If the wind picked up, you would have been forced to take down the tarp. That's why an extension To the living area may come in handy.

Is the water from rain coming through the "only mesh" window?to the front part of tent.

If you leave it open while it's raining, water comes in from the window, but when it's closed, there is no problem.
