I just don't understand the reason for any of them. It'd be nice to have at least 5 seconds explaining the goal of the exercise. What they're working.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what you're trying to accomplish. I could skip the odd breath too, but it wouldn't assist the intent of the exercise. My recommendation is: rather than stocking up on air, take in the amount required for the phrase and then focus on the real objective of the exercise. Air is just one aspect of that and often not the most important one.

      As always, skip an exercise if you feel strain or irritation when you sing it. In order to sing in a "heady", hooty coordination, this exercise should require little effort or volume. Are you able to sing in falsetto?

      @@SpencerWelchVocalStudio Not very well at all. I am thinking of taking you up on your offer. this is my channel. If you think you can help me hit the notes that just seem out of my range. I will probably take you up on your lessons.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like you're used to pulling up your chest voice to sing the higher notes in songs. At first, developing your head voice (and eventually mix voice) would mean practicing a softer, weaker but more comfortable head voice coordination in the upper range.
      So you would do this in exercises, but it wouldn't be usable in songs for a while until you strengthened and deepened it further down the road.. This would take practice and patience, but it can be done.
      Feel free to book a lesson with me if you want to dig deeper into this:
      www.spencerwelch.com/lessons/book-now/
      My online vocal academy Singing Ignition also deals with this.

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it could be that your head voice is weak because you rely on your chest voice so much when you perform. That's a pretty common thing for singers to do, which is why they have to make changes slowly behind the scenes in their practice room...until one day the hard work starts to show up in their songs.

    Hi Spencer,
    Happy new year! Another great video.
    Quick question, I have noticed that when I do head voice exercises first and then work down to mid and then chest, it feels better.
    Is there a general order you should approach working your voice when it comes to the registers?
    Thanks,
    Ricky

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Happy New Year, Ricky! To answer your question, it all depends...which is the usual answer for most vocal things. It all depends on the singer's tendencies and habits.
      If you're the kind of singer that tends to pull up your chest voice too high into ranges where you should be mixing, then it may work best to build your voice from the top down, first with head voice and then slowly thicken it up as you descend.
      However, for someone who sings with light chest and is overly-dependent on their head voice, then building from the bottom up usually works best. Would you say you tend to be a chest-dominant singer?

  • @DuckChuckGoose
    @DuckChuckGoose ปีที่แล้ว

    Spencer - I can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos; they have truly helped me improve. 2 quick questions, if you have the time:
    1) Compared to your 7 min head voice workout, which sometimes goes up to C5 or maybe C#5, this doesn't go as high - is there a reason for that?
    2) Can you explain the desired effect of using a sound like "wee" vs. the hard G in "gee" or "goh"? Certainly I feel more fold contact on the harder syllable, and have to focus on avoiding constriction -- is that the point?

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, that makes me happy. 1) I'm just working the head voice slightly differently here 2) The G helps assist some singers with their head voice to make it less falsetto-like

    I appreciate you vids Spencer and I’ve made progress using them but I’m trying to get a stronger connected sound in my mix/head voice so that I can have a more powerful beltier high end with lest strain. I was diagnosed with a sulcus vocalis and I’m wondering if it’s keeping me from developing that upper register. Is the power just something that comes with time? Or is it more related to technique?

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm happy you're enjoying my videos. Unfortunately, I can't comment on your voice and give advice without hearing you and working with you in a lesson. Your vocal diagnosis could be playing a part in your development, but I would have to work with you to see what your voice is capable of. What does your ENT suggest as far as treatment for the sulcus vocalis?

      @@SpencerWelchVocalStudio I’m doing voice therapy to work on technique and voice efficiency but I’m not sure it’s helping. I’m a working musician right now and it’s tough to think I might have to hang it up because of my injury. @@SpencerWelchVocalStudio i do a lot of country and blusey stuff. My main question aside from my personal vocal injury is can you get a beltier mixed sound out of doing these types of exercises? i'm a bass/baritone and my passagio is right around that D4-E4 yet a lot of songs that i have to play require a beltier sound in and above this range which makes things tough even if i lower the key

    • @SpencerWelchVocalStudio
      @SpencerWelchVocalStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well these kinds of exercises tend to develop a comfort with head voice, which is a stepping stone toward developing mixed voice (since it involves a mix of chest and head voice.) So you probably won't get a belty mix quality from practicing with these, but then it all depends on your vocal needs and habits. I would have to hear you and work with you to give advice since everyone is different. Have you tried this video? th-cam.com/video/ZpeVTtLusgo/w-d-xo.html
