trash everywhere, piss on the seats, hold the doors open for people, jump on the tracks for a selfie, etc. Japanese people have a lot more respect for society, which is a major component to their on-time performance.
Of course, the MTA sucks, and doesn't give a shit about on-time performance, but not all of it is their fault.

When the Philippine MRT trains break down (which is like twice a week) all they say is "Sorry for the inconvenience" and you still pay full price for wherever you've stopped.
It was maintained by the Japanese for 15 years with no hitches whatsoever and running at 60km/h. Then the government decided it was having enough of that and changed to inexperienced maintenance providers (one of which was incorporated only two months before it was given the contract without even bidding). Now it can only run at 45km/h with weekly disruptions and at least 3 accidents with injuries for the last 5 years. And now the new trains they bought, which totals around 76M USD, are found to be unusable.

    • @DinoSarma

NYC metro has four times as many stations, runs 24/7, and have several lines that are redundant in Manhattan. If /one/ line shuts down for maintenance, you're fine in Manhattan, but you're screwed with some lame-ass shuttle bus to replace it in the outer boroughs. A shuttle bus that has to contend with the atrocious traffic that's ubiquitous. The fact that they manage to run the trains as well as they do, for the cost that they charge is a wonder.

I ride this station everyday. It’s the first station and runs every 2 mins. First few Passengers who line up can seat. Those in the rope can choose to ride standing after rope releases or line up for 6 mins to be able to seat. Trains run alternative from both side of platform so while first train with full passengers prepares to go, the other train on opposite side starts allowing passengers to ride.
