I remember one time the drum line came inside our dorm. It was election day, and they were telling everyone to vote. They came to the court yard JAMMING at like 8AM. I'll never forget that morning. I miss watching the BGMM machine on Saturday afternoons.
i been a watchin a few videos from them. i just like they swag! its not cocky but its still like "we got this, dnt worry" I went to FAMU but i give props when props is due. peace to yall.
i kno that they were created and its called SHOWSTYLE ALSO dci is very technical and thats what i love about it is the difficulty but after while it xan get boring and dci gets to practice hours and hours a day during the whole summer we colleges only get 2 weeks in the summer , and practices depending on who has a class, job , military duties etc so i appreaciate both but its people like you that need to appreciate both
It's good to have an opinion no doubt.I'm BGMM (A&T) alumni and was marching in the 80's when Cold Steel was founded. The revision you speak of has been going on for many years. You probably wouldn't notice it without inside knowledge of how they've done things. But certain aspects of their performance, particularly cadences are part of their identity and I don't see changing too much.I've seen lines scrap all of their traditional stuff for the sake of technicality and lose touch with their alumni.
My percussion knowledge is limited but your comment on the use of their arms as their technique is probably correct.Over the years they've had plenty of musicians from corps style bands and some from dci and this way of playing has remained. But if you look, you'll notice that its more prevalant on certain pieces than others. This section has always been attentive to even the smallest of details.I'm sure there is a method or reason for everything they do.
I understand you look at skill, technique etc.But apparently you overlook purpose. The material played in this video are traditional cadences they've played for many years and they were designed to move the band from point a to point b.Weren't they marching in a good portion of this? This is why the material is moreso groove heavy than complex. You can find plenty of videos of them playing more technical stuff for features. But street cadences have groove and boom cause thats how the BGMM wants it.
confused at what this comment even means...the movie was just inspired by the school, the school actually had nothing to do with production or making of the movie
HBCU don't mean all black...even though they are 99.9% black....what it means is that it was created for black Americans...I am 64 years old, and I am from Greensboro living in Miami...and I have watching A&T's marching band since I waqs a little boy. I go to the homecoming every year...it is a family tradition, my kids that are grown now and my grandkids come from New York to attend homecoming...it's the biggest of all black colleges....
its also called an hbcu historically black college or university. its not all black. thats a misconception. the same way any other school isn`t all white. i went to famu and we had ppl from all over the world that went there so its never just all black people...it was some white/ hispanic/latino students in the band too.
using proper technique is all on who's POV you're looking from a choral style marching band will have totally different styles than a traditional style band and at the end of the day you're probably going to love one and respect but not like the other so just let it go
I find that most current HBCU Drumsections/Drumlines cadences don't groove at all. I understand the advancement of the sections is important but don't lose the FUNK in the cadence, All of the cadences sound the same, and complexity is not always appropriate,
well all that dut dut dut shit is for the birds i like dci and all that but they are boring as hell all they do are a bunch or damn rolls half the time anyway
There's barely any talent in show style drumlines. I have yet to find one that doesn't sound like popcorn... or one that plays anything challenging for that matter. Open you ears for a second, "Dut dut dut" is what the guys in the video playing, NOT what dci plays. Not to mention the bass drums that are deliberatly tuned to sound like trash cans and aren't play with dynamics at all. It's always about, "How hard can I beat the shit out of this? That'll impress the audience."
They 01 sound so nice . . .
Did the Macy's thing in High School back in '91....Have fun!
