I have modified a few sponge filters with air stones. Since I use a bag when cleaning my sponge filters, not a big issue about perhaps them falling off the air line. Wish I were local, would enjoy having the Midas. Good luck with finding him a home with someone that will take care of and enjoy him. I'm sure there is someone. Thanks for sharing another way to modify filters.
Best tip I've had in years. I went from clean to 3D over night. I had a small package (5) of those fittings that I used for something long ago and they were unused in the bottom of my aquarium findings drawer. I immediately changed over based on your advice. WOW what an epiphany. Incredible improvement overnight. I use large flow/large cell sponges; your're right about small cell, they clog too much. So thanx for the info. It really makes a difference in my aquarium. No worries any more with clogged air-stones nor the unnecessary expense in buying them.
The Whisper air pumps all come with a valve to attach to the tubing where you can regulate the air by simply turning the dial. I have my sponge filter at the sweet spot where there's not much noise or water splashed upward but the bubbles are still powerful.
I never even knew you were supposed to use airstones. I always just put the airline into the body through a nipple, sometimes putting media in the tube but usually just bare with sponge on either arm. Works fine. Can order a preassembled and sealed system for under 5 with sponges and just replace it with your own larger ones. It does something to diffuse the bubbles before the outlet and it even works with the outlet emerged to reduce flow . I’ve seen them in stores too
I use a clog-free air stone in my sponge filter. I like the more uniform look, it is a bit quieter, and happy with the surface agitation. The cichlids like swimming through it as well.
That’s a great tip honestly. Apt of the aquatop sponge filters don’t utilize air stones anymore they just have a plastic tube that runs to the bottom of the filter. The rep said it had to do with causing larger bibles which in turn caused more suction along with more agitation like you stated making the filters truly long lasting and highly effective
Yes like a syringe plunger, one big bubble pulls more water through to displace the rising air. The smaller bubbles allow water to go around instead of plunging effectively
What I've read is the opposite, many smaller bubbles interacts with way more water than a couple big bubbles, and thus smaller bubbles create more flow.
The way I see it is you just increased the air flow which is filtering at a higher rate, which is also better if your fish desire that flow... Good stuff, I've been researching on sponge filters because others have gotten so expensive these days. Thank you again even thou im 4 years late on this video lmao
Control valve fixes the issue with back-pressure as it allows excess to carb out. Hissing if it is an issue can be fixed with a short strip of airline on the release. But I like the idea of not being dependent on something that basically requires constant disposal & replacement.
New sub, I really like what you talk about in this channel. Last Sunday I was trying to get my sponge filter to work, I had the same issue and glad you showed this method, will try it. :)
I keep only 2-3g aquariums and I have a lot of luck with mini sponge filters. At 2" wide at the base and a mere 2" to the top of the sponge and 4" to the top of the outlet tube there is no room for a standard sized air stone inside the housing. I agree that fine bubbles are probably no better than big bubbles however, I find finer bubbles more visually appealing. And there are probably airstones tiny enough to work but I don't want to pay for them. So I took a 1" length of tubing, sealed the end with silicone, then punctured the length with a needle. Nice makeshift air diffuser.
Great 👍 modification on your sponge filter, and if your viewers/ subs go with this, they needn’t by air stones (ever) again, because there a pain when they clogg, never mind potentially damaging your air pump. 👍🏴
Hello, I was helping a friend make a sponge filter. I came up with idea and it works amazing. I put a toilet paper holder on the top. The size at the top is slightly restricted and it has way more suction and pressure. Just break the holder in half and stick it on the existing tube.
I use my sponge filter as it came and it works great. just cleaned the sponge with some of my left over water change water and that seems to help a ton.
I gave up my sponges for a bit. Was a breeding ground for unwanted snails. Now that I have goldfish again, instead of mollies, I don't see anymore snails. I guess the goodish eat every bit of the food, leaving none for the snails.
Only sponge filters? Shall I put another HOB in my tank? If sponge filter is sufficient, I think I will be able to save few bucks from my electric bill…
i love your videos can you please answer a question i have? i run the sponge filter when the light is off in my fish tank so it runs 16 hours will the bacterias die when stop working?
There’s those air stones I can’t remember the name but their the layered rainbow ones and they let bubbles out different layers at a time to make all kinds of surface movement have you tried that ?
I have panda corys and ghost shrimp cleaning the sponge filter. Will I still need to clean it. It seems to have great flow and not dirty at all after 3 weeks. Thanks. Bristly nose pleco is doing some too.
Excuse my ignorance but how would this help a sponge filter that hasn’t been modified with an air stone? I was going to mod mine with a stone but then I saw your video
Great idea! However as a fan of your channel, I would appreciate a video on the process that led to you “catching sponge filters on fire”!! Now THAT would be a video!!! 😂
I bought my sponge filter set up and air stone from Aquarium Co-OP several months ago and my airstone (Ziss brand) hasn't clogged nor have I ran into any other problem yet. I would love to know your opinion concerning a low cost light for my planted 20gal aquarium. I need something cheap but good quality to grow my plants. :)
Have you noticed a difference in water flow between the two. If not I’m all for simplifying my air setup. I try to run my tanks as simply as possible and when my stones crap out I’ll just ditch them
I doubt u still have that Midas. But, I've been searching for a beautiful grown midas for my 75G. It's running with no fish for months. Can u ship fish properly? Thanks let me know, Mike. January/2021
Hey Chris, i dont know if you read these or not but i dont how else to get ahold of you. But im from MN as well Winthrop actually. Just south of Hutchinson. Saw your quality aquitics video and by far my favorite place. As of right now we about 20 tanks and some big tanks we have actually bought from quality aquitics the owner. Would like to get ahold of you somehow besides youtube commit
Im soo confused as to why u didnt attach it to the air line attach part in the top? Like why stick it straight though the hole and go through all that extraness? I took the airstone off one of mine but left it hooked up the same just no air stone and it worked fine. Or do u not know that that is what that middle connection in the top piece is for? This make no sense at all. Also in a tank with high waste fish or crayfish the filters will clog all the way to where no air passes pretty often if never cleaned... i think it just needed cleaned
I have noticed that the Sponge filters with the center core that most people remove seem to have less draw of debris with the core removed. Has anyone else notice this as well?
@PalmerAquatics I'm not not talking about the lift tube. For instance, the aquatop sponge filter has a little black core that some remove to add an air stone.
I like using airstones. But if you want less maintenance, than this is better. Airstones provide finer bubbles and more uplift but can clog or need to be cleaned. This method uses less maintenance but less uplift decreasing how good your sponge works.
I also use sponge filters and I have never used an air stone, also the word argue is a very aggressive word, I like to have discussions about things, come to mutual agreement or disagreement.
I would never use a sponge filter, thrown it out in the garbage. The best and cheapest filter is sobo top filter. It looks like you have an old fashioned aquarium setup and then you should have problems with nitrates to.

I've never used air stones in my sponge filters. I can control the bubbles with a gang valve
I like air stones it is quiet and the water doesn't splash like with the big bubbles. But that just me.Great video thanks
Yes smaller bubbles more uplift more cleaning.

Yeah. The bottoms of those will clog though 🤪
Palmer Aquatics oh really? I’ve had mine for 3 years lol. Hopefully they stay unclogged lol
I use the ones from aquarium co-op, along with their never clog air stones.
Same here. I have two
Yes like a syringe plunger, one big bubble pulls more water through to displace the rising air. The smaller bubbles allow water to go around instead of plunging effectively

Good idea. What I need to know is where'd you get those bad ass scissors. Obviously the way they cut not the local dollar store.

This is exactly the solution I've been looking for! I have one of those small spong filters. Thanks!
Nah dude, that's brilliant. Good tip for people using that style of sponge filter.

Hey, do you have a picture of video of this by chance? I'm super interested in little DIY hacks like this.
I could not sure how to send on the comments. Really just took the larger diameter tube and slide over the Hikari brand tube. Nearly perfect fit.
@@scottyboySkater do you mean replacing the existing uplifting tube with a bigger and longer tube for stronger suction?
I use my sponge filter as it came and it works great. just cleaned the sponge with some of my left over water change water and that seems to help a ton.
Give it some time. The air stone will clog
Went to my LFS and Petco today and I was browsing sponge filter stiff and straight up thought about your videos haha
Love the flowerhorn miss having them.

Can you do a video on the “starting them on fire” mod? Thanks

Think it’s a good idea you get good air flow to the sponge so it will draw more water in to it 👍
Love that idea man will have to try it

How often do you clean your sponge filters?? Once a month? I use air stones inside the sponge filter!!!!
Nice edits and format on this video, good info too, Thanks

i have a sponge filter with a course sponge .. can i change it to one that is finer ?

I would use the Aquaneat lights. Cheapest and best bang for your dollar. Here is a link:

How many years before your air stones get clogged on average? just wondering.
Chriss are the best lol
Thanks 👍

Much more movement without air stones!
Cool tip. I like it.
No air stones for me. Never ran them that way personally
Very good idea
Love this, thanks

Definitely bigger bubbles are better. Airstone is just an esthetic thing.
Nice hack Chris.
Are you just giving that fish away ?
The Midas? Yes!
No arguments with you here as long as water is pulled through the sponge then it will be effective regardless of what you use
Looks good
You should breed flowerhorn
Where in Minnesota u at ?
Just remove the bottom weight (use it bare bottom), instead put some weight on top of sponge. Filtration efficiency will increase by 35-40%
yeah if setting on fire helps ill try anything once
yeah i do the same thing when the stone clogs
“I just had an obstacle of overcoming air stones” 😂
How is the shop coming
Video coming soon!
Palmer Aquatics Nice
I have noticed that the Sponge filters with the center core that most people remove seem to have less draw of debris with the core removed. Has anyone else notice this as well?
Removing the lift tube lessens the pressure of pull into sponge filter. I suggest leaving the lift tube

Bro I watch your videos love em but this is downgrading sponge filters. Air stones are quiter.
What the difference between this and using air stone?
