  • Sylt is stormy sea, endless beach and wild dune landscape. But Sylt is also one of the most popular German holiday destinations. In the high season, there are up to 100,000 guests on the island, with just 20,000 inhabitants. Lars is a lifeguard and has one of the most beautiful jobs in the republic: he works on the fashionable beach of Kampen, where the chic and the ordinary citizen come close together because you can hardly tell them apart in swimming trunks or Adam's costume. In the mornings before work, he goes fishing for mackerel in the summer. Whether fried, pickled or smoked, Lars could eat fresh mackerel every day.

When you think of Sylt and food, the first thing that comes to mind is upscale gastronomy. There are several star chefs on the island and several excellent restaurants. Not least because of this, there are still local food producers who can produce high-quality goods thanks to the restaurants. Be it Galloway cattle, their own geese, eggs, milk or seafood. The Sylt oyster is a real brand product, as is the Sylt mussel, which is even highly traded in Belgium. In summer, the large schools of mackerel pass by the island and the mostly private anglers enrich their menu in this way.

Lars Lunk and his wife Maren are true Sylt residents and thus a minority on their island. Since their two children have left home for good, they enjoy their freedom. They like to cook a lot or take their camper van to the island's lonely bays in the evening. A holiday at home. Because something makes Sylt unique: 30 kilometres of western beach, where the sun regularly sinks blood-red in the summer. A bit cheesy, but still cool!

Gotta try the oysters with spinach and cheese. You get oysters baked with some cheesy stuff on seafood buffets on the west coast of the US (and of course in Las Vegas), but it's too much cheese for my taste. We usually grab some baking oysters at the local oyster farm and toss some garlic butter on them before throwing them on the grill or just toss them on the grill closed and wait until they open before putting garlic butter on. Very yummy.

I've loved these wocomo videos for years, but I couldn't remember the name for a while- lost my computer a while back and the history files. Hard to understand how you all just have 190 likes on this episode. I thought it was wonderful!

This is the most germanic area I can even think of... where norse, german, frisian and more meet on the north sea
