I went to Herkimer twice. Both times I came back with at least 1000 different Herkimer diamonds. My son, who didn't want to at first, he found a Herkimer as big as his hand in the first five minutes of hunting for gems. This particular mine has been mined by professional miners, so that's why this kid had such hard time finding. The mine you need to go to is across the street from a camp ground, that's on the Mohawk River. You can find Herkimer there too.
For the best spots, usually go to Y 12, but since the update now making diamonds rarer go to -57 for the best chances of finding diamonds and remember most dianonds spawn in lava
