    This is quite excellent! I too was absolutely overwhelmed by all the different tools and settings available in Darktable. Since I'm not a professional photographer, watching you explain what the settings do and then getting to practice them myself is the perfect learning path for me. Now - as for a new tutorial: Could you produce a tutorial on how to stitch together photos to create a vertical panorama? I think that would be wildly popular!
    Thanks again!!

    I watched your video again, this time writing down each module you used, and the basics of how you used it. I've only been using Darktable for two days. It is gradually starting to come together.
    (The single biggest thing I would like to find, is where to download the Darktable plugin that sends images off to Nik Collection, then retrieves them after I'm finished. The only way I could figure how to do so, was to export them (had to learn that too), then import them into Lightroom, then do some more editing in Lightroom because I understand it better, then go to "Photos" > Edit in Nik Collection. Nik edited a copy, then sent it back to Lightroom. I finally exported the images and sent them off by mail.
    As long as I'm asking, eventually I need to find out how to add a "watermark", but honestly, I mostly just need to get familiar with the tools you showed in this video, so I can use them comfortably.)

    Great video! Now that we all have more free time, I am finally learning darktable and your videos are a big help. I would like to see a video on how to move/copy my darktable settings (preferences, presets, favorite modules, and collections) from one PC to another. I work mainly on my desktop, but would like to have the same settings on a laptop. I can't find anyone who made a video on this topic. I tried to copy my test folder (with my rw2 and xmp files) to my laptop and then import that folder as a new collection, but it didn't keep the edits I made.
    I recently inherited some camera equipment and I am learning how to use it properly. I have a GH4 and GH5 plus 6 lenses. Your videos are a big help. In dt 3.0.1 the GH5 is now supported and the lens correction module makes a huge difference with my 12-35mm lens images, thanks for the tips!

    • @RicoResolves
      @RicoResolves  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great camera and lens choice! I have the GH5 and a Leica 12-60mm, Panasonic 35-100mm, the Panasonic 25mm, Panasonic 12-32mm and a 7Artisans 7,5mm! I also have a Panasonic G80. For a pocket camera, I have the Canon G7X Mark II. I'm glad my tutorials help. I could make a video on that, though it's pretty easy. You just need to copy and paste all the folders and files and then redirect to them in darktable settings. Let me know if that works!

      @richardinmontreal396 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RicoResolves When we inherited the knapsack with the cameras, I didn't really know how good the equipment was. I asked a friend to look at it and his jaw dropped.
      Along with GH4 and GH5 bodies, I got the 12-35 f2.8 (my favorite!), a 35-100m,m f2.8 (my next favorite) and haven't had time to try the others: 100-300m f4.0-5.6, a LEICA macro (I will test this out soon), a fisheye 7-14mm f2.8 and a prime 20mm f1.7. The store sold my late father-in-law everything.
      When I first took photos, I was disappointed at focus. I thought it was me, but I read the 400page PDF manual and it wasn't me. My wife's cheap cell phone took better pictures. I did some research and found Panasonic fixed the firmware in v2.1 and now in v2.2, it works better. I found a link and learned there was now a v2.4 firmware upgrade. He had version 1.3 (original). I got excited and updated my cameras. Then I went for another outing and while the images were better, they still weren't sharp. More research said to update the firmware in the lens. Who would have thought of that! Anyway, once I updated everything NOW the images are amazing!
      I'm surprised that the store would sell my father-in-law an amazing kit (around $8000 Cdn) but not offer to update things for him or at least TELL him that it must be done.
      Now there is a never version 2.6 (GH5, the GH4 is still at v2.7)
      av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/download/index.html
      No one ever mentions this great tip to periodically check with the manufacturer's web site and look for firmware updates for BOTH your camera body and the lenses!

    If I can make a suggestion, many people, like me, are very new to this stuff. It would be nice if you put all the editing controls in the place they're at when I first install the program. Either that, or make a short video showing what you put where (and how) that I could watch first.
    I watched it first. Now I'm going to make a list of the tools you used. Then I need to find out where they are. I know about moving things into my "favorites", but I barely know what any of them are, let alone how to find them.
    It was great to watch you do what you did, and I will try to do the same on my own image, while following what you have done.
    (I wish there was a RESET button that puts everything back in it's place with a new installation.)

    • @RicoResolves

      Hey Mike, thank you for your extensive feedback. I appreciate that. If I'm understanding you correctly, you're talking about shortcuts that I use correct? It would be nice if you could do a back to the basics tutorial on this software, the mechanics of it, I know the concepts since I have dealt with Lightroom for years now, but Darktable has a totally different interface, it doesn't even have the menu bar at the top with the undo/redo buttons. A suggestion for a basic tutorial would be to edit an image from start to finish, this is how I fetch a file from a memory card and bring into darktable, this is here all the editing tools are located, this is the first step in the work flow, this is what this step does, this is where you can find the tool, and so on until the end where you show how to save the file, how to export it and all that. A complete run down of a basic image edit, just to show case the interface so people can get familiar and learn where everything is. The biggest frustration of Darktable is that nothing is displayed, everything is hidden, that makes it very difficult for someone trying to start and discover. There are no menus on display on the interface.

    Hey man great video. I have an idea for a video that I know would help me out right now. Well two. First one would be resizing for instagram. Or how to get tall vertical photo to fit in the instagram 4:5 ratio I think it it is. The second is how to apply a certain base edit to similar photos in a series of photos. I went out with a friend and shot 300 photos and many are the same place/lighting.

    What's the difference between base curve and tone curve in terms of functionality?

    • @RicoResolves
      @RicoResolves  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! The base curve comes with a mimic of manufacturers curves. The tone curve allows you to adjust the tonality of the pixels. The base curve is obsolete now. You can use different modules instead of the base curve. It still gets applied automatically when opening a RAW in darktable. Basically to show a preprocessed .jpg

    I gave up on Darktable. In win 10 I can't select stars, I've lost the scroll bar for the row pictures in the developer....it just disappeared and I can't find a way to get it back!, click on stars in the developer and the entire picture is deleted from the catalog. I just ended up putting Lightroom 4 back on my computer.
    And RawTherapee seems to have a lot of power but honestly, when I want to simply change the contrast of a picture, I can't figure out which one of the myriad of contrast settings I should use....same with highlights and a bunch of other settings. Wishing there was some button or setting for something like a "Simplified" mode or something.
    I have to say that lightroom 4 circa 2012 or so does everything I need to get a picture well developed. If I need to make more modifications, I will load that up into Affinity Photo or something. And I much prefer the simple slider feature for the HSL set of controls than what I can find in either DarkTable or RawTherapee.
    That said, standalone Lightroom on disc without subscription is no longer available and I gave up on renting software/subscription. And a lot of the "pay once" program replacements are stupendously expensive for what the average person....including many, many photographers actually need imo. I mean Lightroom was something like $100 before the subscription service began and now replacements are $200, $300 or more! That is just crazy for a moderate developer and digital manager IMO.

    • @RicoResolves
      @RicoResolves  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, thank you for replying! Sorry to hear that darktable doesn't suit your needs! Try reinstalling it, see if it works better. I'm using Windows 10 and the program works fine. I've never tried affinity photo or rawtherapee.
