- Swami Nityanand Giri interviewed Swami Nirvanananda in Hindi in May 2001 about how he came to Ma Anandamayi, and his experiences thereafter. English subtitles. Translation from Hindi by Sanatkumar Dave, Madhav Dave, Sw Nirgunananda and Sw Nityanand.
I have taken Diksha from Swami Nirvananandaji in Kolkata, Ma Anandamayee Ashram,Agarpara,on Maghi Purnima day of 3rd Feb,2015, and I have started my Seva in this Ashram for life long as a Devotee of Ma Anandamayee. My Aunt (masi) Annapurna Banerjee was a Bhog Sevika to Ma Anandamayee and did her Seva for life long.
Pranaam Swamiji. I was lucky enough to have His company for about 15 mins in 2010 / 11 in Kankhal and He came and sat beside me before Ashram dinner during mounabrata. But before that last diksha He stood for a brief moment when I was distributing sweets after the evening prayer but He didn't take. But I was not knowing Who He was but I was very very attracted towards the immense peace and Godly presence. That time I was doing research on environment and environmental values from Hong Kong University. And I was baffled by lots of confusions and questions yet trying to observe silence from the mind. But before I could speak anything just after the mounabrata, He stood up and went away. I was wondering Who was He by His very gracious presence and like the Santa since then and then in 2013 or 14, I in Agarpara, Kolkata, while leaving the Ashram after a few days stay, I came to know when I asked some sadhu ji about Him stating What is the name of the Sadhu ji who looked like Rishi Aravinda with complete white long beard and came to know His name. And well, He was staying upstairs but I was not able to meet Him and know further about Him. Yet, His presence kept in my heart so much and that it is still today. Then before leaving the mortal coil, one morning in Dhanbad in 2020, during Corona time in winter His message came to me that He is being taken by a chapter flight to Haridwar for His illness. I saw the pictures and videos posted by one devotee and thus could His final Darshan. He was the full Brahma ji.

Kankhal haridwar mai ek place hai . Haridwar railway station per aa kar auto walo ko bolo kankhal Jana hai toh auto apko kankhal le jayega

I began to watch this video with great interest, at first, because I am deeply interested in reading and knowing about Swamis, sages, munis, Yogis and, in general people who are spiritual, and also people who have attained "Atma Jnana": men like Shree Ramana Maharshi. So I listened to this "Swami" Nirvanananda. And the more I listened, the more astonished I was, and then incredulous, and then I was deeply shocked. At 28.21 minutes in this video he said : "We all used to eat Ma's Prasad (he was referring to Anandamayi Ma ) at night. Usually the sacrifice is of an animal, and therefore the Prasad is meat". The interviewer, to her credit, asked probing and intelligent questions, like : "Why do you have bali (animal sacrifice) ?" He gives an absurd answer : "The significance of bali is that one's Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh are sacrificed."! ( He was referring to the six enemies ( our shastras call them Shadripu) of an ordinary man; Mada and Maatsarya being the other two; a total of six undesirable emotions, considered as our enemies. ) I wish to say to this Nirvanananda: Sacrifice your desires, anger, greed, infatuation, pride and jealousy, if you wish, without killing these poor creatures. Do not harm them, and practice Ahimsa. It becama obvious to me that this man does not understand even the most fundamental tenet of Sanaatana Dharama (Hindu religion): Ahimsa Paramo Dharmaha". Hindu religion is based on Ahimsa; One should not kill or cause harm to a living creatures of god, much less slaughter and eat them! What he said is most shocking and deplorable. A couple of other devotees of Anandamayi Ma - "Swami" Vijayananda, for example - have also said the same thing : That both Anandamayi Ma and her devotees used to eat meat as "Prasad", after sacrificing animals!. The great sage Patanjali has condemned the practice of ritualistic slaughter of animals and eating them. The irony is this swami refers to Patanjali, at 5.06 minutes in this video. But it is obvious that these people (followers of Anandamayi Ma)pay only lip service to Patanjali, without putting into practice what Patanjali said. A great shame.

+Yesh Prabhu I think there has been a bit of a misunderstanding here. Back in the 1930s there was a tradition of animal sacrifice in Bengal, and if one reads the literature one finds out that Sri Ma was able to move the devotees away from these ancient practices. Ma's swamis and Brahmacharis/Brahmacharinis subsequently participated in a very strict diet/life style (known as Suddha Sattva) which totally excluded meat, fish, eggs, onion, garlic etc and that also meant for many cooking their own food, and using ingredients/ utensils etc that had no contact whatsoever with meat, fish, eggs. In the girls school, when they were caught up in the Uttarkashi floods not so long ago , they refused any form of food/water that was not suitably pure, in spite of great difficulties.
+SriRam108 I traveled to India twice in the 1970's visiting Sri Ma. I have one question as to identity. What about people living in cold of Russia and north pole...where there is only wine and flesh can help survive .....and how about killing of the animals and germs every day while taking shower...and so if you keep the path little open and easy then those who have the tamasic tendency will also be able to continue on the path of self evolution...

I am not much familiar with many Sadhu, Sant lok. But this interview, I kept on hearing at a stretch, at one go until last. Hearing Swamiji's conversation, joy sprouted from within and I remained spell bound!
This man has 0 talent, 0 skills, no income. He travels in 3rd class compartment train. So sad. But this man has a pure pure heart. And I believe this is the reason Mother loved him.
He is not self-realized unfortunately. How difficult and how rare it is.

Can someone explain why Ma and others wouldn't eat the food he cooked? Because he still eats foods from others? I don't unterstand this
Ma would respond to an individual situation. In this case whilst, at that time he was a high caste Brahmin, he had been staying previously on a student campus where anything went diet-wise. Later he was to be Ma's pujari (she must have known), performing all the big ashram pujas, feeding her bhog etc so he had to be a shuddhacharya (they cook for themselves) , means comply with all the strict purity rules. But prior to that he did not have a sacred thread, do his sandhya, recite gayathri etc. So this situation caused him to say to Ma that he would take the sacred thread and comply with all these restrictions. Ma would never impose but this way he volunteered it. Listen a couple of times to pick up all the points. It is all Ma's lila, which it is difficult to comprehend unless you have experienced it, and unless you have moved in the circles of orthodox Hinduism. Ma herself was beyond all this, but these rules were encouraged by her, so that the orthodox people surrounding her would not feel compromised. Hope that gives an idea.
