I could make a strong argument that these two shows, especially June 23rd, are the best they ever did. The boys were jazzy, tight and crisp. Don't know why they never played Let It Rock again. supurb China Doll. Ship of Fools and the jamming intro to it is so nice and mellow. All around an awesome 6 and a half hours of the most creative, awe-inspiring music human beings have ever made.

@Jeff Rogers it's something about that Cornell show but I saw them in Chicago that spring and then 6 or 7 shows in 78, and another 3 shows in winter of 79.
Every show was as good as or better than the last. The shows at the Uptown Theater in the winter, spring and fall of 78 we're every bit as good as their spring 77 shows. And all four shows in 1976 at the auditorium theater were just as good. I really don't know why they picked out that spring tour of 77. There's a thing on TH-cam where they talk to bunch of those kids that went to the Cornell show in 77 like 40 years later. They all sound as if they were abducted by aliens and reprogrammed from being dorky nerds into dorky deadheads. It's pretty funny.
Got to say it was pretty nice to be a Grateful Dead fan in those days in Chicago. I went to at least 10 Dead shows over a two and a half year time span without ever having to leave town. In the summer of 76 they played at the auditorium theater in Chicago. The auditorium's acoustics are perfect.
I don't know how any Grateful Dead show could be better than those shows at the auditorium.
      If it actually happened.
It all seems like it was just a dream.

Hearing these concerts again 50 years later is such an unbelievable trip. I drove from LA to Miami like a madman to make them but I did. Went with my brother and 3 (I think) great friends. Hard to remember who was at each show but the music never never fades. The GD had a lot of great shows in '74 but these were 2 of the best.

    • @freelife1234

Alot of recordings from the 70s were circulating on tapes in my generation as a teen during the early 80s. We were just getting started. Unfortunately the later 80s scene evolved with a growing measure of people that were attending for purposes other than great music and fellowship.
I quit the scene by 87 and did not listen to much after 89. Like you, I found a treasure in listening to some shows decades later.
Always thankful for the tapers. My preference has always been audience recordings. (sometimes a matrix!)
BTW please download the recording if not already done (this platform of sharing is always in danger of deletion by YT due to copyright strikes)

These shows are great, but I can't imagine trying to select the best, of the several dozen shows I was at, between 1970 and 1977. Trying to pick their best ever is a fool's errand. This was not very long after their Europe '72 tour and, as I recall, it was better than some shows I attended then, but not as good as others. I think it makes more sense to compare how they did the same song differently at different times, in different venues. Even there, because they didn't construct a strict set list and learn to play it as well as possible, the same way every show, there are often segments or riffs of one version I love, as well as a different take on the same (or some other) part of the same song, done differently on another night.
In the name of full disclosure, I should admit that nearly 50 years has had some effect on my memory, but not as much as the fact that I was ALWAYS tripping at a Dead show. I believe that helped me to be "fully in the moment," which enhanced my enjoyment of the shows. Now, all these years later, I have no regrets at all, however it might have been nice if I had kept my head clearer for a couple shows, so my memories, now, were a little sharper.

    • @thebishop1095
      @thebishop1095 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I've seen them tripping & also straight as a board. My memories of the ones at which I was sober are the foggiest of all! Saw them a couple times after heroic doses of mushrooms & experienced such exquisite beauty it was almost painful, if that makes any sense.

I've never been to a show, but do have a few favorites, shiniest one for me's Portland OR Springer's Inn '70.. I had about a 5th generation tape of it and oft would flip after China Cat and listen to Alligator, both extremely tight and snippy tempo takes.

Definitely radiating some warmth for this almost homeless head tonight as I'm riding a Metro train through DC on my way to VA, to a ladies house that I pay to stay there daily. Maybe be homeless again soon. Idk. But at least I got good tunes to hear. Freedoms just another word for nothing left to do/lose. And once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

Like all great Dark Stars, this one cannot be classified. Not rock, not jazz. Even fusion is an inexact label because none of the great 70s fusion bands sound like this. Only label that really works here is "Masterpiece." Even without the Spanish Jam this is an unbelievable work of art. Throw that killer Spanish Jam in and it is indescribable. I only know of 3 other Stars that are this perfectly realized from start to finish, with every single note an absolute winner: Live Dead, Wembley, and Kesey's Farm. Oh, and probably the best US Blues ever. And how inspired is that? A rockin blues song to help you come down, or back, from whereever it was that you were for the previous 23 minutes. Nobody ever did anything like this before -- or since.
