RIP Jim Steinman. What an awesome songwriter he was. Jim wrote with a background in musical theatre so that's where you are hearing the "drama" in this. He wrote all the best stuff for Meatloaf but also wrote some great tunes like this one for Bonnie, Air Supply's "Making Love Out of Nothing at All", Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", the Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion" and "More", Barry Manilow's "Read 'Em and Weep", Celine Dion's cover of "It's All Coming Back to Me Now".

The entire video is a dream sequence…however, the song was written in the point of view of someone who use to be human and now recently became a vampire….this was told by Jim Steinman, as it was the idea behind the song.

Canadian Rory Dodd is the male vocalist you hear throughout this song. He sang a number of Jim Steinman’s songs and did backing vocals on some of Meatloaf’s recordings as well. Just an amazing singer, who also had a successful career as a session vocalist.

Jim Steinman actually wrote this for a musical about vampires. The idea never fully manifested and he gave the song to Bonnie Tyler to record. If you listen to the lyrics it all makes sense- “Once upon a time there was light in my life, but now there’s only love in the dark…” I have a feeling that’s where the idea for the glowing eyed children may have stemmed from.

According to Rolling Stone Magazine it was vampires from outer space, good call, Joel. In the eighties there was two types of love, one with the light on in bed and one with the light off in the dark. I never tried it in the dark myself.

I like watching you react to more original people like this. If you like truly original female voices, I don't recall you doing a Kate Bush unless I'm just drawing a blank. Joni Mitchell also uses her voice in really interesting ways. Fleetwood Mac would fit in there too. But if you like the grit then you need Janis Joplin. She even has a great duet with Tom Jones. It's all genius.

  • @RajBlake7

The song was penned by Jim Steinman, he who wrote Meatloaf's catalogs, and it was he who sang the male lines. As with all his greatest songs, it was pure rock opera (which I love). Bonnie Tylers voice was perfect, it added a depth that I don't think any other singer could. All in all, one marvelous and one off song !
