anime: bungou stray dogs. it’s on crunchyroll or gogoanime, and on netflix in some regions i believe

more details below, as promised! i’ll try not to be too spoilery. it turned into a long rant so feel free to ignore. if you wanna read it though, here are my thoughts (i have Opinions about this, here’s a warning)
if you didn’t know, light novel 1 (osamu dazai’s entrance exam) was technically adapted in the anime in S1 EPS 6-7. but… they cut a LOT of stuff out, and as a result, 1. kunikida’s character feels much less fleshed-out and 2. so does the kunikidazai partnership. i’d personally even go so far as to say 3. it also makes dazai’s own growth as a character more shallow.
i say this as the LN is set when kunikida and dazai are both 20 (2 years before the current timeline). imo, the differences between 20!dazai and 22!dazai are quite big. if you thought dazai’s speech at the end of episode 7 - after both rokuzo and sasaki d!3 - “this was the only possible outcome”, felt a bit… out of line with the rest of his actions, then this is one way of explaining it. 22!dazai, at least in my personal view, would not have let so many people d!3. 20 y/o dazai still is feeling out the boundaries between good and evil, fresh out the underworld. but 22 y/o dazai has a better grip on them.
the anime plays up kunikida’s comedic aspects. and he IS funny, albeit unintentionally, as he is in the manga. and they did do a good job in visually drawing the parallels between kunikida and the azure king that are in the LN! but. kunikida’s ideals in the light novel are much more… unaligned w reality. at 22, his ideals are more grounded. yeah, 20!kuni still comes across as exasperated, tired, and logical as he is now. but at 20, he tries to (unnecessarily) take on the burden of many in his quest to create the ideal world, like rokuzo, for example - he tries to fill-in as a father figure, though he denies it. the contrast with him at 22 is that he knows he can’t save everyone. and it’s something he reiterates Many Times to both atsushi (about kyouka) and dazai (about atsushi). this aspect of change - in both dazai, whose first introduction to the world of light is kunikida, a man of ideals and the best choice to show him the ropes bc of it - and kunikida himself, whose ideals are at first so unattainable (e.g the gag of his ideal woman not existing), but has someone like dazai to ground him, is SO important.
bc the anime kinda just brushes over how kunikida and dazai are actually a very well-balanced pair as a result of this? their cooperation is written off as “wow they’re so cool!” but… there is just so much more to their partnership than just that. but anyway, i digress
it’s a v entertaining read! there are lots of funny scenes that were left out of the anime, such as dazai driving and karen!zai. and even more kunikida being scared of ghosts. but it also gives both of them much more depth. it puts events in the manga/anime, 2 years on, into perspective, particularly the opening chapters. it is key that these events are seen as dazai’s entrance exam, as they’re much more consistent w a younger version of both kunikida and dazai.
and yeah !!! at the end of the day, this doesn’t really matter. maybe i’m being a bit nit-picky about this. and you don’t have to agree !!! i get why the studio chose to adapt it (to help atsushi + the viewers understand kunikidazai’s partnership). but in my honest opinion, this light novel - much more so than the anime arc - is crucial to understanding both kunikida and dazai, both as individuals and as a duo. so. i highly recommend you read it !!!

kunikida canonically hates authority which makes sm sense bc his reason for planning out everything is because he wants to have a sense of control over the future (he says so in the light novel) and obviously authority means smn has control over him. i think that he dropped out of college bc of his distaste for authority and to have more power over his own life.
Kunikida is genuinely one of my favorite Bungou Stray Dogs characters…not only is he hilarious, but he also seems like a really sweet guy at heart. If there was a Kunikida figure, I would totally buy it.

His relationship with kunikida, Is emotionally safe, but he let's him beat his ass.

I feel like dazai is having so much fun in the agency with his new friends, somebody to annoy, and he is also a mentor to atsushi just like how he was the mentor to akutagawa in the port mafia. I think it was the best choice he could make. Idk if he really is trying to be better or just trying to fit in. It's still so wholesome and he literally keeps everyone entertained. I don't want him to join the port mafia again. My man was so lonely there. Yeah he had chuuya but knowing the situation he was in, he was depressed while still being 15. He needed words of comfort and encouragement not scoldings all the time. He's happier :) ( I hope we have more sweeter scenes of dazai & chuuya) their friendship is really cute!

You know sometimes I really question why i have a MASSIVE crush on Dazai
(abt the description) as a massive fan of the entrance exam novel, I never even thought about it that way but that's literally so true!! idrk what else to say other than that, just that i 100% agree with the description and that i'm so happy to see someone acknowledge it cuz it really doesn't get talked abt enough! the entrance exam novel is my fave it's honestly so underrated imo
@ everything in the desc MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY??? i'd give anything for ln1 to have been properly animated bc the kunikidazai dynamic makes so much more sense in that context,, one can only imagine getting the [redacted] shoots [redacted] scene in the anime 👀
(cue the sheer awe of reading the novel for the first time and going, ah so THAT'S why those eps felt off)
YEAHH i remember watching it for the first time and was like, “ah, guess they’re finally introducing kunikida properly” bc they did ranpo the episode before. but watching it i felt dazai (particularly) in those eps was a bit off, a bit crueler than what he had already been set up to be in the episodes leading up to it. and then i found out it was an adaptation of a LN, and then read it, and was like “…oh.”
not to mention as a result kunikida just kind of gets played off as “overly idealistic glasses man who gets fed up with dazai all the time and kinda has a stick up his ass” and like. yeah he DOES get fed up a lot with dazai but there’s so much more to their dynamic 🥲. his outburst at the end of ep 7 to dazai also felt off because also in the anime before he’d been set up… not to be the meaner one? but certainly not as kind as dazai (bc of his reluctance to save atsushi) because of the perspective we’d been given. and yet… it felt weird that he would have this outburst *now* when he was… not necessarily apathetic to events surrounding atsushi, because he WAS concerned in his own way, but also he didn’t deal with him as “nicely” as dazai and was critical of his decision to bring atsushi into the ADA from the perspective the viewers are given (though not out of spite or cold-hearted ness, mind you, but because of concern for both dazai and atsushi, i’d argue). and having been partners with dazai for 2 years prior to meeting atsushi, you’d think that they’d have had this kind of conversation before?
then boom, turns out that this actually took place 2 years before which is why both of their characters felt inconsistent in those episodes. the more you know !!! context matters 🥲
that scene was so cool but also so crucial in the LN!! i would honestly do anything to see it properly animated. kunikida also becomes much more humanised because for all his logic he still… flounders a lot (ex. is scared of ghosts!! like for all his ideals he is scared of ghosts of all things??)

@@tp3861 NSKSHSH thank you for the high praise !!! one of the reasons bsd appealed to me so much is because of its themes and the way it raises questions about morality (e.g intention vs consequence), humanity, and trauma through the various characters. i’ve spent many sleepless nights just. thinking about it because the way asagiri has constructed these characters is just. so good and so complex and i think it’d be a disservice to not try and grasp at all facets of them (even though i’m certain there’s stuff i’m missing, and besides, especially w how complex they are, no one interpretation is ever gonna be 100% right! but hey, the variety in interpretation is what makes engaging in fandom so fun LOL)
honestly same, tbh it’s been a while since i read any of the LNs but LN1 along with 15 (LN7) are the two i’ve read most and therefore the ones i can talk about with most… certainty 😭 but damn that sucks, i’m pretty lucky that i was able to buy them as ebooks but i know that option isn’t available for everyone!! the only one i haven’t read in full yet is storm bringer and i really need to get round to doing that rip

i wholeheartedly encourage you to read it!!! it’s not very long (i think it’s actually one of the shorter light novels, if i’m remembering correctly), and it’s my favourite out of all of them! yeah, asagiri’s style of writing isn’t always the easiest to follow but i absolutely love it in my thoroughly biased view (i also have the sneaking suspicion it might also be because of the hijinks of translation, as from what i’ve read from fan translators etc he can also get quite complex in the original japanese). but!!! it’s so worth the read. i hope you enjoy it hehe

@@ticktocktofu that’s so cool to know!!! it comes across slightly in the english translation but not to the same extent, i wouldn’t call it shakespeare ANDLGS but def old fashioned for sure!! honestly the little nuances and voicing that gets lost in translation is one of the reasons i’m trying to learn japanese. i love asagiri’s writing style so much!
@@chuuyasgloves YEEESSSSSS DO ITTTT (learning japanese) i love the language so much!!!!! i may be a bit biased since i'm a japanese language teacher but HONESTLY i feel like the language works in such a beautiful way and asagiri especially works sentences in very artistic way sometimes, and things for sure get lost in translation but having a concrete goal to work towards (like reading bsd LNs) while studying a language is super great!! i even feel like the dazai/kunikida dynamic is funnier in japanese, the bluntness of the way dazai speaks just isn't the same in the dub 😂i wish u the best of luck with your studies!!
