    I have a bougainvillea with long branches we call Scarlatina. I use a hook with expandable pole. This tool used to be able to cut limbs from tall trees using a rope that you pull to cut it.

    Thank you for your lovely video! I live in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and last summer bought 2 potted bougainvilleas that I as the thriller in containers (just petunias at base). I live in a very sunny house and decided to bring them in for the winter as an experiment. They have done better than I expected and basically flowered all winter - In about mid may I will be able to put them outside again after risk of a freeze. I have just given them a good trim (inspired my you) so maybe they will explode again this summer!

    • @nehainthebay
      @nehainthebay  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks! I have trained older plants though it gets harder if the branches get stiff. In that case, it requires being more gentle and patient and taking it step by step (some pruning, then tying). Hope that helps.

    • @nehainthebay
      @nehainthebay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes, light pruning might help. Also, the plant loves sunlight, so if it doesn’t get enough of that it may not flower.
      Good luck with the plant. 👍🏽

    How do you protect the plants from freezing during the winter months?

    • @nehainthebay
      @nehainthebay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fortunately it doesn’t freeze where I live, so I don’t have to do anything special. I believe if your bougainvilleas are forced to see freezing temperatures, covering the plant as much as possible and protecting the roots with mulch might help. If they are in containers, bringing them inside could help as well.

    • @nehainthebay

    May i ask. Which insect repellant do u need to use if the plant is attack by the small insects? Mine is so neglected that its leaves curl up and not blooming for years..

    • @nehainthebay
      @nehainthebay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bougainvilleas are pretty hardy if they get enough sunlight, so maybe that’s the problem. In case there are insects, neem oil might help as a repellent.
      Hope that helps your plant bloom.

    I have a bougainvillea that is a tree. It is pretty but is overgrown significantly. By the way, I just bought the house so I don't know how long it took to get in this condition. There are many different branches/trunks at the bottom. Is it okay to cut either the smaller ones or bigger ones away? Which would you cut and why?

    • @nehainthebay
      @nehainthebay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I love all kinds of bougainvilleas! We now have 3 climbers that I planted and 2 that were already planted.
      In my experience, bougainvilleas can withstand heavy pruning. However, I prefer cutting smaller and dead branches regularly.
      If you have to cut the big stems, it may be better to leave several inches above the ground so they regrow.
      I prefer starting with smaller branches and going inwards as that gives a better idea of how much to cut. If I get too zealous about cutting the big ones, the shape gets altered and then I have to retrain the plant to desired shape.
      Hope this helps!
