I haven't tried this yet but you make it look so easy that I am going to. My old iMac is getting a little sluggish and an SSD is just what she needs. I've replaced a couple of HDD with SSD on MacBook before but not iMac so this was very helpful.
Thank you so much for this. It's been really really useful. Thank you for your patience, particularly for explaining how to take out those very small fiddly cables and connections. Thanks!!!!
Everyone cuts and edits out the part at 4:15 of connecting the tricky display data cable. If anyone wants to upgrade their 2010 iMac then be very careful of that cable. I damaged mine easily, and found that it is easier to disconnect that cable from the display instead.
Yep, you're 100% right about that! I removed my display a few days ago to clean out the insane dust - before I do this SSD upgrade (My kit arrived today via Amazon) That cable clip is extremely delicate, I gently pressed it in to remove the connection and the one side (made of extremely thin plastic) snapped. The other side was ok. But getting back attached was harder - but possible. As long as you get it back in, connected..and NOT jolt the computer, the display is fine. Just breaking it aggravated me. The SDD install won't be a big deal, it's removing this darn display again..well I dread it.

Best visual disconnect/connect ive seen yet, seeing as how i JUST purchased a '09 27 inch imac i too was intimidated a bit by the amount of connections an compacted frame it has, however i think I can manage it, very good video bud.
Thanks for the tutorial! I bought an 2009 imac. But i can not tell if you replaced the heat sensor? Can you please brighten that up for me :) thanks alot!
I have this same iMac. I think its already been 10+ years old and my screen is very weird. Got red vertical stripes in the screen. How can i fix this ?
Yes, I do know very well and matter of fact I do have all the tools. But this video is for those peoples who don't have the proper tools. Thanks for sharing the info. thanks for watching.
it's so much easier to not remove the screen. i simply swing the top of the screen open as far as the cables will go, and tape the corner of it back to the computer body to hold in in place. there is plenty of room to operate on the hd without removing any unnecessary cables.
Hi. After you take the glass out and remove the monitor and the cables can you still turn it on to see if the fans are even working? I cannot hear or feel mine at all. I put a little piece of toilet paper at the top to see if it would move and nothing at all. Are they that weak?
+G Fabian Alvarez .... Yes you can turn it on. Of Course without the display you would not be able to see anything. But the internal parts will turn on and you will be able to spot if a fan has gone bad. to turn it off simply disconnect the power. Fortunately fans can be found cheap on ebay. It is a little hassle to change them but not impossible to do.
Everything worked fine getting the screen off, unscrewing it, and removing my hard drive. But I cannot figure out how to get the tiny screws back into the holes without them falling into the gutter.
No need...Along with the dynamic thermal throttling mechanism, the performance of the SSD will be throttled down to ensure that the SSD's temperature does not exceed the critical level.
I have to admit I am confused by this video. On one hand, it is extraordinarily well done with exact instructions about how to disassemble and reassemble everything. On the other hand, from reading the description, for my 2011 iMac 27", it looks like I need to buy a thermal cable, a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter, and a OWC SSID DIY kit -- none of which seem to be mentioned or shown in the video. I will buy them, using the links in the description so the Easy Steps gets credit for the sale, but I'm really confused why these three things are not discussed or shown in the video. For example, there is a hot cut in the video showing the bracket on the new SSD -- but it's not clear from the video whether that came from the old disk or you need to buy it (I see from the video description that I need to buy it).
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. @@EasySteps_Sidhu I did see the disk bracket mentioned in the video, it just wasn't clear at all where it came from (whether it came from the old disk or was purchased separately because it appears out of nowhere in the vide -- especially since you are reusing the screws, it's impossible to tell about the bracket). Hello ! i am posting this here so maybe others can benefit, your videos are widely helpful, My question is, why is my iMac Late 2011 overheating ? I payed a computer repair store to replace my 1Tb internal(possibly stock) with a 240GB SSD, when i talked to them about a thermal sensor they didn't seem to know what i was talking about, my iMac gets so hot to the point it reboots due to an error, is this due to the fans? are they going crazy because they have no idea what speeds to run ? i read this somewhere. Thans for your time.
You probably can't unless it is an Apple approved hard drive. So what you do is you go to Other World Computing and you buy the external thermal sensor for your iMac, and then you can use a regular hard drive.
Oh yeah, and if you've got thermal sensor issues, and don't want to replace the drive, or buy the Other World Computing sensor, then download the smcFanControl Mac app, and you'll have to manually spool up the fans.

if you are replacing your old HDD with SSD and you don't want your fan to be noisy, just take off your old HDD control board from the top of HDD (6 small screws), plug in the temperature sensor cable and stick the board on top of your new SSD with double sided tape.

What did he do with the thermal cable that he unplugged from the mechanical hard drive?
He doesn’t show what he did with the cable. Did he just leave it unplugged because the SSD does not have a port for that thermal cable.
Thank you

What year is the iMac? some early iMacs like mid 2009 you can easily damage the camera cable!

Hi,
May I ask, where to do connect the HDD censor cable onto your SSD ? Please advice. Thanks.
Its interesting there is no reply to this. I have the same question
Hello ! i am posting this here so maybe others can benefit, your videos are widely helpful, My question is, why is my iMac Late 2011 overheating ? I payed a computer repair store to replace my 1Tb internal(possibly stock) with a 240GB SSD, when i talked to them about a thermal sensor they didn't seem to know what i was talking about, my iMac gets so hot to the point it reboots due to an error, is this due to the fans? are they going crazy because they have no idea what speeds to run ? i read this somewhere.
Thans for your time.
You probably can't unless it is an Apple approved hard drive. So what you do is you go to Other World Computing and you buy the external thermal sensor for your iMac, and then you can use a regular hard drive.
Oh yeah, and if you've got thermal sensor issues, and don't want to replace the drive, or buy the Other World Computing sensor, then download the smcFanControl Mac app, and you'll have to manually spool up the fans.
simple and clear thanks man
