    Michael, you are a goof ball, I mean this in a nice way, you do add to the levity of the journey.

      No worries at all, was lovely to meet you both... didn't get to do much more than wave at Spud, but looked an awfully happy dog! Enjoy your trip and wave if you pass us by! M

    Having been a lurker, I decided to watch from the beginning - vlog 001 to see how it all started and how it progressed.
    I am almost in the same place of your travels with this episode as your most recent episode...
    Some day I may see it all for myself.

      Quite an effort, catching up to us! Hope it was worth it! And do see it for yourself, absolutely worth the effort! M

      How frequently do Narrowboat Tubers cross paths in the wild?

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends, for a while it seemed like Jono and us were following each other, but at other times nothing. Now we're in London it happens a fair bit! M

    Hey Guys, I have just binge watched all your videos as I happened across them when researching the Basingstoke canal. It was lovely to see you drive through our home town of Aldershot and visit our second home of Hinckley. It’s been a total pleasure following your journey. I would very much enjoy a vlog every two days max of 15 mins but less is more sometimes. I haven’t seen a map of your journey for a little while it would so great to have a map of the network and a different colour for all the bits you have achieved so far at the end of each vlog. I do hope you make it back to the Basingstoke one day it would be great to try and say hi. All the best! Keep on persevering!

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, thanks for watching! Jo has done some maps in our various "review" videos, and some showing specific points of progress, but we could perhaps do a overview map of the whole system progress... maybe not on every video, but I'll mention it to her. We'll have our one year boat-iversary coming up soon, so perhaps in that. Maps can be surprisingly hard, as we're not really able to use one that isn't licensed for TH-cam, and a great many simply aren't.
      Thanks so much for watching! And yes we absolutely plan on making it back to the Basingstoke some day... can't finish a journey without ending up where you started! M

  • @rebbward
    @rebbward 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You're making quicker progress than I expected and of course I don't know how delayed the vlogs are but two things to consider, if you are not already past them.
    First, when you get to Willington pop into Mercia marina. Either take the boat in (there is plenty of manoeuvring room) or moor and take George over the foot bridge. Mercia is a very "Marmite" experience but you should see it once.
    Secondly, despite the extra miles, do include Nottingham, it's a very interesting city and there are fine moorings outside Sainsbury or on the river, by the Civic Hall.
    Frank.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Frank! We are moving along at a good clip. We did visit Mercia, and we're hoping to visit Nottingham before turning south... as of today the upper Trent is closed, though, so we'll see what's happening with it once we're up and down the Erewash. Cheers! M

    more more more more of the vlogs, keep them coming, we only get away on a hire boat once a year so great to experience the cruising through the year following yourselves, Jono, and Robbie.
    like the single days.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you're enjoying them! More on the way! M

  • @sdbpost
    @sdbpost 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mixing in shorter one day cruises would be great, especially if you did some normal speed sections when cruising through the more scenic sections. The sped up bits are great for following along in general, but the slow parts are so much more relaxing!

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, the Vlog doesn’t dictate the cruise the cruise dictates the Vlog. Also we don’t speed up footage we film as timelapse as we don’t have the battery capability or storage so film in real-time on the GoPros. We limit the about of time-lapse we use in each vlog but include but we feel it helps to tell the story!

    • @sdbpost

    For me, just as long as you produce videos, the cruise length matters little. This includes non cruising videos, when you are moored, and enjoying things. I hope you will stay clear of the A&E videos, just on general principals. I hate needing write get well cards. And the thought of worry, on that face, and in those eyes, hurts from an ocean away. but that smile brings sunshine, around the clock twice a day, and around the calendar once per year. Why the sunniest people live in lands with the most terrible weather is just one of God's mysteries. May god keep you and bless you.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We’re always trying to avoid the A&E, don’t you worry! M

  • @johnbuckley5761
    @johnbuckley5761 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great vlog. That stretch by the A38 drives me mad too, so much so I have moved my boat further down the T & M to king's Bromley marina to get away from it. Unfortunately you have more of the drone north from Burton to Willington. Enjoy Nottingham, the city I live and work in, the best moorings are on the River Trent just upstream from Trent Bridge near the County Council building, and you can also moor near castle marina but it is noisy and has lots of passing foot traffic. Keep vlogging.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great to know, thank you. We're heading up the Erewash next, last we saw the flood locks up to Nottingham are still closed, but I do hope we get to swing over before heading south again! M

    • @johnbuckley5761
      @johnbuckley5761 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the flood locks are closed you might find you get stopped at Shardlow and can't get to the Erewash. Weather is looking good for the next few days and the Trent falls quickly. Best wishes for the trip.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apparently the path has been opened, so we should be good to go! M

  • @MrBblhed
    @MrBblhed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for explaining the marina, that place looked really cool but it wasn't clear to me what the bridge I could see raising in the video was. It looked like some sort of gate that prevented entry rather than a foot bridge. Also it must have been nice to load coal and get water indoors while it was raining.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a good little shelter, that tunnel... the bridge is sort of a barrier, but also the only footbridge for the marina tenants, so it serves both purposes, and is certainly a conversation piece. I think it's actually my favorite marina so far, just for that weird entrance! M

    So this actually turned out to be a "shorter, one day cruise vlog" that is actually longer than your multiple day vlogs tend to be on average. Which means that we get more of you, and that can only be a good thing. Keep 'em coming!
    Oh, and twenty minutes just of that last clip on loop would be amazing!

    Shobnall Marina is right next to Marstons brewery, where beer is still made to this day. But back in the day, there were tons more in that area, there is still parts of breweries around there but not as many. Branston isn't that far from Shobnall, around a 20-minute walk and 35-minute walk into the center of Burton where there are two more Birds Bakery shops, the actual Bakery is in nearby Derby. You're right about the pickle, but something else is made still in Branston, some love it some hate it, yep it's Marmite, they even have a Marmite Taxi (Cab).

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Didn’t know that about marmite! Thanks! Jo

    • @MinimalList

  • @mikeskelly2356

    For those pesky locks with double gates and a long hike to the footbridge at the far end, pass a length of line through the Lock Beam handle and carry both ends across the closed gates. You can then pull the far gate open from the opposite landing, release one end of the line and retrieve it, then open the near gate. (Only works on gates you can safely cross). It will save a lot of walking on flights of multiple locks...

    Bloopers always make me laugh.. I'm not sure Michael nearly slipped at that lock gate, looked like a shady trip from George in revenge for no ball throwing lol. Always look forward to your vlogs so short or long is ok.... The weather is salamandery hahaha

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was an unintentional -- but still quite shady -- trip ... the ol' "I'll just put my ball where he can kick it" trick. Still, no harm, and Jo nearly peed herself laughing when she saw it and heard that clunk, and her giggle always brightens my day, so I'll give the crafty little mutt a mulligan! M

      We're exhausted by just doing roughly weekly vlogging, I'm not sure how the daily vloggers even do it (I think Casey Neistat for instance secretly had a staff of 20 or so), but we'll try to keep up and even increase the pace! M

    Watching the vlog playlist whilst work from home covid good background noise for me...We live near a freeway in MI. We call it sic freeway the river because it sounds like a fast moving river. In the winter it is very loud because no leaves block the sound.

    Vlogs are fine, the issue I have is with the channel name "minimal list"
    So I have two suggestions to correct this small issue.
    Change the name to either
    "minimal George" or my preferred choice
    "George's List"
    I don't think Craig will object..... and George is the class act of you three, so deserves top billing.
    It's simple logic really, I'm surprised this oversight hasn't already been corrected...😎

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thing is George doesn't like list... makes him all sea sick, and he starts wobbling about... plus the balls roll everywhere of their own accord. But we do try and feature him prominently, since we know he's really our main draw! M

    Maybe this has been answered if not I’m curious: Do you ever worry about someone stealing coal or other things from the roof of the boat that are not permanently attached? It gives me anxiety just watching.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well we don't have much of value up there, really just the coal and the solar panels... the panels you'd have to damage to remove without special tools, and hightailing it down a muddy towpath with 25KG of coal over your shoulder doesn't seem to be the smartest or most profitable form of crime. A little anxiety the couple of times we've been away overnight, but little worry the rest of the time... for the most part I've gone through life assuming that people are generally decent, and so far it's been borne out.
      Besides, in the end, it's just stuff... if someone needs the coal enough to risk jail for it, I'd rather give the poor soul a bag. M

    I want longer daily vlogs... Generally just more! More shorter is better than less longer. Since Jono and cruising the cut seem to have given up regular canal vlogging you need to make up their slack.

      We're no where near daily vlogging -- honestly not sure how those people do it, except the ones that are purely talking heads -- but we're trying to keep up a good pace. Finding the right balance of something that can be edited relatively quickly but still be interesting. Jo's already spending most of any day we're not cruising editing, so not sure how much we'll be able to increase output, but hopefully with slightly shorter videos we can keep up our intended pace without too many breaks.
      I think the winter naturally interrupts vlogging -- it's bloody dark on these boats and the cameras aren't that good in low light -- so I'm hoping everyone picks up again with the warmth and sun! M

      I feel a slight kinship to Jo. My grandfather grew up in Barwell, England. I don't know if that's a bad thing or not. Growing up my pop would make yorkshire pudding, sheppards pie and yes egg custard. He was made to go to the church of England as a kid. I have 2 years to retirement. I going to try to make to England if time and age allows. Thanks again for the entertainment and witty as well as informative banter.

      Alleged water sports. Alleged. Ughhh.
      I totally recommend an extended visit to the UK, if you can make it; it's grown on me immensely, and I find that the people are far friendlier than Fawlty Towers might indicate! It's a fascinating country, with what seems like about eleven different languages packed into one, and more colloquialisms than a people could ever rightly deserve. Most visitors never really get out of London, though... amazing city, but not by a long shot the story of England, never mind Britain. Just remember, to them it's not the wrong side of the road, no matter how sure you are you're about to die. M

      More like Leia, Jo!
      It's interesting to see how far so-called "amateur" TH-camrs have progressed. The level of skill involved in the filming and editing only really becomes apparent when there is a slight issue (wind noise, etc). For the most part these short films just get accepted with the same expectation as any footage you might see on commercial TV.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Jo's skill with editing is really progressing, and it's amazing how much help the equipment gives you these days. I mean I used to work with cameras costing > $300,000 with resolution about two thirds of what the latest iPhone can do... it's been a ridiculous improvement, which just democratized the ability to pick up and start learning the tools! M

    • @NostalgiaSmith
      @NostalgiaSmith 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's true that technology has democratized many areas of the arts and entertainment. I myself use music recording and production equipment (much of it software based) that far exceeds that available in top flight studios only a few decades ago; and at a fraction of the cost.
      Nevertheless, it will always be the creativity, imagination and facility with the equipment of the creators that makes the difference. And this is what I find interesting; it's not surprising that someone like David from CTC would have skills in presenting, filming and editing, but these skills are now demonstrated by people who not very long ago would have been expected to undergo years of training to reach even a modest level of proficiency.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I feel the tech has done; you can now do an edit on a £100 app that cost over £3500 when I was going through film school... and you had to go to school back then to learn how to use it, because there was no TH-cam to watch 500 tutorials on. All the hardware becoming accessible right at the same moment that everyone can effectively teach themselves means that the base knowledge required to do so spreads further, faster. And you can iterate quicker, which means you gain experience quicker. By the time I finished 4 years of university I had two 11 minutes short films and a crippling debt load ... spend 4 years making TH-cam videos and (by the end of it) you'll have thousands of hours more experience than I got in the same duration, at a fraction the cost.
      So yeah it's definitely creativity and talent and skill, but the tech allows everyone to develop all three to a degree impossible just a decade ago. M

    You could have gone another round with that last bit I wouldn't have objected in the slightest. Sorry M but you have to admit if it had been Jo you would have done exactly the same.
    Yep like the new thoughts on daily but only if you can comfortably keep up with it? As long as you don't feel pressured to religiously knock them out daily you'll take the fun out of it for yourselves. George will probably barely notice even though he obviously has the Lions share of the workload.
    If you're desperate Egg Custards are easy to make apparently. Looked like some sort of pastry based torture to me!

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well we mean more "vlog per cruising day" than "daily vlog" ... our non-cruising days are pretty dull, as they're often just Jo cutting the last cruising vlog as fast as possible, but we're hoping the single cruise day per video format will smooth out and hopefully speed up the schedule a bit, as the multiple cruise days per video pattern was getting to be a bit hard to keep up the frequency of release with. M
