    @sarah His purpose isn't to make fun of it. If a considerable number of people are feeling disillusioned by national day songs, then perhaps there is a problem to solve.

    Ok there seems to be alot of people disagreeing with the video or saying the songs are fine. Let me just chime in that for me, even as a kid in primary school, having these songs ehoved down our throats repeatedly at high volume, even if they were fine at first, we sure became sick and bloody tired of them after awhile. So imagine how it was if you started out already not liking the song. Sure some are fine and perhaps nice even, but then the lyrics completely turn me off from the song. For the most part, these songs just feel like a pathetic attempt at saying: "eh, yall very proud right? RIGHT? Singapore did good or something so you should feel proud and strive to achieve more and more. Yes yes we very united yes good good" or something along those lines and it just feels very fake and seems like a facade to show to other countries that we are very happy and united. It's kind of bullshit so... I don't know where I'm going with this so bye.

    I totally support what u say. Since late 1990s ndp songs are all about change, future, dreams, we're gonna get there someday blah blah. I mean, we are celebrating singapore "Birthday". Supposed to celebrate what singapore is NOW in all its glory. I hope they start doing NDP songs about Singapore NOW rather than about Singapore future. Isn't that's what celebrating birthdays are for? For what you are NOW?

    I think Tosh NDP rap in 2017 is a good example. He stated Singapore's achievement such as "They said we never make it, but here we are" and "Since 1965, we've been raising the bar ", but it's such a pity it's not an official ndp song

    tbh my fav ndp songs were the ones when I was in primary school cuz my school would play ndp songs during recess and because of that I learned the ndp song easily and actually enjoyed it, a small anecdote - once my whole cohort sang like one ndp song together and it was quite heart warming. Anyway ever since after prisch ndp songs were :-/, and now this year 2018 it was a remake of an old ndp song which is pretty cool I guess but idk. Now singapore not only has Singaporeans, but also much more foreigners compared to before, so it would be quite difficult to make a song that truly describes our country with so many differing opinions. Also a handful of people in the comments are saying you are just hating on ndp songs but tbh I find your opinion quite true and reasonable, I think they just don’t your message lmao.

    Tbh I'm already done with ndp song.
    It just degrades every year and secondly, those songs are getting annoying - sounds like propaganda objects.
    Also the meanings of those lyrics are trash, like they never ever make us feel the urge to do something positive with the nation but just keep echoing in our head to do something that we aren't motivated by it.

    If the NDP songs are not adequate, while it's good to criticise it so it can improve, the best most effective way is to go into it, do it, produce your own version or alternative. Criticising is not too difficult, Creating is another. Good effort in creating this video as I did enjoy it.

  • @ReliaYT
    @ReliaYT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Okay. Before I start, I just want to say that I'm not trying to bash your video about you're throwing trash at Singapore and its national song, or hating Singapore because we're lame, or just me trying to be a smart alak, criticising you as a Singaporean hater. I'm posting this comment to share my opinion about your statement and see what would happen in the future.
    I'll start out with what I agree with your statement. When listening to all of the NDP songs, it is amazing at how many songs have the word "dream" in it. And in a way, it's very contradicting to what happens in real life, where for a good portion of every Singaporean's life is spend in school. There are many Singaporeans who're most likely doing something that their child self never expected and is a real pain. The songs make it sounds like you can do whatever you want if your dream hard enough, yet we usually never get what we'd wished for. It usually leaves many Singaporeans hopeless for what they'd wanted to be and often, unmotivated, which makes it seems that Singapore is putting on a masquerade about the real life with the NDP songs.
    Now, I'll talk about what I don't agree with. You stated that the purpose of a NDP song is to, "drum up interest and excitement for the big August 9th National Day Parade, which in turn, is designed to be the one day in the year that Singaporeans can come together to celebrate the meaning of being a Singaporean." While that might be the case, it could also be wrong. A song is usually made to promote the composer's fame, feelings, message or personal life. We'll use "message" as the focus here. I believe that a NDP song's message is to tell the young and old alike that, "You are a Singaporean. You can achieve what you set your dreams or goals are. Go and make it a reality." What it means that a NDP song's message is not to pull people into fantasy over reality, but rather to ask them, "Why are you a Singaporean." Its purpose is to encourage and to remind us, that whatever we wished when we're young, we can achieve it whenever we want to achieve it. The educational system is there to help us to achieve our dreams, regardless of how small the help we got at school was. We have people whom we have bonds created to support us on our dreams. Life is never an easy road, and whether we realize that fact early or later in life is up to us. It is like what Shia LaBeouf said, "Don't let your dreams be dreams."
    Everybody has their different opinion on things and they usually will have either a good or bad reason to backup their opinion. Your statement is one of the most better ones at stating the parallels between the songs and the country we live in. I understand your statement clearly and can see why you'd think that way. But even so, that doesn't mean that we cannot achieve what we want. It's just whether we, as humans, are able to work hard to achieve what we wanted to.
    We make our dreams. We make our decisions. We make our Singapore.

    • @sw36jl
      @sw36jl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Sad Coffee
      I completely agree with Relia. A country like Singapore is small and cannot cope unless we continue innovating. Everyone from young feels proud. We always learn we grew from 3rd world to 1st through school SS lessons and other means. We have accomplished a lot and Singaporeans know that. The NDP song is to tell Singaporeans to keep working hard to be better and better. Why must you tell a population that they are so amazing? Does that mean we are stupid to need encouragement like that? Indonesia has high corruption and poor education in countrysides yet their GDP is 4 times ours. So, being complacent and reassuring our population that we have accomplished a lot is encouraging us to stop as we are "at our best". In life, you will never be at your best. "Live till old age, learn till old age" or "活到老,学到老“ We must continue learning and advancing and never stop.
      If Singapore were like the USA, we could keep telling ourselves we are on top of the world because we are a big country and we can hit high output with minimum potential and remain competitive. However for Singapore to remain compeitive, we must continue to work as we will never be at our best.
      Yes, it is a sad message clothed in a happy song but the hope is that the education system has not failed and that Singaporeans are smart enough to understand this.

    Ndp songs are supposed to be catchy, that's why old songs are still so popular and is in everyone's mind. The recent ones are songs that are more "trendy", "hard to sing", which sounds pretentious and reeks of affectation when paired with lyrics about Singapore. The singers also tend to showcase their singing skills and that is not something everyone can sing along.
    A successful ndp song therefore just needs this few criteria:
    - A catchy rhythmic tune, even if it may sound cringy or silly
    - Easy to remember lyrics, by using simple and repetitive sentences.
    - Song should be written for the masses, and not for the singer to showcase his/her singing capabilities. Hence, any artistic singing style should be removed.

    The new generation cannot relate because all they do is enjoy the peace and prosperity made possible by our elders, who had to work hard to make Singapore what it is today. That's why these songs and words cannot strike a chord with their hearts. There are no 'feelings'. Don't get me started about 'new citizens'. They probably don't even know what these songs mean and may even find them a joke.

    Cool video, interesting arguements, and hilarious derps lol.
    I can most definitely see the constraints though, which is honestly, to me, pretty damn sad, or pathetic, depending on which side you stand. The same can be observed in many movies and shows made by locals though, which often reflect some "sepia-toned footage of kampungs or early-day HDBs", "the good old times", and "home". Like, do they really not have enough material to make something else?
    Or perhaps I'm just an oddity who got turned off by most local media who also loves monsters lol.

    Also, on a whole different note, I'm just going to respond to the NDP songs with... a Dragonforce song. You have been warned.
