  • In this Spindle Spotlight I am featuring two captive ring spindles. This first is from a U.S. maker. John, of Straddle Creek Spins, he and I had a chance to talk during a fiber festival a few years ago. He is a truly talented woodworker; he and his family are lovely people. My first captive ring spindle was one of his, and I have since added a few more to the collection. Straddle Creek has a variety of suspended and support styles of spindles in a wide array of different woods.
The second spindle is a Pushka hand carved style from Paucartambo. These, along with other one of a kind spindles are available on Abby Franquemont's website.

    Spindle Style Pros:
captive ring makes a fun "chac-chac" sound when spinning
depending on spindle size it can spin and ply with one spindle
most function either suspended or supported
    slower spin time
unique/novel design that showcases woodworker's talent
spins almost all fibers (cotton might be more of a challenge due to slow spin time)
    Spindle Style Cons:
    captive ring can effect balance
    inconsistent spin time
can be challenging to get started
weight/styles vary greatly depending on maker

My first "live" episode since subscribing! These videos are so informative and extremely interesting. The downside is that I now want even more spindles, but I think it's justifiable. I look forward to the next episode!

No offense intended, but one of the best parts of this video was your lovely fluff machine trying to get your attention. 😁 Her fluff would be lovely to blend and spin. I enjoyed seeing the chac-chac spindles going. As always, you are so fluid when you spin and it's very enjoyable to watch.

😂 None taken- and thank you! I love that attention seeking little ball of fluff! She's triple coated, so her fur is lovely when blended and spun!🥰

I have been looking for information on support spinning with a Turkish drop spindle. Unfortunately I can’t afford more tools and I love my Turkish spindle that I bought from IST Crafts in England and I am in Canada. So, if you could address this if there is a way to use spindles two different ways I would appreciate it. You might have talked about this before, if so, redirect me please. Wonderful information. Thanks.. It’s really hard to purchase tools and fibre in the USA because of the exchange and shipping plus duty. Thanks so much.😊

Turkish spindles are one of my FAVORITE types of spindles because most can be used supported and suspended. I talk about that in my spotlight #2 and #4. If you also use Instagram, I can put together a quick reel with my Turkish from IST Crafts.
