I understand why people are hesitant about wearing body protectors, especially dressage riders, but I don't get why some people still don't want to wear proper hats, when they can be the difference between life and death. There are modern hats which are as lightweight and comfortable as bicycle helmets.

A good quality hat that fits correctly is a life saver. Dressage riders are as likely to part company with their horse as show jumpers or cross country riders. Two falls from a young hot blood in walk in an indoor arena within 5 minutes of each other & another from a school master in canter half pass, outdoor arena. In all 3 falls the hats saved serious injury. With today’s “looks good” combined with “super safety technology” we have no room to be dismissive of their safety value. Please 🙏 riders stay safe. It is silly to put glitter and modern designs on the helmet for competion. Not elegant with the old fashioned Jackets as the hads were indeed. But safety first.
I think people who don’t compete at high levels like to have a “smart” looking hat that colour matches their show jackets
